For the first time, the cis/trans isomer content of menaquinone-7 in food products has been identified and marked. A novel method of marking isomers of vitamin K2MK-7 in dietary supplements was developed and validated. Five different isomers of cis/trans vitamin K2MK-7 were identified. Two novel strains, J116-2(T) and J116-1, were isolated from forest soil and were taxonomically characterized by a polyphasic approach. Both strains were yellow-coloured, Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile and rod-shaped bacteria. The strains were non-sporulating, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. One of the major issues associated with industrial production of menaquinone-7 (MK-7) is the low fermentation yield. In this study, we investigated the effect of iron oxide nanoparticles coated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (IONs@APTES) on the production of MK-7 using B. subtilis (ATCC 6633). Decoration of B. subtilis cells with IONs@APTES significantly enhanced both MK-7 production and yield.
