INTRODUCTION: There are different strategies to analyse mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) with different definitions for case, event, time at risk, and statistical tests. A common method for the different registries would enable proper comparison to better understand the actual differences in mortality of our patients. METHODS: We review and describe the analysis strategies of regional, national and international registries. We include actuarial survival, Kaplan-Meier (KM) and competitive risk (CR) analyses...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is frequently used to replace glomerular filtration and to control acid-base, electrolyte and fluid disturbances in critically ill children with acute renal failure. However, cardiorespiratory changes can happen during this procedure. The objective of this review is to describe the PD cardio-respiratory repercutions in the pediatric patient and the evidence level of the studies that approach these repercutions. METHODS: Bibliographic revision about PD cardio-respiratory repercutions in the pediatric patient...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: There is currently no registry that gives a complete and overall view of the peritoneal dialysis (PD) situation in Spain. However, a report on PD in Spain was developed for various conferences and meetings over several years from data provided by each registry in the autonomous communities and regions. The main objective of this study is to analyse this data in aggregate and comparatively to obtain a representative sample of the Spanish population on PD in recent years, in order that analysis and results in terms of demographic data, penetration of the technique, geographical differences, incidence and prevalence, technical aspects, intermediate indicators, comorbidity, and outcomes such as patient and technique survival may be extrapolated to the whole country...

INTRODUCTION: Peritonitis is one of the most common and severe complications associated with peritoneal dialysis (PD), constituting the primary cause of catheter loss and exit from the dialysis technique. The incidence and aetiology of peritonitis episodes vary based on geographical region, and change over time. For this reason, it is vital to maintain an updated understanding of the current risk factors and prognostic factors associated with peritonitis. METHOD: We performed an observational, multi-centre, prospective cohort study with a maximum follow-up period of 7 years (2003-2010), which included 1177 patients and a total of 476 first episodes of peritonitis (total: 1091 cases of peritonitis)...

UNLABELLED: The impact of each episode of peritonitis on long-term survival of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients has yet to be defined. OBJECTIVES: To determine the risk that each episode of peritonitis poses for patient survival and for the PD technique. PATIENTS: 1515 patients included in the Levante registry from 1 January 1993 to 31 December 2005. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a multicentre registry using Cox regression for time-dependent variables...

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) seems to be a good option to initiate renal replacement therapy (RRT), but patients with graft failure choose PD less frequently than incident patients (de novo). OBJECTIVE: To describe patient movements between PD and kidney transplantation (TX) and risk factors for failure of the PD technique. METHOD: Multicentre observational study of patients starting PD between 2003 and 2009 with follow-up up until January 2010...

INTRODUCTION: In 2007 the Scientific Quality-technical and Improvement of Quality in Peritoneal Dialysis was edited. It includes several quality indicators. As far as we know, only some groups of work had evaluated these indicators, with inconclusive results. AIM: To study the evolution and impact of guidelines in Peritoneal Dialysis. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of each incident of patients in Peritoneal Dialysis, in a regional public health care system (2003-2006)...

Most common bacterial species causing peritonitis in the course of peritoneal dialysis (PDP) are coagulase-negative staphylococci, Staphylococcus aureus and streptococci. Haemophilus influenzae is rarely associated with PDP. Hereby we present the first known case of APD-associated peritonitis caused by non-type able H. influenzae (NTHi) presenting the beta-lactamase negative, ampicillin-resistant (BLNAR) phenotype. An 18 year old boy who had been treated with the APD for 12 months due to SLE was admitted in good general condition with diagnosis of PDP...

UNLABELLED: Mean-term experience in the use of Telemedicine in Peritoneal Dialisis (PD) patients is limited as well as its cost-benefit. The main objective of this work is to evaluate Telemedicine utility in mean-long term control of stable PD patients, analyzing if the televisit (TV) could substitute 50% of the programed inhospital consults (HC) the time spent in both visit modalities, the quality of patient-personel contact as well as how image and sound have been perceived. Visit resolution was analyzed taking into account the need of HC after a TV; We also have studied if it would be possible to retrain patients in the dialisis technique with telemedicine, and we have checked the patient perceived quality and calculate the real and social costs...

The Italian Registry of Dialysis and Transplantation (RIDT) was born in 1996 under the aegis of the Italian Society of Nephrology, and it is organized as a federation of regional registries. This study aimed to completely revise the epidemiological data collected during the first 5 yrs (1996-2001) of RIDT activity to evaluate the trends of the main epidemiological features. During this period, regional registries were not always able to assure complete and exhaustive information according to RIDT requirements, owing to different levels of organization and functioning...

REVIEW

The vascular access is the "Achille's heel" of the modern hemodialysis. In order to obtain a good depuration, the blood flow in dialysis must be of 250-300 mL/min, at least. The procedures for the preparation and their complications are cause of the 25% of the hospital admissions in patients with chronic uremia in substitutive therapy. Gold standard is still represented from the distal arteriovenous fistulas of Cimino and Brescia. The alternatives to the native veins as the syntetic graft and the tunneled central venous catheteters or the Dialock system, revealed useful in the patients that have exausted the superficial veins, but are of second choice...

The study consisted in collecting and analysing data from 15 dialysis centres on referral modalities of 1,137 patients with end-stage renal failure starting renal replacement therapy. All the centres in question had implemented PFA Patient Flow Analysis, a management programme for pre-dialysis care from Baxter designed to help improve the collection of data on dialysis patients, from the first visit to a centre through to the start of renal replacement therapy. The aims of the study were threefold: a) describe patient referral modalities and the eligibility of patients for renal replacement treatment; b) determine how many early referrals (ERs) and late referrals (LRs)* have a permanent PD (Peritoneal Dialysis) or HD (Haemodialysis) access at the first treatment; c) for the main outcomes (permanent access at the first treatment and permanent dialysis treatment), compare the performance of centres that offer enhanced education with those that do not...

The purpose of the study is to compare the survival of the patients and the drop-out for change of the method in 2 groups of patients (pts) undergoing either CAPD (41 pts) or standard hemodialysis (HD) (45 pts) as first treatment, since November 1981 to August 1988. Distribution per sex (24 males and 17 females in the CAPD group vs 32 males and 13 females in the HD group), mean age (61.3 years vs 56.7) and number of risk factors (57 vs 61) were not significantly different. The total period of observation was significantly higher (1305...

The authors made peritoneal dialisis with 5% of glucose (7 ml/kg of body weight) in 11 dogs under the conditions of an acute experiments. They examined cortiosl and ADH activity, hematocrite and plasma protein in the samples of blood, obtained on the 20th and 50th minute. ADH was titrated biologicaly by a new method, proposed by Nacev. The results were compared with the changes in the circulatory and renal indices, obtained at the same procedure in the preceding investigations. There was an increase in the cortisol and ADH activity, which could be explained by the total hypovolemia, induced by peritoneal dialisis...
