Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using natural compounds derived from plant kingdom is currently used as safe and low-cost technique for nanoparticles synthesis with important abilities to inhibit multidrug resistant microorganisms (MDR). ESKAPE pathogens, especially MDR ones, are widely spread in hospital and intensive care units. In the present study, AgNPs using Ducrosia flabellifolia aqueous extract were synthesized using a reduction method. The green synthesized D. flabellifolia-AgNPs were characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction assays...

The clinical manifestation of superficial candidiasis varies depending on the infectious sites and causative Candida species that brings a great challenge to diagnose or treat without mycological or pathological evidence in clinical settings. Oral mucosal candidiasis and onychomycosis are most common types of superficial candidiasis. Typically, oral mucosal candidiasis manifests as white or erythematous thrush coated on the tongue and other interior oral cavity; and onychomycosis caused by Candida spp. presents with thick, fragile, or cracked fingernails or toenails in yellow or white discoloration...

OBJECTIVE:  The etiology of oral candidiasis (OC) was Candida albicans , C. krusei , C. dubliniensis , C. tropicalis that are frequently found in human immunodeficiency virus/ acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) patients. Marine ascomycetes (MA) have been widely reported as an important producer of various antibiotic compounds. However, there is limited study of antifungal compounds from MA against Candida species. The aim of this study was to investigate the antifungal susceptibility of MA against Candida spp...

Antimicrobial peptides (AMP) represent an alternative in the treatment of fungal infections associated with countless deaths. Here, we report a new AMP, named KWI-19, which was designed based on a peptide encrypted in the sequence of an Inga laurina Kunitz-type inhibitor (ILTI). KWI-19 inhibited the growth of Candida species and acted as a fungicidal agent from 2.5 to 20 μmol L-1 , also showing synergistic activity with amphotericin B. Kinetic assays showed that KWI-19 killed Candida tropicalis cells within 60 min...

An effective approach for selective C-N bond formation for synthesising imidazo[1,2- a ] pyridine-based heterocycles using porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL) as a biocatalyst has been devised. Under moderate conditions, a series of imidazo[1,2- a ]pyridine-based heterocycle derivatives were synthesised with remarkable selectivity in good-to-excellent yields (89-95%). Further, the antimicrobial and antifungal activities of derivatives 3ha, 3ka, 3fa, 3hc, and 3eb were observed, and they were found to be biologically active in antimicrobial susceptibility tests for Gram-positive bacteria ( Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 and Staphylococcus auris ATCC 25923 ), Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 ) and fungal strains ( Candida albicans ATCC 90028 and Candida tropicalis ATCC 750 )...

Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are a relatively newer class of medications, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2013 to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. Over the past few years, the indications for SGLT2i have been expanded to decrease the risk of kidney disease and cardiovascular disease. SGLT2i are associated with an increased risk of euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis, urinary tract infections, and genital mycotic infections. There are a few case reports of severe invasive fungal infections due to Candida in patients using SGLT2i...

INTRODUCTION: Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infectious disorder of the innermost lining of the heart that can be fatal if left untreated. Infective endocarditis can spread beyond the endocardium into the myocardium and cause arrhythmias and myocardial wall rupture. Individuals with a history of intravenous drug use are at increased risk of developing IE and are at higher risk of dying, given their limited access to health care and adherence to treatment. METHODS: A medicolegal autopsy was performed on a 30-year-old woman with a history of intravenous drug use and recent assault after a hospital admission during which she did not survive resuscitation...

The aim of this article is to introduce the topic of newly designed peptides as well as their biological activity. We designed nine encoded peptides composed of six amino acids. All these peptides were synthesized with C-terminal amidation. To investigate the importance of increased hydrophobicity at the amino end of the peptides, all of them were subsequently synthesized with palmitic or lithocholic acid at the N-terminus. Antimicrobial activity was tested on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi...

Candida spp. are an important opportunistic pathogen that can represent a possible cause of severe infections, especially in immunocompromised individuals. The clinical impact of Candida spp. depends, in part, on the ability to form biofilms, communities of nestled cells into the extracellular matrix. In this study, we compared the biofilm formation ability of 83 strains of Candida spp. isolated from blood cultures and other materials, such as respiratory samples, urine, and exudate, and their sensitivity to fluconazole (FLZ)...

The diagnosis of Candida bloodstream infection (BSI) may rely on a PCR-based analysis of a positive blood culture (PBC) obtained from the patient at the time of BSI. In this study, a yeast DNA extraction protocol for use on PBCs was developed and evaluated with the molecular mouse (MM) yeast blood (YBL) chip-based PCR assay, which allowed us to detect nine medically relevant Candida species. We studied 125 simulated or clinical PBCs for Candida species. A positive correlation between the DNA concentration and colony-forming unit count was found for simulated (Spearman's ρ = 0...

The spread of fungi resistant to conventional drugs has become a threatening problem. In this context, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been considered as one of the main alternatives for controlling fungal infections. Here, we report the antifungal and antibiofilm activity and some clues about peptide RQ18's mechanism of action against Candida and Cryptococcus. This peptide inhibited yeast growth from 2.5 μM and killed all Candida tropicalis cells within 2 h incubation. Moreover, it showed a synergistic effect with antifungal agent the amphotericin b...
