Sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam] is an economically important crop for fresh and processed consumption and is widely cultivated worldwide, especially in China. Various sweetpotato cultivars with different storage root colors are presently available. The purple-fleshed sweetpotato obtains its color from anthocyanin accumulation in the storage roots, which is beneficial for both plant and human health. To date, the molecular mechanism of this anthocyanin accumulation has not been studied in detail. In our study, three cDNA libraries generated from 'Xuzi8' with dark-purple flesh, 'Xuzi6' with light-purple flesh, and 'Xu28' with white flesh were sequenced utilizing an Illumina HiSeq™ 2500 platform...

To facilitate the applications of home blood pressure (HBP) monitoring in clinical settings, the Taiwan Hypertension Society and the Taiwan Society of Cardiology jointly put forward the Consensus Statement on HBP monitoring according to up-to-date scientific evidence by convening a series of expert meetings and compiling opinions from the members of these two societies. In this Consensus Statement as well as recent international guidelines for management of arterial hypertension, HBP monitoring has been implemented in diagnostic confirmation of hypertension, identification of hypertension phenotypes, guidance of anti-hypertensive treatment, and detection of hypotensive events...

As per WHO estimates, around 17% of the adult Omani population are hypertensive. However, people with hypertension are often unaware of the diagnosis, and so the May Measurement Month (MMM) programme was set up to raise awareness of the importance of blood pressure (BP) screening. A cross-sectional screening of BP of subjects aged 18 years or more was carried out in May 2018 at various sites in Muscat, Oman. Screening sites were set up at the reception areas of participating hospitals, and at a few public areas such as shopping malls and workplaces of the volunteers...

Caspases are evolutionarily conserved proteases, which are inextricably linked with the apoptosis and immune system in mammals. However, the expression pattern and function of some caspases remain largely unknown in pufferfish. In this study, three different pufferfish caspases (caspase-2 (Pfcasp-2), caspase-3 (Pfcasp-3), and caspase-8 (Pfcasp-8)) were characterized, and their expression patterns and functions were determined following Aeromonas hydrophila infection. The open reading frames of Pfcasp-2, -3, and -8 are 1,320, 846, and 1455 bp, respectively...

Glucose transporter 2 (glut2) has been studied in mammals, aves, and several fish, while the comparative studies of glut2 in common carp are still lacking. In this study, glut2 was firstly isolated and characterized from the liver of common carp. The full-length cDNA of glut2 was 2351 bp with an open reading frame (ORF) of 1512 bp, encoding 503 amino acids. Alignment of glut2 amino acid sequences from different species revealed that common carp glut2 showed higher sequence identity with teleosts, and lower homology with mammals and amphibians...

Seagrass meadows are among the four most productive marine natural ecosystems in the world. Zostera japonica (Z. japonica) is the most widely distributed species of seagrass in China. Nucleotide exchange factors (NEFs) promote the release of ADP during heat stress, accelerating the rate-limiting step of Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70). Although NEFs play an important role in abiotic stress tolerance of plants, NEFs in seagrass have not been studied. In this study, we cloned Fes1 from Z. japonica (ZjFes1) by rapid amplification of the cDNA ends using RACE, and full length ZjFes1 was 1171 bp...

Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine that exerts its biological functions through interaction with its receptor system consisting of a ligand-specific IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) and a common signal-transducing receptor (gp130). In this study, OnIL-6R and Ongp130 genes from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were identified, and their roles in bacterial or viral infection and in regulation of inflammatory response involved in IL-6 were investigated. Ticks, obligatory blood-feeding arthropods, are a major pathogen vector in humans and animals worldwide. Anti-tick vaccines are an exciting alternative to chemical acaricides for controlling these disease-transmitting vectors. However, identification of protective antigens for anti-tick vaccine development is challenging. Different ribosomal proteins play multifunctional roles in tick survival and feeding. Here, we first report the cloning and molecular characterization of ribosomal protein S27 (RPS-27) from the hard tick Haemaphysalis longicornis...

Previous studies on the effect of long working hours on blood pressure have shown inconsistent results. Mixed findings could be attributable to limitations related to blood pressure measurement and the lack of consideration of masked hypertension. The objective was to determine whether individuals who work long hours have a higher prevalence of masked and sustained hypertension. Data were collected at 3-time points over 5 years from 3547 white-collar workers. Long working hours were self-reported, and blood pressure was measured using Spacelabs 90207...

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia are important contributors to the development and progression of atherosclerosis. The coexistence of these two conditions is rather common: hypercholesterolaemia is present in 40-60% of hypertensive patients. Remarkably, patient compliance with antihypertensive regimens is better than with statin therapy. Thus, the inclusion of statins and blood pressure-lowering agents into a fixed combination might even double the effectiveness of statin therapy, and thereby achieve significantly greater reduction of cardiovascular risk...

Cardiovascular diseases remain the Philippines' leading cause of mortality, with hypertension as a prevalent contributory risk factor. We took part in May Measurement Month 2017 (MMM17), a global initiative to raise awareness of high blood pressure (BP) and to serve as a temporary solution to the lack of screening programs worldwide. Following the standard MMM protocol, data for 271 604 screened individuals were submitted from the Philippines. After multiple imputation, 91 994 (34.3%) were hypertensive; 28 662 out of 205 158 participants (14...

Demographic data and data pertaining to the use of the neuromuscular blocker and its reversal were analysed. After intravenous administration of 0.44±0.4 mg/kg atracurium (total dose), 11 rabbits experienced at least one of the following cardiovascular responses: hypotension, defined as systolic arterial pressure less than 75 mmHg (n=6), hypotension with decreased heart rate (HR) (n=1), hypotension with increased HR (n=1), decreased arterial blood pressure (ABP) without hypotension (n=6), decreased ABP with decreased HR (n=1), or increased HR (n=2, ABP reading could not be taken)...

PURPOSE: Among computer workers, visual complaints, and neck pain are highly prevalent.
