In December 2021, we lost a pioneer in the field of stress research who inspired generations of scientists. Mary Dallman was an expert on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, its interactions with a wide variety of other physiological systems and the impact of chronic changes of HPA function on energy metabolism and adiposity. She was not only an excellent scientist, she was a great role model and mentor for young scientists, especially women. She encouraged and supported many of her trainees even long after they left the lab...

Conservation translocations have become increasingly popular for 'rewilding' areas that have lost their native fauna. These multispecies translocations are complex and need to consider the requirements of each individual species as well as the influence of likely interactions among them. The Dirk Hartog Island National Park Ecological Restoration Project, Return to 1616 , aspires to restore ecological function to Western Australia's largest island. Since 2012, pest animals have been eradicated, and conservation translocations of seven fauna species have been undertaken, with a further six planned...

The formation of inflorescences and flowers is essential for the successful reproduction of angiosperms. In the past few decades, genetic studies have identified the LEAFY transcription factor and the UNUSUAL FLORAL ORGANS (UFO) F-box protein as two major regulators of flower development in a broad range of angiosperm species. Recent research has revealed that UFO acts as a transcriptional cofactor, redirecting the LEAFY floral regulator to novel cis-elements. In this review, we summarize the various roles of UFO across species, analyze past results in light of new discoveries and highlight the key questions that remain to be solved...

The simple fact is that hospitals that do not innovate today may not be solvent tomorrow. Although not every hospital has a budget for a million-dollar innovation laboratory, a pop-up innovation lab can be set up for less than $1,000 with materials available at a local superstore. In 2014, Drs. Ibata and Olver visited leading innovation labs to identify best practices for curricula and materials. The site visits were funded by a grant to support the development of a rapid-cycle innovation training program. The lessons learned are shared here with sample agendas and material lists to set up a low-cost innovation lab...

The blood-brain barrier is the interface through which the brain interacts with the milieu and consists mainly of a sophisticated network of brain endothelial cells that forms blood vessels and selectively moves molecules inside and outside the brain through multiple mechanisms of transport. Although brain endothelial cell function is crucial for brain homeostasis, their role in neurodegenerative diseases has historically not been considered with the same importance as other brain cells such as microglia, astroglia, neurons, or even molecules such as amyloid beta, Tau, or alpha-synuclein...

The goal of this new series is to address the broader concepts in technology as they relate to plastic surgery and thus enhance the technology quotient of readers and, in turn, of the specialty and specialty society. Critical topics related to technology, their current and future impact on plastic surgery, and the opportunities and barriers in research, education, and advocacy will be addressed...

The pursuit of novelty can be a challenging experience that often comes with stress. Thinking outside the box can even lead to ethical dilemmas, particularly when innovators are under the pressure to meet deadlines. In this study, we examine creativity as a stress-inducing process, especially when employees encounter setbacks during their pursuit of novelty. Our aim was to explore the relationship between ethical leadership and creativity from a Conservation of Resources (COR) perspective. Using two distinct research samples, we discovered that help seeking behavior during the pursuit of novelty is crucial for acquiring resources in the workplace and serves as a mediator in the relationship between ethical leadership and creativity...

People wear many salient hats across the different parts of their lives and recent advances in the work-life literature have called attention to the necessary addition of personal life activities to be studied as a unique facet of nonwork to better understand interrole relationships. We therefore draw on enrichment theory to examine why and when employees' participation in personal life activities can positively influence creativity at work through nonwork cognitive developmental resources. Moreover, by integrating insights from construal level theory, this research sheds new light on the ways people think about their personal life activities as playing a discernible role in how people can generate and/or apply resources from their activities...

Gonorrhea is an urgent antimicrobial resistance threat and its therapeutic options are continuously getting restricted. Moreover, no vaccine has been approved against it so far. Hence, the present study aimed to introduce novel immunogenic and drug targets against antibiotic-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains. In the first step, the core proteins of 79 complete genomes of N. gonorrhoeae were retrieved. Next, the surface-exposed proteins were evaluated from different aspects such as antigenicity, allergenicity, conservancy, and B-cell and T-cell epitopes to introduce promising immunogenic candidates...

Global climate change has resulted in an increase in the number and intensity of environmental heat waves, both in areas traditionally associated with hot temperatures and in areas where heat waves did not previously occur. For military communities around the world, these changes pose progressively increasing risks of heat-related illnesses and interference with training sessions. This is a significant and persistent "non-combat threat" to both training and operational activities of military personnel. In addition to these important health and safety concerns, there are broader implications in terms of the ability of worldwide security forces to effectively do their job (particularly in areas that historically already have high ambient temperatures)...
