In the realm of federated learning (FL), the conventional dual-layered architecture, comprising a central parameter server and peripheral devices, often encounters challenges due to its significant reliance on the central server for communication and security. This dependence becomes particularly problematic in scenarios involving potential malfunctions of devices and servers. While existing device-edge-cloud hierarchical FL (HFL) models alleviate some dependence on central servers and reduce communication overheads, they primarily focus on load balancing within edge computing networks and fall short of achieving complete decentralization and edge-centric model aggregation...

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic revealed the vulnerability of the tourism industry, triggering a call for a structural shift. This study focuses on COVID-19 impacts on primate tourism sites using the resilience-based wildlife tourism study of Jones et al. (2023) as an interpretive framework. Using an online survey, we collected data on impacts, changes, and challenges experienced at primate tourism destinations in various parts of the world. Based on 33 responses, the study found that the most profound impacts were financial, compromising the ability to run facilities and facilitate tourism due mainly to limitation of access to sites for tourists and/or staff/researchers...

Extensive research has been conducted on the correlation between viral infections and hematological cancers ever since the identification of the Rous Sarcoma Virus as a cancer-causing agent. Numerous viruses, such as the Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, human immunodeficiency virus, human T-lymphotropic virus 1, and severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2, have been identified as potential contributors to the development and progression of cancer by disrupting normal cellular processes...

Spasticity is a prevalent symptom of upper motor neuron syndrome, becoming debilitating when hindering voluntary movement and motor function and causing contractures and pain. Functional neurosurgery plays a crucial role in treating severe spasticity. Despite extensive literature on SDR for lower limb spasticity, there is a scarcity of papers regarding the procedure in the cervical region to alleviate upper limb spasticity. This case report details a cervical dorsal rhizotomy (CDR) performed for upper limb spasticity, resulting in significant improvement in spasticity with sustained outcomes and low complication rates...

Rhodosporidium toruloides is a novel cell factory used to synthesis carotenoids, biosurfactants, and biofuel feedstocks. However, research on R. toruloides has generally centred on the manufacture of biochemicals, while analyses of its longevity have received scant attention. Understanding of R. toruloides longevity under different nutrient conditions could help to improve its biotechnological significance and metabolite production. Glucosylglycerol (GG) and proline are osmoprotectants that could revert the harmful effects of environmental stress...

Among the repetitive elements, satellite DNA (SatDNA) emerges as extensive arrays of highly similar tandemly repeated units, spanning megabases in length. Given that the satDNA PboSat01-176, previously characterized in P. boiei, prompted our interest for having a high abundance in P. boiei and potential for centromeric satellite, here, we employed various approaches, including low coverage genome sequencing, followed by computational analysis and chromosomal localization techniques in four Proceratophrys species and, investigating the genomic presence and sharing, as well as its potential for chromosomal centromere marker in Proceratophrys frog species...

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between quantitative MR parameters and prognostic factors in prostate cancer (PCa). METHOD: A total of 186 patients with pathologically confirmed PCa who underwent preoperative multiparametric MRI (mpMRI), including synthetic MRI (SyMRI), were enrolled from two medical centers. The histogram metrics of SyMRI [T1, T2, proton density (PD)] and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were extracted. The Mann‒Whitney U test or Student's t test was employed to determine the association between these histogram features and the prognostically relevant factors...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are major public health issues worldwide, with over 38 million people living with AD and approximately 48 million people (27-69 million) experiencing TBI annually. Neurodegenerative conditions are characterised by the accumulation of neurotoxic amyloid beta (Aβ) and microtubule-associated protein Tau (Tau) with current treatments focused on managing symptoms rather than addressing the underlying cause. Heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) are a diverse family of macromolecules that interact with various proteins and ligands and promote neurogenesis, a process where new neural cells are formed from stem cells...

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition characterized by a systemic inflammatory response to infection. Despite extensive research on its pathophysiology, effective therapeutic approaches remain a challenge. This study investigated the potential of resveratrol (RV) and silver nanoparticle-enhanced resveratrol (AgNP-RV) as treatments for sepsis-induced lung injury using a rat model of polymicrobial sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). The study focused on evaluating changes in oxidative status (TAS, TOS, and OSI) and the expression of inflammatory and apoptotic markers (IL-1β, TNF-α, P2X7R, TLR4, Caspase-3, and Bcl-2) in lung tissue...

Molecules with high point-group symmetry are interesting prototype species in the textbook. As transition metal-centered boron clusters tend to have highly symmetric structures to fulfill multicenter bonding and high stability, new boron clusters with rare point-group symmetry may be viable. Through in-depth scrutiny over the structures of experimentally already observed transition metal-centered boron-wheel complexes, geometric and electronic design principles are summarized, based on which we studied M©B11 k - ( M = Y, La; Zr, Hf; k = 1, 2) clusters and found that a Y©B11 2- boron-wheel complex has an unprecedented D 11 h point-group symmetry...

The Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) consortium's transdiagnostic dimensional model of psychopathology has considerable support; however, this model has been underresearched in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P), a population that may advance the model. Fear reactivity is an early emerging temperament trait that predicts longer term behavioral and health outcomes. The current analysis tests the hypothesis, an extension of prior research on maternal immune activation (MIA), that the prenatal maternal immune system is a reliable predictor of observed fear reactivity in infancy. The analysis is based on a prospective longitudinal cohort study that collected data from the first trimester and conducted observational assessments of temperament at approximately 12 months of age ( n = 281 infants)...

Apramycin is a widely used aminoglycoside antibiotic with applications in veterinary medicine. It is composed of a 4-amino-4-deoxy-d-glucose moiety and the pseudodisaccharide aprosamine, which is an adduct of 2-deoxystreptamine and an unusual eight-carbon bicyclic dialdose. Despite its extensive study and relevance to medical practice, the biosynthetic pathway of this complex aminoglycoside nevertheless remains incomplete. Herein, the remaining unknown steps of apramycin biosynthesis are reconstituted in vitro , thereby leading to a comprehensive picture of its biological assembly...
