BACKGROUND: Collaboration between clinical practice and research is often warranted. Extended periods of collaboration integrating research and practice is however rare. This article is about a series of joint research projects through the course of 8 years involving the Danish Center of Psychotraumatology and five regional centres dedicated to combating the sequelae of child abuse across Denmark. METHOD: We describe the development of a standardized assessment battery and how this work evolves, analyses of administrative data, what happens after the assessment, the impact of working with child abuse on employees, profiles of abuse that vary by gender, national conferences and training programs, and international collaboration...

Upamostat is an orally available small-molecule serine protease inhibitor that is a highly potent inhibitor of trypsin 1, trypsin 2, trypsin 3 (PRSS1/2/3), and the urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA). These enzymes are expressed in many cancers, especially during tissue remodeling and subsequent tumor cell invasion. Opaganib (ABC294640), a novel, orally available small molecule is a selective inhibitor of the phosphorylation of sphingosine to sphingosine-1-phosphate (S-1-P) by sphingosine kinase 2 (SPHK2)...

A lure composed of ( Z )-11-hexadecenal, ( Z )-11-hexadecenyl acetate, and ( Z )-11-hexadecen-1-ol at a ratio of 5 : 5 : 1 at a dose of 0.01 mg was optimal for the attraction of the Vietnamese strain of the diamondback moth (DBM). The combination of the sex pheromone with a plant volatile, allyl isothiocyanate, significantly increased the attraction of the pheromone trap. Females were also attracted, but they were only about 2% of all moths captured. In plots with 120-130 traps per ha, mass trapping with the combined lures reduced the DBM larval densities in cabbage fields as effectively as the spraying of insecticides 6 to 8 times...

BACKGROUND: Correct classification of estrogen receptor (ER) status is essential for prognosis and treatment planning in patients with breast cancer (BC). Therefore, it is recommended to sample tumor tissue from an accessible metastasis. However, ER expression can show intra- and intertumoral heterogeneity. 16α-[18 F]fluoroestradiol ([18 F]FES) Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) allows noninvasive whole-body (WB) identification of ER distribution and is usually performed as a single static image 60 min after radiotracer injection...

Stress granules are an integral part of the stress response that are formed from non-translating mRNAs aggregated with proteins. While much is known about stress granules, the factors that drive their mRNA localization are incompletely described. Modification of mRNA can alter the properties of the nucleobases and affect processes such as translation, splicing and localization of individual transcripts. Here, we show that the RNA modification N4-acetylcytidine (ac4C) on mRNA associates with transcripts enriched in stress granules and that stress granule localized transcripts with ac4C are specifically translationally regulated...

Diatoms are one of the most abundant photosynthetic organisms on earth and contribute largely to atmospheric oxygen production. They contain fucoxanthin and chlorophyll-a/c binding proteins (FCPs) as light-harvesting complexes with a remarkable adaptation to the fluctuating light on ocean surfaces. To understand the basis of the photosynthetic process in diatoms, the excitation energy funneling within FCPs must be probed. A state-of-the-art multiscale analysis within a quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics framework has been employed...

Forests are attracting attention as a promising avenue to provide nutritious and "free" food without damaging the environment. Yet, we lack knowledge on the extent to which this holds in areas with sparse tree cover, such as in West Africa. This is largely due to the fact that existing methods are poorly designed to quantify tree cover in drylands. In this study, we estimate how various levels of tree cover across West Africa affect children's (aged 12-59 months) consumption of vitamin A-rich foods. We do so by combining detailed tree cover estimates based on PlanetScope imagery (3 m resolution) with Demographic Health Survey data from >15,000 households...

Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is the end-stage of continuous inflammation and fibrosis in the pancreas evolving from acute- to recurrent acute-, early, and, finally, end-stage CP. Currently, prevention is the only way to reduce disease burden. In this setting, early detection is of great importance. Due to the anatomy and risks associated with direct sampling from pancreatic tissue, most of our information on the human pancreas arises from circulating biomarkers thought to be involved in pancreatic pathophysiology or injury...

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a network of macromolecules that presents a vital scaffold for cells and enables multiple ways of cellular communication. Thus, it is essential for many physiological processes such as development, tissue morphogenesis, homeostasis, the shape and partially the size of the body and its organs. To ensure these, the composition of the ECM is tissue-specific and highly dynamic. ECM homeostasis is therefore tightly controlled by several mechanisms. Here, we show that FMI-1, the homolog of the Adhesion GPCR Flamingo/CELSR/ADGRC in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, modulates the composition of the ECM by controlling the production both of ECM molecules such as collagens and also of ECM modifying enzymes...

Adjuvant Temozolomide is considered the front-line Glioblastoma chemotherapeutic treatment; yet not all patients respond. Latest trends in clinical trials usually refer to Doxorubicin; yet it can lead to severe side-effects if administered in high doses. While Glioblastoma prognosis remains poor, little is known about the combination of the two chemotherapeutics. Patient-derived spheroids were generated and treated with a range of Temozolomide/Doxorubicin concentrations either as monotherapy or in combination...

Resistance to radiation remains a significant clinical challenge in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). It is therefore important to identify the underlying molecular and cellular features that drive acquired resistance. We generated genetically matched NSCLC cell lines to investigate characteristics of acquired resistance. Murine Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) and human A549 cells acquired an approximate 1.5-2.5-fold increase in radiation resistance as compared to their parental match, which each had unique intrinsic radio-sensitivities...

Serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC) is the fallopian tube precursor lesion for most cases of pelvic high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC). To date, the morphologic, molecular, and clinical heterogeneity of STIC and a less atypical putative precursor lesion, termed serous tubal intraepithelial lesion, has not been well characterized. Better understanding of precursor heterogeneity could impact the clinical management of women with incidental STICs (without concurrent carcinoma) identified in cases of prophylactic or opportunistic salpingectomy...

Whereas temporal variability of plant phenology in response to climate change has already been well studied, the spatial variability of phenology is not well understood.
