Isolated polyps of the upper digestive tract are rarely diagnosed in children, being usually an incidental finding during endoscopic exploration. The diagnostic, therapy, and outcome of these lesions are based on endoscopy and pathology. In a 5-year period, clinical features, topography, size, pathology, therapeutics, and progression of esophagogastric polyps founded in children addressed to our pediatric gastroenterology unit were studied. The authors encountered 3 lesions in teenagers aged 13 to 17 years two males (2M), from a total number of 2140 upper digestive endoscopies (0...

To determine ultrasound measurements indicative of abnormalities in small, medium and large joints, we conducted a cross-sectional study comparing 60 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 78 healthy volunteers. A MyLab 60 ultrasound machine (Esaote) and a linear multifrequency probe were used. Quantitative measurements of synovial recesses and semiquantitative measurements of synovial hyperplasia, power Doppler and bone erosion (scores = 0-3) were performed. The cutoff values for synovial recesses indicating RA (receiver operating characteristic curve, area under the curve >0...

INTRODUCTION: The complications of the mixed hernia need, often, surgical treatment. In the asymtomatic patients this one treatment is controversial, due to her complex repair and the high percentage of relapse informed in the long term. The surgical classic routes, they present raised morbi-mortality related to the extent of the incisions, to long hospitable stays and slow recovery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between October, 2001 to November, 2007 we check 39 patients with hernia hiatal mixed with a middle ages of 65 years (35-78 years)...

BACKGROUND: In the systemic sclerosis (SSc) gastrointestinal manifestations are present up to 90 % and the esophagus is the most affected organ. The purpose was to investigate clinical, endoscopic and manometric upper gastroesophageal manifestations in patients with SSc. METHODS: We studied 60 patients with SSc, mean age of 48 +/- 11 years and a mean disease evolution of 11 +/- 8 years. An endoscopy of gastro-esophageal tract and esophageal manometry were performed...

BACKGROUND: The safety and good tolerability of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) has already been proved in allergic patients, but only one study has investigated the occurrence of immediate adverse reactions in allergic patients after a 2-hour ultra-rush regimen of SLIT performed with a chemically modified extract (sublingual monomeric allergoid, Lais, Lofarma S.p.A., Milan). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the occurrence of immediate adverse reactions in allergic patients after a very fast (20 minutes) ultra-rush regimen of sublingual allergoid SLIT...

Ranitidine may cause liver injuries ranging from transient, subclinical serum transaminases increase every 100-1,000 treated patients to cholestatic hepatitis in less than 1/100,000. Other H2-receptor antagonists are more dangerous: 11 toxic hepatitis cases have been reported as adverse effect after 1 year of marketed ebrotidine. A 75-year-old male with ischemic cardiopathy history was started on an 8 days treatment of oral ranitidine due to pirosis, without any other changes of therapy; 48 h after drug withdrawal, light-coloured stools, dark urine and icteric scleras developed...

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: We performed a case control study to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics, and identify the risk factors associated to gastroesophageal reflux among patients of the gastroenterology unit at the HNSE EsSalud - Cusco. There were included 645 patients with endoscopic diagnosis of esophagitis between january 1, 1999 and december 31, 2000. Afterwards, we selected a sample of 125 cases and 124 non related matched controls. The statistical profiles about gastroesophageal reflux, the digestive endoscopy service digests and the clinic histories of patients were reviewed; and the case and control samples were interviewed namelessly with their previous consent...

BACKGROUND: It has been recently shown that Rifaximin, although given as a suspension, plus omeprazole, may be a promising antibiotic against Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) and worthy of further study. AIM: We have therefore evaluated Rifaximin suspension versus Rifaximin pills, in a randomly openly allocated fashion study, in H pylori positive patients. METHODS: Twenty patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms (M/F: 13/7, age range 28-68; mean 49...

Chronic Esophageal reflux induces reflux esophagitis, which is a common finding in gastroenterological practice. Reflux esophagitis produce symptoms like pirosis, regurgitation and in some cases respiratory complains resembling asthma or angina-like chest pain. The pathophysiology of this disease is based on a multifactorial origin, which usually results in the chronic evolution of the disease. In recent years, there have appeared new evidences pointing out to alterations in the relaxing mechanisms of the lower esophageal sphincter; however, some patients having reflux esophagitis show normal shincteric pressure...

UNLABELLED: Mechano--and chemo--sensitivity were studied in 20 normal control patients and 73 patients suffering from pirosis, chest pain or both symptoms. Upper endoscopy, balloon and acid perfussion tests were performed. Balloon was inflated up to 15 ml. and deflated, in 2 cm. steps from 38 to 22 cm. from S.D.A. The number of patients with response, volume of balloon distension that evoked symptoms, place and irradiation of pain or discomfort were registered and plotted on 13 frontal and 10 dorsal zones...

Two patients with attacks of choking caused by aspiration of gastric contents in the laryngotracheal tube are presented. One had such severe attacks of respiratory arrest, that tracheostomy was done. The common symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux such as pirosis, acid regurgitation, or retrosternal burning were absent in both patients and upper gut radiological and endoscopic examinations were negative. Histology of the oesophageal mucosa showed a deep chronic eosophagitis, and the 24-hour pH-monitoring of the upper oesophagus showed frequent gastro-oesophageal refluxes...
