INTRODUCTION: The one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) is an effective treatment to induce sustained weight loss in morbidly obese patients. Concerns remain regarding the development of reflux. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an "anti-reflux suture" as anti-reflux modification to prevent reflux. METHOD: This is a single-center retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent a primary OAGB at the Center Obesity North-Netherlands (CON) between January 2015 and December 2016...

Huaier ( Trametes robiniophila Murr ), a Chinese traditional herb of medicine, has demonstrated promising curative effects in clinical treatment for various tumors. There are documented experiments showing the biological functions of Huaier with its antineoplastic molecular mechanisms: restraining proliferation and metastasis, arresting cell cycle, inducing apoptosis, pyrosis, and autophagy, anti-intratumoral angiogenesis, attenuating characteristics of tumor stem-like cells, interfering with the function of the tumor-related immune system, reversing drug resistance, and enhancing the sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs, etc...

We describe the design and manufacturing method of a lightweight C-doped MoS2 aerogel with a special regular banana leaflike microstructure used for high-performance microwave absorbers. The aerogel precursor was first fabricated by a self-assembly process between alginate (Alg) and ammonium thiomolybdate (ATM), where Alg as a template was assembled with ATM into regular banana leaflike architectures along the ice growth direction during oriented freezing. After pyrolysis at 900 °C, the C-doped MoS2 aerogels maintained low densities and porous hierarchal banana leaflike structures, where the banana leaves ranged in diameter from about 2 to 5 μm with the growth of small branches...

Nocardia seriolae, a Gram-positive bacterium, is the main pathogen of fish nocardiosis. Protein NlpC/P60 is a cell-wall peptidase and a potential virulence factor of N. seriolae. Subcellular localization research revealed that both NlpC/P60-GFP and NlpC/P60Δsig-GFP fusion proteins were evenly distributed in the whole cell of fathead minnow (FHM) cells. Furthermore, typical apoptotic features, such as nuclear pyrosis and apoptotic bodies, were observed in the transfected FHM cells and grouper spleen cells by the overexpression of protein NlpC/P60...

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a relapsing inflammatory disease exacerbated by many triggers. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative bacterium causing the liberation of many cytokines and having a role in systemic inflammation. We assessed over a period of 12 months the presence of H. pylori in psoriatic patients undergoing biologic therapy and how PASI improved after its eradication. METHODS: We performed an interventional, prospective, cohort, exploratory and mono-centric study in patients affected by moderate-severe psoriasis during biological therapy to assess the correlation between psoriasis (moderate to severe forms), and H...

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) printing may represent a useful tool to provide, in surgery, a good representation of surgical scenario before surgery, particularly in complex cases. Recently, such a technology has been utilized to plan operative interventions in spinal, neuronal, and cardiac surgeries, but few data are available in the literature about their role in the upper gastrointestinal surgery. The feasibility of this technology has been described in a single case of gastroesophageal reflux disease with complex anatomy due to a markedly tortuous descending aorta...

Even though endometriosis presents one of the most common gynaecological diseases, the pathogenesis is insufficiently studied. Besides immunologic, inflammatory or oxidative processes, recent studies also suggest an influence of nutrition on disease onset and progression. Because data about the actual nutrient intake of endometriosis patients are scarce, we aimed to examine the actual nutrient intake and potential influencing factors in these women. A total of 156 women with endometriosis (EM) and 52 age-matched controls were included in this retrospective case-control study...

INTRODUCTION: Roux-an-Y gastric bypass (RYGP) is one of the most important bariatric procedures and its results are well known in terms of weight loss and comorbid improvement. The major limitation of this technique is the difficult exploration of the excluded stomach and duodenum. Some Authors are performing the gastric bypass with fundectomy and, according to Literature, it is feasible and effective, with major advantage of explorable gastric pouch. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is an often debilitating condition characterised by retrograde flow of content from stomach into the oesophagus, where the low pH of the stomach acid irritates the mucosa of the oesophagus. The most dominant symptoms in GORD are pyrosis, regurgitation, and dysphagia. Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) was first described in 1986. Following this description, the use has greatly increased in the treatment of allergic rhinitis, as an alternative to subcutaneously administered immunotherapy...

BACKGROUND: Drugs represent one of the etiologic causes of acute rhabdomyolysis (AR) with drug-induced rhabdomyolysis most commonly associated with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. AR etiology can also result from the use of diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, and omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor. Cases of AR triggered by pantoprazole have never before been reported, although it has been observed that its inclusion in multiple drug therapies can result in muscle events...

Glomus tumours are benign tumours typically arising from the glomus bodies and primarily found under the fingernails or toenails. These rare neoplasms account for <2% of all soft tissue tumours and are generally not found in the gastrointestinal tract. We report a case of a 40-year-old man presenting with recurrent epigastric pain and pyrosis. Endoscopy revealed a solitary tumour in the antrum of the stomach. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy was suspicious for a gastrointestinal stroma tumour. After CT indicated the resectability of the tumour, showing neither lymphatic nor distant metastases, a laparoscopic-assisted gastric wedge resection was performed...

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea is a frequently occurring adverse event during treatment with vascular endothelial growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (VEGFR TKIs) and is mostly accompanied by abdominal cramps, flatulence and pyrosis. These complaints impair quality of life and lead to dose reductions and treatment interruptions. It is hypothesized that the diarrhea might be due to ischemia in bowel mucosa or inflammation, but the exact underlying pathophysiological mechanism of the diarrhea is still unknown...

Surgery for refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatal hernia leads to recurrence or persisting dysphagia in a minority of patients. Redo antireflux surgery in GERD and hiatal hernia is known for higher morbidity and mortality. This study aims to evaluate conventional versus robot-assisted laparoscopic redo antireflux surgery, with the objective to detect possible advantages for the robot-assisted approach. A single institute cohort of 75 patients who underwent either conventional laparoscopic or robot-assisted laparoscopic redo surgery for recurrent GERD or severe dysphagia between 2008 and 2013 were included in the study...

INTRODUCTION: Epiphrenic diverticula (ED) represent about 20% of oesophageal diverticula. They are considered to be pulsion diverticula, characterized by out pouchings of the oesophageal mucosa originating in the distal 10 cm of the oesophagus and are frequently associated with spastic oesophageal dysmotility. The most frequent clinical manifestations of ED are dysphagia, regurgitations and chest pain. Only symptomatic diverticula should be treated by surgery. The surgical procedure can be performed minimally invasively by robotic approach and consists of diverticulectomy, hiatus calibration and an antireflux procedure, usually adding an esophagomiotomy as well...

BACKGROUND: The link between organizing pneumonia (OP) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is not well known. There is little evidence in the literature to establish a causal link between GERD and OP. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to assess the hypothesis that OP is more severe when it is associated with GERD and that it leads to more frequent relapses. METHODS: In a retrospective study on 44 patients suffering from OP, we compared the clinical, radiological and histological characteristics of 2 groups, 1 composed of patients with GERD (n = 20) and the other of patients without GERD (n = 24)...
