The objective was to determine the range of hearing improvement (in dB) post ventilation tube insertion in children with chronic otitis media with effusion (COME), and whether there was a difference in hearing improvement between age groups and genders. This study also investigated whether there was a difference in the mean hearing improvement between the left and right ear, how many months passed before recovery of eustachian tube function, and how long the aeration of the middle ear lasted. The children included in the study were between six and twelve years of age, diagnosed with COME by audiological processing (type B tympanometric recording and conductive hearing loss up to 40 dB on pure tone audiometry) and underwent surgical insertion of ventilation tubes in both ears...

Background: Chronic otitis media affects approximately 2% of the global population, causing significant hearing loss and diminishing the quality of life. However, there is a lack of studies focusing on outcome prediction for otitis media patients undergoing canal-wall-down mastoidectomy. Methods: This study proposes a recovery prediction model for chronic otitis media patients undergoing canal-wall-down mastoidectomy, utilizing data from 298 patients treated at Korea University Ansan Hospital between March 2007 and August 2020...

BACKGROUND: Peripheral blood monocytes can be subdivided into different subsets based on the CD14/CD16 surface characteristics. Monocytes are a major source of cytokine secretion of pro-inflammatory immune responses, whereas CD16+ monocyte subsets can also contribute to persistent inflammation in the context of chronic diseases. However, the regulation and cellular characteristics of circulating monocyte subsets in patients with chronic otitis media (COM), one of the largest public health burdens, remains largely unknown...

OBJECTIVE: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a relatively rare genetic disorder that affects approximately 1 in 20,000 people. Approximately 50 genes are currently known to cause PCD. In light of differences in causative genes and the medical system in Japan compared with other countries, a practical guide was needed for the diagnosis and management of Japanese PCD patients. METHODS: An ad hoc academic committee was organized under the Japanese Rhinologic Society to produce a practical guide, with participation by committee members from several academic societies in Japan...

OBJECTIVES: There is data scarcity on the overall effects of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) on otitis media (OM) in low- and middle-income countries. The impact of the 13-valent PCV (PCV13) program on OM was evaluated in Cameroon where infant vaccination was implemented in July 2011 using a 3-dose primary series at 6, 10 and 14 weeks of age. METHODS: Through community-based surveillance, we used a retrospective cohort study design to assess OM prevalence among PCV13-vaccinated children aged 24 to 36 months in 2015...

BACKGROUND: The microscopic middle ear surgery involves a limited operating space and numerous important anatomical structures in which good visualization is crucial, as even a small amount of bleeding can greatly affect the clarity of surgical field. This study aims to investigate whether intravenous 1gram of tranexamic acid can improve surgical visualization and further shorten the operation time in microscopic middle ear surgery. METHODS: This study is a prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled trial conducted from December 2021 to December 2022, enrolling patients who were scheduled for microscopic modified radical mastoidectomy due to chronic otitis media...

A cholesteatoma is an expansion of keratinizing squamous epithelium that enters the middle ear cleft from the outer layer of the tympanic membrane or ear canal. Choleatomas are always treated surgically. Recurrence of the illness presents another challenge for the patient and the surgeon, though. There have been reports of recurrence rates as high as 30% in adults and as high as 70% in children. Here, we describe a case of persistent recurrent otorrhea following revision surgery, along with acquired recurrent cholesteatoma following canal wall down surgery...

Tuberculous otitis media is an uncommon cause of chronic suppurative infection affecting the middle ear and mastoid. Unfortunately, the signs and symptoms of tuberculous otitis media are very similar to those of non-tuberculous otitis media, which can make early diagnosis challenging. It is crucial to diagnose and treat the condition early to prevent damage to the ear and potential complications involving the central nervous system. We present a case of a 13-year-old Saudi girl who presented with a two-week history of headaches associated with photophobia...

BACKGROUND: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a prevalent and persistent middle ear condition that not only affects auditory health but also potentially influences various aspects of an individual's life. This study explores the correlation between CSOM, depression, anxiety, and stress, using the 21-item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS 21), also assessing quality of life (QoL) using the Chronic Ear Survey (CES) questionnaire. The primary objective of this study was to gather prospective audiological data along with information on both disease-specific quality of life and psychological well-being, utilizing validated measurement instruments...

An obliterated Eustachian tube (ET) is a rare occurrence that can lead to chronic otitis media (OM) and aural fullness even with treatment. Our study presents a review of the literature on methods of stenting the ET. We additionally present a case of a man with mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the ET who underwent a radical nasal pharyngectomy with reconstruction and adjuvant radiation, and who had symptoms of intolerable otorrhea after tympanostomy tube placement to treat aural fullness and mucoid OM. We used a novel method of stenting the ET using a transnasal lighted guidewire catheter and steroid eluting stents placed along the entire medial ET...

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is often associated with permanent tympanic membrane (TM) perforation and conductive hearing loss. The current clinical gold standard, using autografts and allografts, suffers from several drawbacks. Artificial replacement materials can help to overcome these drawbacks. Therefore, scaffolds fabricated through digital light processing (DLP) were herein created to support TM regeneration. Various UV-curable printing inks, including gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), gelatin-norbornene-norbornene (GelNBNB) (crosslinked with thiolated gelatin (GelSH)) and alkene-functionalized poly-ε-caprolactone (E-PCL) (crosslinked with pentaerythritol tetrakis(3-mercaptopropionate) (PETA4SH)) were optimized regarding photo-initiator (PI) and photo-absorber (PA) concentrations through viscosity characterization, photo-rheology and the establishment of working curves for DLP...

Early diagnosis of PIDD helps to improve the quality of life of affected children and prevent permanent consequences such as organ damage. Hence, awareness of PIDD is a must in the community to aid in early detection. Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis is a systemic necrotizing vasculitis that affects small to medium-sized vessels. We describe two cases of patulous Eustachian tube (PET) in patients with otitis media with ANCA-associated vasculitis (OMAAV). The two cases presented in this paper had previously been diagnosed with Eustachian tube (ET) stenosis, and both presented with bilateral aural fullness, with one also experiencing postnasal drip and hearing loss. Both patients experienced positive myeloperoxidase (MPO)-ANCA and negative proteinase 3 (PR3)-ANCA, and treatment for ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) resulted in a diagnosis of PET...
