BACKGROUND: Cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oropharynx were compared with other head and neck cancer (HNC) anatomic subsites in patients treated at the provincial referral centre for HNC, the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre (NSCC). METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed on HNC patients assessed at the NSCC between 2010 and 2011. Patient demographics, disease characteristics, treatment details and outcomes, including recurrence rates and survival were collected...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of solitary lymph node (LN) metastasis on the prognosis of gastric cancer. METHODS: Clinical data of 280 patients with gastric cancer who underwent D(2) radical resection from January 1995 to December 2003 were analyzed retrospectively. Among them, solitary LN metastasis was proven pathologically in 83 cases(solitary LN metastasis group), while node-negative metastasis proven in 197 cases (node-negative group). The 5-year survival rate was compared between two groups and between patients with and without skipping LN metastasis...

The SERS spectra of serums from the healthy persons and rash patients were measured. In the serum of rash, the band of amide I appeared at 1648 cm(-1), while this peak vanished in healthy serums. The relative intensity of 637 cm(-1) assigned to the gauche conformation of C S increased 23% and the band at 725 cm(-1) corresponding to anti-conformation decreases 60%. These indicate that the structure of the protein has changed in serums from the rash patients. The relative intensity at 1449 cm(-1) assigned to the lipids increased nearly one time...

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia and stroke is its most devasting complication. The rate of ischemic stroke among people with AF is approximately six times that of people without AF and varies importantely with coexistent cardiovascular diseases; therefore stratification of AF patients into those at high and low risk of thromboembolism has become a crucial determinant of optimal antithrombotic prophylaxis. Multivaria-te analyses of prospective studies consistently show prior TIA/stroke, diabetes, age, heart failure to be independently predictive of stroke; left ventricular dysfunction is also strongly associated with stroke risk...
