OBJECTIVES: Secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT) is an important contributor to bone disease and cardiovascular calcifications in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). When conservative measures are ineffective, parathyroidectomy is indicated. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of subtotal parathyroidectomy (sPTX) in pediatric and adolescent patients, and to provide a rationale for considering this aggressive treatment in CKD patients with uncontrolled sHPT...

The technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate (99m Tc-MDP) whole-body bone scan along with single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT/CT) can detect challenging soft tissue uptake patterns. We present a case of a 67-year-old female in whom the 99m Tc-MDP scan, performed 3 hours after injection, revealed abnormal soft tissue uptake in the right thoracic region. No functioning right kidney was seen in the right lumbar region. Hybrid SPECT/CT revealed an ectopic right kidney in the subdiaphragmatic location, accompanied by gut loops and eventration of the right-sided diaphragm...

Thyroid follicular tumours may take up iodide via the sodium-iodide symporter. Knowledge of iodide uptake could then allow treatment with I-131 in dogs with high-risk tumours. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between clinically detectable iodide uptake (as determined by scintigraphy and/or thyroxine concentrations) and sodium iodide symporter immunohistochemical labelling on histologically fixed thyroid tumours. Nineteen dogs were identified who were diagnosed with thyroid carcinoma and underwent surgery from November 2017 to July 2021...

Breast cancer is the most common diagnosed cancer, and the second cause of cancer death among women, worldwide. HER2 overexpression occurred in approximately 15% to 20% of breast cancers. Invasive biopsy method has been used for detection of HER2 overexpression. HER2-targeted imaging via an appropriate radionuclide is a promising method for sensitive and accurate identification of HER2+ primary and metastatic lesions. 99m Tc-anti-HER2 scFv can specifically target malignancies and be used for diagnosis of the cancer type and metastasis as well as treatment of breast cancer...

Multisystem Proteinopathy 1 (MSP1) disease is a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the Valosin-Containing Protein (VCP) gene with clinical features of inclusion body myopathy (IBM), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and Paget's disease of bone (PDB). We performed bone scan imaging in twelve patients (6 females, 6 males) with confirmed VCP gene mutation six (50%) of which has myopathy alone, four (33%) with both PDB and myopathy, and two (15%) were presymptomatic carriers. We aim to characterize the PDB in diagnosed individuals, and potentially identify PDB in the myopathy and presymptomatic groups...

PURPOSE: The current established technique for sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is preoperative injection of 99m technetium-labeled nanosized colloids (99m Tc) followed by single photon emission computed tomography and standard computed tomography (SPECT/CT) with subsequent intraoperative gamma probe-guided excision of the SLN. It is however time and resource consuming, causes radiation exposure and morbidity for the patient as the injection is done in the awake patient. Recently near-infrared imaging with indocyanine green (ICG) gained importance in SLN biopsy as a faster and more convenient technique...

Living donor kidney transplantation plays a vital role in renal replacement therapy, particularly in India, where a substantial increase in kidney transplants has been observed. Thorough assessments of living kidney donors are crucial, focusing on parameters such as kidney size and glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Despite the importance of GFR in donor assessments, there is a noticeable lack of data on normal GFR ranges in the Indian population. This study aims to address the gap in knowledge by establishing a reference range for GFR in healthy kidney donors from the Marathwada region of Maharashtra...

The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) has increased in the recent past. Patients with AKI have an increased risk of mortality. They are also at increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). AKI can lead to irreversible loss of renal function despite complete clinical recovery. Currently, no tools are available to diagnose this subclinical loss of renal function. Renal functional reserve (RFR) can serve as an essential tool for analyzing this subclinical loss of renal function, and patients with loss of RFR post-AKI may be closely followed for the development of CKD...

INTRODUCTION: Primary Thyroid Lymphoma (PTL) is defined as lymphoma involving the thyroid gland alone or the thyroid gland and adjacent neck lymph nodes without contiguous spread or distant metastases at the time of diagnosis. Most thyroid lymphomas are B cell lymphomas, and 98% of all PTL cases are non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is a rare disease accounting for around 5% of the thyroid neoplasms and 2% of extranodal lymphomas. If properly diagnosed and treated, the prognosis is favorable...

The treatment of fungal bone infections and infected non-unions is a huge challenge in modern trauma and orthopedics, which normally contain the local and systemic administration of anti-fungal drugs. Although frequently used, little is known about the impact of systemic and locally administered fungicides on the osteogenic regenerative capabilities of infected bone tissue, especially upon the osteogenesis of human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-hMSCs). This study evaluates the effects of the three most common fungicides for the systemic treatment of bone infections, Voriconazole (VOR), liposomal Amphotericin B (LAMB), and Fluconazole (FLU), as well as the effects of VOR and LAMB-loaded Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) cement chips in different concentrations upon the osteogenic response of BM-hMSCs in vitro...

The main goal of this work was to elucidate the potential relevance of (radio)metal chelates of 99mTc and Re targeting G-quadruplex structures for the design of new tools for cancer theranostics. 99mTc provides the complexes with the ability to perform single-photon-emission computed tomography imaging studies, while the Re complexes should act as anticancer agents upon interaction with specific G4 DNA or RNA structures present in tumor tissues. Towards this goal, we have developed isostructural 99mTc(I) and Re(I) tricarbonyl complexes anchored by a pyrazolyl-diamine (Pz) chelator carrying a pendant pyridostatin (PDS) fragment as the G4-binding motif...

Myocardial perfusion scintigraphy is a popular minimally invasive method for evaluating chronic coronary disease (CCD). We performed myocardial scintigraphy to assess CCD in a 74-year-old man with a history of allergy to contrast media. The patient developed anaphylactic shock immediately after the administration of the technetium (99m Tc)-tetrofosmin preparation. This is the first report of anaphylactic shock due to 99m Tc-tetrofosmin administration during myocardial perfusion scintigraphy.

BACKGROUND: Postsurgical spinal infections are a severe complication and a challenge to the neurosurgeon due to their complex management. Revision surgeries and the removal of hardware are usually necessary. Recently, advances in nuclear medicine have made it possible to employ radiotracers to identify infections. The radiolabeled antimicrobial peptide technetium-99m-ubiquicidin (99mTc-UBI) (29-41) has been demonstrated to detect bacterial infections. UBI 29-41 is a peptide sequence with selective binding to the anionic cell membrane of bacteria, which has recently been used to differentiate between infection and inflammation...
