A decarboxylase (IfPAD) from the ascomycete Isaria farinosa converted ferulic acid to 4-vinylguaiacol (4-VG), a volatile which imparts the distinct "smoke flavor" of pyrolized wood. The activity was enhanced by adding (E)-ferulic acid to the culture medium and peaked with 3.6 U g(-1) mycelium (1 μmol 4-VG min(-1)). The coding sequence of 543 bp was translated into a 25 kDa protein with a homology of 91 % to putative phenolic acid decarboxylases of its teleomorph, Cordyceps militaris, and Beauveria bassiana, the anamorph of Cordyceps bassiana...

Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) containing aristolochic acid (AA) are associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but some prescribed CHMs have been shown to possess renoprotective effects. We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study to delineate the role of prescribed CHMs on the CKD progression. Renoprotective CHM (RPCHM) was defined if a CHM contained dong chong xia cao (Cordyceps sinensis (Berk.) Sacc.), da huang (Rheum palmatum L), huang qi (Astragalus membranaceus), dan shen (Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge...

For more than one thousand years, Cordyceps sinensis has been revered as a unique halidom in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau for its mysterious life history and predominant medicinal values. This mysterious fungus-larva symbiote also attracted the over-exploitation, while several problems on the initial colonization of Ophiocordyceps sinensis in the host larva have constrained artificial cultivation. In this work, stable carbon isotope analysis was employed to analyse the subsamples of C. sinensis from 5 representative habitats...

Bladder cancer is a neoplasm originated from bladder epithelial cells. The therapy for bladder cancer is so far not satisfactory. In this study, we examined the effects of Cordyceps militaris hot water extracts containing cordycepin on human bladder cells. Cordyceps militaris hot water extracts containing cordycepin was used to treat human T24 bladder carcinoma cells, and we found that Cordyceps militaris hot water extracts containing cordycepin decreased T24 cell survival in a dose-dependent manner, which was seemingly mediated by activation of A3 adenosine receptor and the subsequent inactivation of Akt pathways, resulting in increases in cleaved Caspase-3 and apoptosis...

Cordyceps sensu lato is a genus of arthropod-pathogenic fungi, which have been used traditionally as medicinal in Asia. Within the genus, Ophiocordyceps sinensis is the most coveted and expensive species in China. Nevertheless, harvesting wild specimens has become a challenge given that natural populations of the fungus are decreasing and because large-scale culture of it has not yet been achieved. The worldwide demand for products derived from cultivable fungal species with medicinal properties has increased recently...
