BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Turner syndrome (TS) is characterized by short stature, gonadal dysgenesis, and total or partial loss of X chromosome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A historical cohorts study of patients with TS≤18 years old followed up in public hospitals in Castilla y Leon was undertaken. RESULTS: Forty-two female patients were included (prenatal diagnosis 11.9%, neonatal diagnosis 14.3%) with current median age 11.9±4.2 years. Short stature was the reason for consultation in 87...

INTRODUCTION: Since its approval by the European Medicines Agency, a great number of patients born small for gestational date have received recombinant growth hormone treatment in Spain. The aim of this study is to analyse its outcome in the setting of ordinary clinical practice. METHODS: Information was gathered from the registers of the assessment boards that authorise all growth hormone treatments prescribed in public hospitals in six autonomic communities (regions)...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess if ALT levels, as a marker of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, may predict HbA1c response to treatment with GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective, longitudinal, analytical study was conducted including patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus continuously treated with GLP-1 agonists (85% with liraglutide) for one year. Patients were divided into two groups according to baseline ALT levels, with 24 U/L (the median of the distribution) as the cut-off point...

MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients with diabetes with complete data who were started on CSII-rtCGM between February 2010 and May 2014 were included. This is a descriptive analysis of the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. RESULTS: 141 of 174 patients attending the clinic were included...

Thyroid cancer is the leading endocrine system tumor. Great advances have recently been made in understanding of the origin of these tumors and the molecular biology that makes them grow and proliferate, which have been associated to improvements in diagnostic procedures and increased availability of effective local and systemic treatments. All of the above makes thyroid cancer a paradigm of how different specialties should work together to achieve the greatest benefit for the patients. Coordination of all the procedures and patient flows should continue throughout diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, and is essential for further optimization of resources and time...

Incidence of thyroid cancer is increasing in Spain and worldwide. Overall thyroid cancer survival is very high, and stratification systems to reliably identify patients with worse prognosis have been developed. However, marked differences exist between the different specialists in clinical management of low-risk patients with thyroid carcinoma. Almost half of all papillary thyroid carcinomas are microcarcinomas, and 90% are tumors < 2 cm that have a particularly good prognosis. However, they are usually treated more aggressively than needed, despite the lack of adequate scientific support...

UNLABELLED: Sporting activity is becoming a common practice in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). This situation requires both a preliminary medical assessment and a wide range of changes in treatment which have scarcely been addressed in medical literature. OBJECTIVE: To prepare a clinical guideline on the medical approach to patients with diabetes who practice sport regularly. METHODS: An expert panel from the Diabetes Mellitus Working Group of the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition (SEEN) reviewed the most relevant literature in each of the sections...

In Spain, according to the Di@bet.es study, 13.8% of the adult population suffers from diabetes and 14.8% from some form of prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance, impaired fasting glucose or both). Since early detection of prediabetes can facilitate the implementation of therapeutic measures to prevent its progression to diabetes, we believe that preventive strategies in primary care and specialized clinical settings should be agreed. Screening for diabetes and prediabetes using a specific questionnaire (FINDRISC) and/or the measurement of fasting plasma glucose in high risk patients leads to detecting patients at risk of developing diabetes and it is necessary to consider how they should be managed...

A position statement on the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid dysfunction in pregnancy has been agreed on behalf of The Sociedad Andaluza de Endocrinología y Nutrición (SAEN), based on a review of the literature to date and all good clinical practice guidelines. The document is set out in different sections as regards the diagnosis and treatment of, overt and subclinical hypo- and hyperthyroidism, isolated hypothyroxinaemia and postpartum thyroiditis. It also justifies the implementation of universal screening for thyroid dysfunction in pregnancy, and provides practitioners who care for these patients with tool for rational decision making...

Di@bet.es study results are impressive, showing that diabetes affects 13.8% of the Spanish population. Not only the statistical facts are alarming, but the increasing incidence of this disease is a major problem, as pandemic proportions of type 2 diabetes are expected. Thus, the study of diabetes represents a challenge not only for health services, but also for the Ministries of Health and Finance. Technology has become an essential tool in the quality are of patients with diabetes, as it helps in the healthcare processes to obtain an optimum metabolic balance and prevent possible complications...
