INTRODUCTION: In Anesthesia, a medication error would occur every 20 to 133 anesthesia procedures, and 14% is related to a route administration error. To secure neuraxial route, ISO group published a norm in 2016 to develop specific connectors, the "NRFit® connector". The main objective of this work, is to develop a risk mapping related to neuraxial medication errors therefore prepare the NRFit® implementation in Anesthesia units in a French universitary hospital. METHODS: FMECA (Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis) methodology was used for our risk mapping which was divided in 3 anesthesia specialities...

The keeping of chickens in the backyard is growing in popularity in urban and suburban areas, numbers of animals are increasing and as a result small animal practitioners are more and more frequently faced with chickens as patient. Clinical conditions in backyard poultry often require the treatment of pain. The challenges regarding the adequate use of analgesics include: 1. Recognition and assessment of pain, which necessitates good knowledge of chicken behaviour, 2. Selection of the adequate drug and dosage based on evidence that is often not available for chickens, but spread over different species of birds, and 3...

Background: The dearth of adequate facilities and anesthetists limits the number and extent of surgical cases that can be attended to in surgical outreach programs. Inguinal hernia remains a common health burden in the developing world. Tertiary hospitals provide good anesthetic complements to safe surgeries and will be a veritable tool in surgical outreaches. Objectives: The objective of the study is to assess the types/techniques of anesthesia used in uncomplicated open inguinal hernia repair in a tertiary hospital-based surgical outreach program...

There have been concerns about the negative effects of general anaesthesia in elderly hip fracture patients. For full informed consent, data from carefully designed clinical trials with functional outcome measures in older patients are essential. The development and implementation of such knowledge can be improved by using standardized functional outcomes in perioperative research.

PURPOSE: Labour epidural analgesia (LEA) is an evolving field. Various neuraxial techniques and dosing regimens are available to the modern obstetric anesthesia provider, allowing for significant practice variability. To begin a search for consensus on optimal care, we sought to query fellowship training practices for LEA. METHODS: We conducted an electronic survey of institutions with American Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited obstetric anesthesiology fellowship programs...

The incidence of acute pain during caesarean section varies between studies, with a reported rate ranging between 0.5%-17% for spinal anaesthesia and 1.7%-20% for epidural anaesthesia. Leaders from the French Club anesthésie-réanimation en obstétrique (CARO) convened to provide a clinical framework and practice bulletin to prevent, recognise and treat acute pain during caesarean section. First, a steering group agreed on 5 themes guiding quality of anaesthesia care for caesarean section: (1) appropriate neuraxial anaesthesia and testing of the surgical block prior to incision (PREVENTION); (2) appropriate organisation around decision to delivery time (COMMUNICATION); 3) appropriate management of pain before and/or after skin incision (RECOGNITION & RESPONSE); (4) appropriate prevention, identification and management of post-traumatic stress disorder (SCREENING, PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF COMPLICATIONS); (5) management of medico-legal issues (MITIGATION)...

There were examined 47 children, operated on for tumors of abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space. The opioid-induced hyperalgesia may occur in early postoperative period. The anesthesia conduction of m. transverses abdominis (TAP-block), using 0.375% bupivacaine solution and combined spinal epidural analgesia (CSEA) for postoperative anesthesia have promoted the hyperalgesia severity reduction. Hyperalgesia in early postoperative period was demonstrated by upgrading of the toll-like receptors (TLR-4) level in the blood...

BACKGROUND: Spinal anesthesia is an accepted technique in elective cesarean sections. However, hypotension, resulted from sympathectomy is a common problem, especially in pregnant women. Prevention of this complication by sympathomimetic agents is of potential clinical significance. The aim of this study is to compare the effect of prophylactic infusion of Phenylephrine versus Ephedrine in the prevention of hypotension during spinal anesthesia in elective cesarean section. METHODS: Eighty-three patients were enrolled in this study and randomly divided into three groups...

Basing on analysis of the treatment results in 74 injured persons with a cold trauma there was proved, that during operative interventions performance a total intravenous anesthesy and a spinal cord anesthesy are used most frequently. Inhalation anesthesy and conducting methods of anesthesy ought to be used more frequently, because a total intravenous anesthesy is a lesser guided one and a spinal cord anesthesy may cause a severe hypotension in the injured persons.

We described a case of spondylodiscitis L3 L4, in a 3 year old child that appeared 3 weeks after a lumbar puncture. The infectious agent responsible wasn't found. The child recovered without sequelae with an antistaphylococcis treatment. The mecanism by inoculation has been described after surgery of the inter-vertebral disc but also after spinal anesthesis. The bone complications of the lumbar puncture are exceptionally rare but elementary aseptic precautions must not be overlooked in order minimise the infection...

The authors studied 20 patients with vertebral metastases. They injected in these metastases orthopaedic cement by a percutaneous technique under local anesthesis. The results are good for 16 patients, nul for 2 patients and we observed 2 complications. The authors conclude that the best indication is the painy somatic lysis of a vertebra without peri-radicular tumor.
