BACKGROUND/AIMS: The prevalence of hepatitis B is higher in tribal populations, compared to non-tribal populations in India. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the risk factors, virological and biochemical profile of patients with hepatitis B in a tribal population. METHODS: This study analyzed data collected from a community-based project conducted in Spiti, Himachal Pradesh, from July 2015 to 2017. The study included adults and children inhabiting 40 cluster villages out of 82 villages in the subdivision...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Bulevirtide (BLV) was approved for the treatment of compensated chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection in Europe in 2020. However, research into the effects of the entry inhibitor BLV on HDV-host dynamics is in its infancy. METHODS: Eighteen patients with HDV under nucleos(t)ide analogue treatment for hepatitis B, with compensated cirrhosis and clinically significant portal hypertension, received BLV 2 mg/day. HDV RNA, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) were measured at baseline, weeks 4, 8 and every 8 weeks thereafter...

Monkeypox is a zoonotic viral disease caused by a virus of the genus Orthopoxvirus. As of January 1, 2022, it has been reported in 110 WHO Member States. It presents with fever, fatigue, painful lymphadenopathy, and rash. It lasts between 2 and 4 weeks. It is usually self-limited, but severe cases have been described in immunocompromised people. This study describes cases of monkeypox in women, diagnosed between June 2022 and February 2023, and it reports epidemiology, clinical aspects, and complications after infection...

Liver cirrhosis remains a major health concern globally, but its epidemiology and etiology evolve with time. However, the changing pattern in etiology and cause of liver-related mortality for patients with cirrhosis are not fully elucidated. Herein, our aim was to characterize the temporal trend of the etiological spectrum and evaluate the impact of etiology on liver-related death among patients with compensated cirrhosis (CC) in Beijing, China. Clinical profiles of patients with CC discharged between January 2008 and December 2015 were retrieved from the Beijing hospital discharge database...

This study aimed to explore the prevalence and influential factors of IAHBc from routine examination results of inpatients.A total of 61,247 individuals were included in the study, with a median age of 55 years (range: 43-68), and a male-to-female ratio of 0...

UNLABELLED: The roles of preexisting auto-reactive antibodies in immune-related adverse events (irAEs) associated with immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy are not well defined. Here, we analyzed plasma samples longitudinally collected at predefined time points and at the time of irAEs from 58 patients with immunotherapy naïve metastatic non-small cell lung cancer treated on clinical protocol with ipilimumab and nivolumab. We used a proteomic microarray system capable of assaying antibody reactivity for IgG and IgM fractions against 120 antigens for systemically evaluating the correlations between auto-reactive antibodies and certain organ-specific irAEs...

In this study, we intend to characterize the basal core promoter (BCP) and pre-core region (PC) variants and their association with clinical/epidemiological disease patterns in patients infected with genotypes A and D. The study included 116 chronic hepatitis B patients from Espírito Santo State, Southeast Brazil, infected with genotypes A and D. BACKGROUND: Mutations in TP53 gene is considered a main driver of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). While TP53 mutations are the leading cause of p53 dysfunction, their occurrence rates may drop to approximately 10% in cohorts without hepatitis B virus and aflatoxin exposure. This observation suggests that the deactivation of wild-type p53 (p53wt ) may be a critical factor in the majority of HCC cases. However, the mechanism undermining p53wt activity in the liver remains unclear. METHODS: Microarray analysis and luciferase assay were utilized to confirm target associations...

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a substantial public health safety concern drawing considerable attention in China and globally. The detection of HBV serological markers can enable the assessment of HBV infection and replication status in vivo and evaluate the body's protection against HBV. Therefore, this study aims to identify the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of HBV infection in children to prevent and control HBV infection in Wuhan areas. METHODS: We conducted an extensive retrospective cohort analysis of 115,029 individuals aged 0-18 years who underwent HBV serological markers detection for HBV infection in hospital between 2018 and 2021 using Electrochemiluminescence immunoassay...

Liver involvement is commonly seen in various haematological disorders. They present clinically with elevation of liver enzymes and organomegaly, with or without mass lesions. However, liver involvement may be silent in many hematological disorders or there may be specific findings in liver biopsy that can lead to the diagnosis of clinically inapparent hematological disorders. Present review highlights features of hepatic manifestations in various hematological diseases with special emphasis on histopathological findings...

Cirrhosis patients have poor health-related quality of life (HRQoL). To enhance medical care and therapeutic approaches, it is crucial to identify factors that alter HRQoL in patients with cirrhosis. The present study aims to identify the potential factors affecting and promoting HRQoL in patients with liver cirrhosis. Four databases were extensively searched, including PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar. All original articles with liver cirrhosis and factor-altering HRQoL were included. The present study showed that elderly age, female gender, low family income, low body mass index (BMI), presence of anxiety and depression, presence of cirrhosis complications including ascites, hepatic encephalopathy (HE), and abnormal endoscopic findings, high disease severity score, presence of sarcopenia, disturbed sleep pattern, muscle cramps, poor sexual health, and increased levels of bilirubin, prothrombin time, and albumin-bilirubin ratio were the significant factors associated with lower HRQoL scores...

BACKGROUND: The use of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) is a burgeoning method for the treatment of liver cirrhosis. However, the secretory phenotype and regulatory ability of UC-MSCs are easily affected by their microenvironment. Ensuring a specific microenvironment to enhance the UC-MSCs phenotype is a potential strategy for improving their therapeutic efficacy. The aim of this study was to explore therapeutic UC-MSCs phenotypes for improving liver fibrosis. METHODS: RNA-sequencing was used to analyze the response pattern of UC-MSCs after exposure to the serum of cirrhotic patients with HBV...

OBJECTIVE: A hypo-enhancement of the liver in contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), pathologic one-minute hepatic enhancement (pOMHE), was recently observed in 70% of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients with a high-risk profile for veno-occlusive disease (VOD). Whether pOMHE was a pre-clinical sign of VOD or an unspecific feature of liver damage secondary to intensive chemotherapy is unclear. METHODS: To investigate this, we studied CEUS patterns in patients receiving high-dose chemotherapy prior to autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT) or intensive induction therapy (IT) for the treatment of acute leukemia...
