This article compares the success rate of pushed monocanalicular intubation (Masterka) versus probing for the treatment of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) in children older than 18 months. In a non-random comparative study, 90 eyes with CNLDO underwent either Masterka (45 eyes) or probing (45 eyes). All procedures were performed by one oculoplastic surgeon. The tubes were removed 2 months after the operation. Complete resolution was defined as complete absence of clinical signs and symptoms of CNLDO at 6 months after the procedure...

PURPOSE: To measure the submacular choroidal thickness in eyes with idiopathic macular hole (IMH) compared with unaffected fellow eyes and normal control eyes. METHODS: In this single institutional retrospective comparative case-control study, 34 consecutive patients with IMH were included and compared with 30 normal age- and sex-matched eyes that were planned to have cataract surgery. The included eyes were divided into 4 groups: 41 eyes with IMH (A), 23 unaffected fellow eyes (B), 30 normal eyes (C), and 12 vitrectomized IMH eyes (D)...

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary disease of mucous and sweat glands, which affects the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. Herein, we describe a 3-month-old girl with a history of recurrent episodes of urinary tract infections that required hospitalization. She was referred to our center at the age of three months, with massive gastroesophageal variceal bleeding. In physical examination, she had clubbing, hepatosplenomegaly, and mild ascites. Laboratory studies revealed high serum levels of liver enzymes and low level of Albumin...

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of botulinum toxin (Novotox) injection in patients with cerebral palsy (CP) and esotropia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a non-comparative, prospective interventional case series botulinum toxin injection was done in 44 patients with CP and esotropia. A single dose of botulinum toxin was injected in both medial rectus muscles of all patients and was repeated in 12 patients. Angle of deviation within 10 prism diopters (PD) of orthotropia was defined as a successful outcome...

PURPOSE: To report the diagnoses of lesions initially misdiagnosed as ocular melanoma. METHODS: This retrospective study included all new patients who were referred with a presumptive diagnosis of choroidal melanoma to the ocular oncology clinic at Farabi Eye Hospital from January 2009 to December 2012. Each patient underwent a full ocular examination and B-scan ultrasonography by an ocular oncologist. The final diagnosis was made based on a combination of clinical features, fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography, optical coherence tomography, neuroimaging and biopsy when necessary...

AIM: To report the clinical outcomes of utilizing a three-layer flap and graft in reconstruction of the lower lid in one session. METHODS: Seventeen patients with total or near total lower eyelid defect were included. The defects were reconstructed in three layers. Posterior lamella was reconstructed by using tarsoconjunctival free graft from the ipsilateral upper lid and periosteal flap from lateral orbital rim. Mobilization of residual orbicularis muscle provided a rich blood supply; and the anterior lamella was reconstructed by skin flap prepared from upper lid blepharoplasty as a one-pedicular or bipedicular bucket handle flap...

OBJECTIVE: Beta-thalassemia major is an autosomal recessive disease causing severe and hemolytic anemia, which begins about 2-6 months after birth. Iron overload, which arises from recurrent transfusion and ineffective erythropoiesis, can enhance oxidative stress in thalassemic patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum total antioxidant capacity of patients with ß-Thalassemia major. METHODS: Sixty six Iranian patients with β-thalassemia major and 66 age-gender matched controls were evaluated for serum total antioxidant status (TAS), uric acid (UA), bilirubin and albumin...

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary disease, characterized by chronic pulmonary disease, pancreatic insufficiency and abnormal electrolytes in the sweat. In order to evaluate the clinical manifestations and laboratory findings of Iranian children with CF during a 10-year period, 243 CF patients, with a median age of 5 months, were investigated in this study. The most common manifestations were gastrointestinal disorders and respiratory manifestations. Cough was the most common symptom, followed by malnutrition, diarrhea, respiratory distress, and vomiting...

Congenital choledochal cyst is malformation of the biliary ductal system, which rarely occur. We describe here a 4-month old boy, who was referred to our center with respiratory distress and low level consciousness. In physical examination, a mass was detected in right upper quadrant of abdomen. Sonographic examination indicated a cystic structure representing the choledochal cyst. Further evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis in this patient. Although choledochal cyst is considered as a rare disease, it is the most frequent malformation of the extrahepatic biliary ducts, which easily could be misdiagnosed...
