INTRODUCTION: This paper discusses the current medical sonographer status in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The paper explores the current education, skills, job description, and challenges towards developing sonography professions and a sonographer framework. METHODS: The study employed a quantitative descriptive research approach using a cross-sectional study design to collect and analyse data from sonographers in the UAE. Data was collected through a structured survey that included sections addressing demographic information, education, skills, current practices, and challenges...

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of milk duct development in early pregnancy on ultrasound images. METHODS: Automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) images used for breast cancer screening in 332 pregnant women were evaluated retrospectively to determine when and how ductal development becomes evident on ultrasonography. The diagnostic criteria used for mammary gland changes during the gestational period were extension of the ducts to the margins of the breast where little or no echogenic fibroglandular tissue is seen on sonograms and/or the appearance of ductal structures running along the ascending Cooper's ligament tapering off or ending in a blind end at the superficial layer of the superficial fascia...

OBJECTIVE:  There is growing evidence for the usefulness of the lung ultrasound score (LUS) in neonatal intensive care. We evaluated whether the LUS is predictive of outcomes in infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). STUDY DESIGN:  Neonates less than 34 weeks of gestational age were eligible for this prospective, multicenter cohort study. The outcomes of interest were the need for mechanical ventilation (MV) at <72 hours of life, the need for surfactant (SF), successful weaning from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), extubation readiness, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia...

INTRODUCTION: Health-care disparities in rural and underserved areas may be exacerbated by the pandemic, personnel challenges, and supply chain limitations. This study aimed to quantify current variation in rural and urban pediatric renal ultrasound availability. METHODS: We identified all hospitals statewide and contacted radiology departments posing as a parent trying to schedule an appointment for a routine pediatric renal-bladder ultrasound. Intervals between day of contact and first available appointment were compared between rural and urban institutions...

METHODS: Sonograms were performed on a phantom and healthy volunteers. In vitro, pleural line depth, transducer type (5-1 MHz phased array vs. 13-6 MHz linear array), angle of the pleural line relative to the transducer and distance between the pleural line and focal length were explicitly modified...

The paper addresses a crucial challenge in medical radiology and introduces a novel general approach, which utilises applied mathematics and information technology techniques, for aberration correction in ultrasound diagnostics. Ultrasound imaging of inhomogeneous media inherently suffers from variations in ultrasonic speed between tissue. The characteristics of aberrations are unique to each patient due to tissue morphology. This study proposes a new phase aberration correction method based on the Fourier transform and leveraging of the synthetic aperture mode...

INTRODUCTION: the measurement of nuchal translucency is crucial for the assessment risk of aneuploidies in the first trimester. We investigate the ability of nuchal translucency (NT) assessed by a transverse view of the fetal head to detect fetuses at increased risk of common aneuploidies at 11-13 weeks of gestation. METHODS: we enrolled a nonconsecutive series of women who attended our outpatient clinic from January 2020 to April 2021 for aneuploidies screening by means of first trimester combined test...

A flexible ultrasound array can potentially provide a larger field-of-view, enhanced imaging resolution, and less operator dependency compared to conventional rigid transducer arrays. However, such transducer arrays require information about relative element positions for beamforming and reconstructing geometrically accurate sonograms. In this study, we assess the potential utility of using spatial coherence of backscattered radiofrequency data to estimate transducer array shape (inverse problem). The methodology is evaluated through 1) simulation of flexible arrays and 2) blinded in vivo experiments using commercial rigid transducer arrays on various anatomical targets (shoulder, forearm, scapular, posterior calf muscles, and abdomen) and multi-purpose ultrasound phantoms...

INTRODUCTION: Comparison of the neuromuscular performance of different athlete types may give insight into the in-vivo variability of these measures and their underpinning mechanisms. The study aims to compare the neuromuscular function of the plantar flexors of sprinters and physically active individuals to assess any differences in explosive force performance. METHODS: Neuromuscular performance of a group of sprinters (highly trained/national level, n = 12; elite/international level, n = 2) and physically active individuals (n = 14) were assessed during involuntary, explosive, and maximum voluntary isometric plantar flexions, across different muscle-tendon unit (MTU) lengths (10° plantarflexion (PF), 0° (anatomical zero/neutral, AZ), and 10° dorsiflexion (DF))...

When a child with a hip problem is clinically evaluated, it is usually possible to make a presumptive diagnosis which is subsequently confirmed. The most important tool for confirmation in pediatric hip disorders is radiological imaging. Vice versa changes on sonogram, native X‑ray or magnetic resonance images (MRI) can often only be interpreted when the history and current clinical findings are known. In this constellation, it is desirable that all colleagues who are confronted with a child's hip problem know the most common and important pediatric hip disorders and use the same terminology...

BACKGROUND: Heart tumors are rare in dogs. They can be benign or malignant. Clinical signs depend primarily on the location of the tumor and its effect on blood flow. CASE PRESENTATION: An eleven-year-old crossbreed male dog lethargic and anorectic for previous 3 days was presented to the veterinary clinic. The focused ultrasound assessment with sonograms in trauma (FAST) revealed multiple tumors in the heart which were then confirmed in echocardiographic examination performed by a veterinary cardiologist...

OBJECTIVE: Fetal megacystis generally presents as suspected lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO), which is associated with severe perinatal morbidity. Genetic etiologies underlying LUTO or a LUTO-like initial presentation are poorly understood. METHODS: A retrospective case series of suspected fetal LUTO positive for a molecular diagnosis was collected from five centers in the Fetal Sequencing Consortium...

Colonic hamartomatous polyps are clinically benign tumors. Colonic hamartomas are polypoid lesions that are rare in adults and most commonly encountered in infants and children. We report an unusual case of giant colonic hamartomatous polyps that were found incidentally during a medical workup for acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding in a 26-year-old woman. We present the color Doppler ultrasound, computed tomography scan, and endoscopic pattern of colonic hamartomatous polyps.

Thyroiditis should be in the differential for hyperthyroidism when thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is suppressed and T3/T4 levels are elevated. Suspicion of hyperthyroidism is further increased when the patient can exhibit symptoms such as weight loss, anxiety, feeling feverish, tremors, shaking, and sweating. Hyperthyroidism is generally classified as being overt or subclinical. In the following case, the patient had overt hyperthyroidism which is considered more severe than subclinical hyperthyroidism. Coronavirus disease is not typically associated with thyroiditis; however, in this case, the patient's disorder was accidentally found on her blood results which were originally taken due to her coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) diagnosis...
