Secnidazole, a 5-nitroimidazole with a longer half-life, is structurally related to metronidazole and tinidazole. For treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV), secnidazole is a suitable single-dose oral drug having a longer serum half-life than metronidazole. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility of vaginal isolates of facultative and anaerobic bacteria to secnidazole, metronidazole, tinidazole and clindamycin. A total of 605 unique BV-related bacteria and 108 isolates of lactobacilli recovered from the human vagina of US women during the years 2009-2015 were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by the agar dilution CLSI reference method to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC)...

Secnidazole is a long-lasting nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent that is used as racemic mixture in clinical settings. We developed and validated an enantioselective high-performance liquid chromatography method to determine secnidazole enantiomers in rat plasma. Secnidazole enantiomers and S-(-)-ornidazole (internal standard) were extracted from 50 μL of rat plasma using diethyl ether-dichloromethane (3:2, v/v). Baseline resolution (Rs=2.45) was achieved within 7.0 min on a Chiral-AGP column (150 mm × 4...

BACKGROUND: Both giardiasis and zinc deficiency are serious health problems worldwide. In Mexico, the prevalence of G. intestinalis was estimated at 32% in 1994. It remains a health problem in northwestern Mexico. Recent surveys (1987, 1995, and 1999) reported zinc deficiency in the Mexican population. The association of giardiasis and malabsorption of micronutrients has been well documented, although the association with zinc remains controversial. This study investigated the association between giardiasis and zinc deficiency in schoolchildren from northwestern Mexico...
