The paper theoretically investigates the peculiarities of energy diagram of asymmetric graded-band-gap superlattices with linear coordinate dependences of band gap and electron affinity. For calculating the energy diagram of asymmetric graded-band-gap superlattices, linearized Poisson's equation has been solved for the two layers forming a period of the superlattice. The obtained coordinate dependences of edges of the conduction and valence bands demonstrate substantial transformation of the shape of the energy diagram at changing the period of the lattice and the ratio of width of the adjacent layers...

High dielectric materials (HDM) have been proposed in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the images acquired while reducing the radiofrequency (RF) absorption in tissue. The aim of this study is to assess the potential merit of using HDM to reduce power induced at the tip of an endocardial lead in patients undergoing MRI. Numerical simulations were performed using a commercial finite-differences time-domain (FDTD) software to model the RF field generated by a birdcage body coil at 64 MHz on a human body model...

This article describes the fabrication and characterization of a pH sensor for monitoring the wound status. The pH sensitive layer consists of a graphene oxide (GO) layer obtained by drop-casting 5 μΐ of GO dispersion onto the working electrode of a screen-printed substrate. Sensitivity was 31.8 mV/pH with an accuracy of 0.3 unit of pH. Open-circuit potentiometry was carried out to measure pH in an exudate sample. The GO pH sensor proved to be reliable as the comparison with results obtained from a standard glass electrode pH-meter showed negligible differences (<; 0...

A common problem which is faced by the researchers when dealing with arterial carotid imaging data is the registration of the geometrical structures between different imaging modalities or different timesteps. The use of the "Patient Position" DICOM field is not adequate to achieve accurate results due to the fact that the carotid artery is a relatively small structure and even imperceptible changes in patient position and/or direction make it difficult. While there is a wide range of simple/advanced registration techniques in the literature, there is a considerable number of studies which address the geometrical structure of the carotid artery without using any registration technique...

Cardiovascular disease continued to be a leading killer world widely. Each year, about 400,000 cases of sudden cardiac arrest are reported in the U.S. alone. Clinically, radio-frequency ablative procedure has become widely applied in the treatment of ventricular arrhythmia. Non-invasive approaches have been demonstrated to be able to provide important information on the arrhythmogenesis and potentially assist in the clinical practice. In this work, we develop and validate a novel temporal sparse based imaging method, Cardiac Electrical Sparse Imaging (CESI)...

BACKGROUND: Tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TSGCT), also known as giant cell tumor of tendon sheath or pigmented villonodular synovitis, is the most common benign tumor of the tendon and synovium. The intra-articular diffuse type can present as a large infiltrative mass involving adjacent soft tissue and sometimes causes secondary destruction of bone, which leads to radiographic and clinical concern for malignancy. The tumor may also be purely extra-articular. CASE: Here, we report the fine needle aspiration cytology findings of 2 cases of diffuse-type TSGCT with large mononuclear cells with eccentric nuclei, finely granular cytoplasm, and a peripheral well-defined cytoplasmic rim of hemosiderin ("ladybird cells")...

Postsurgical deep brain venous thrombosis has not been well described in children before. When approaching thalamic or intraventricular lesions, extra care should be taken to prevent injury to the internal cerebral veins (ICVs) and the vein of Galen. However, even when they are well preserved during surgery, postoperative hemodynamic changes, mainly in the first 24 h, or surgical manipulation can cause thrombosis of these veins. We report 2 children with unilateral postoperative ICV thrombosis; in 1 of the patients the vein of Galen was also thrombosed...

The rapid development of time-series data mining provides an emerging method for water resource management research. In this paper, based on the time-series data mining methodology, we propose a novel and general analysis framework for water quality time-series data. It consists of two parts: implementation components and common tasks of time-series data mining in water quality data. In the first part, we propose to granulate the time series into several two-dimensional normal clouds and calculate the similarities in the granulated level...

DNA is a powerful tool available for forensic investigations requiring identification of species. However, it is necessary to develop and validate methods able to produce results in degraded and or low quality DNA samples with the high standards obligatory in forensic research. Here, we describe a voluntary collaborative exercise to test the recently developed Species Identification by Insertions/Deletions (SPInDel) method. The SPInDel kit allows the identification of species by the generation of numeric profiles combining the lengths of six mitochondrial ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene regions amplified in a single reaction followed by capillary electrophoresis...

We used whole exome sequencing to determine the genetic background of CVID in two non-consanguineous German families. We identified IFNK (interferon-kappa) as the only candidate gene that harbored truncating mutations in affected members from both families. One family segregated c.30_31insTGTT, a known frameshift variant, while the other family segregated the novel IFNK mutation p.K199X that creates a premature stop codon. We sequenced the whole coding region of IFNK in a further series of 167 CVID patients and 192 healthy controls...

INTRODUCTION: Schwannomas of the descending loop of the hypoglossal nerve are very rare. They are slow-growing tumors that may masquerade a carotid body tumor. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 60-year-old female was referred for a latero-cervical mass appearing as a chemodectoma at CT-scan. At operation, a 2cm mass arising from the descending loop of the hypoglossal nerve was resected en bloc with the loop itself and a functional lymphadenectomy was associated. Post-operative course was uneventful and the patient is free from disease recurrence at one year follow-up...
