Richter syndrome (RS) describes a phenomenon in which a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) develops an aggressive lymphoma, most commonly diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Reports of cutaneous RS remain exceedingly rare. We report a 61-year-old woman with relapsed/refractory CLL presenting with several subcutaneous nodules on her arms and legs and a single dermal plaque on her abdomen. Skin biopsy revealed a diagnosis of DLBCL, ABC-type, and her clinical status rapidly deteriorated following diagnosis...

A novel bacterial symbiont, strain A19T , was previously isolated from a root-nodule of Aeschynomene indica and assigned to a new lineage in the photosynthetic clade of the genus Bradyrhizobium. Here data are presented for the detailed genomic and taxonomic analyses of novel strain A19T . Emphasis is placed on the analysis of genes of practical or ecological significance (photosynthesis, nitrous oxide reductase and nitrogen fixation genes). Phylogenomic analysis of whole genome sequences as well as 50 single-copy core gene sequences placed A19T in a highly supported lineage distinct from described Bradyrhizobium species with B...

One of the key challenges in diagnosing thyroid cancer lies in the substantial percentage of indeterminate diagnoses of thyroid nodules that have undergone ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy for cytological evaluation. This delays the definitive diagnosis and treatment plans. We recently demonstrated that hydroxyapatite microcalcifications (MCs) aspirated from thyroid nodules may aid nodule diagnosis based on their composition. In particular, Zn-enriched MCs have emerged as potential cancer biomarkers...

INTRODUCTION: The latest World Health Organization (WHO) classification from 2022 distinguishes the division of low-risk thyroid neoplasms such as non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP), follicular tumour of uncertain malignant potential (FT-UMP), and well-differentiated tumour of uncertain malignant potential (WDT-UMP). The final diagnosis is made postoperatively according to histopathologic results. The aim of the study was the assessment of ultrasonographic and cytopathological features of borderline lesions to predict low-risk tumours preoperatively and plan the optimal treatment for that group of patients...

Malignant syphilis (MS) is a rare variant of secondary syphilis. Also known as rupioid syphilis, MS is characterized by the presence of multiple papules, papulopustules, black lamellate crust that may resemble an oyster shell, or nodules with ulceration lacking central clearing. MS is often associated with immunodeficiency and frequently co-occurs with HIV infection. We here report a case of MS in a patient with HIV infection. HIV infection can cause atypical clinical symptoms of syphilis. In this case, unlike previous cases, cutaneous lesions of MS were limited to the face, making the diagnosis challenging based on clinical findings alone...

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women globally, often leading to distant metastasis in the lung, liver, or bones. Cutaneous metastasis represents an uncommon pattern in breast cancer, but when observed, it tends to manifest in the thorax and upper abdomen, primarily due to lymph node involvement. Therefore, occurrences of cutaneous metastasis on the scalp and extremities are infrequent. Moreover, invasive lobular carcinoma metastasizing to remote skin is rare among the breast cancer. This report presents a case of cutaneous metastasis of invasive lobular carcinoma to the scalp in a patient treated for breast cancer six years ago, with no signs of local recurrence or metastasis to other organs...

Cyclops lesions are characterized as fibroid nodules with granulation tissue that looks similar to a cyclops eye during arthroscopy. These are rare postoperative complications following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), presenting typically within six months of their reconstruction. This case report presents a 21-year-old male, three years following hamstring autograft ACLR, with a symptomatic cyclops lesion. Contrary to the reported literature, this delayed presentation showed a painful flexion contracture of the knee and intraoperative findings consistent with a cyclops lesion...

Thyroid nodules (TNs) are pathological changes characterized by abnormal proliferation of thyroid gland tissue. Approximately 19% to 67% of asymptomatic individuals are diagnosed with TNs, with the majority being benign nodules and 4% to 6.5% being thyroid cancer nodules. Western medicine recommends regular examinations and surgery, while traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) provides an alternative choice to maintain thyroid function and reduce the need for surgery. However, in Taiwan, research on TCM treatment for benign TNs is primarily limited to case reports, lacking large-scale and systematic clinical studies...

The differential diagnosis between renal arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and cancer may be a challenge, due to the similar clinical and imaging findings. Herein, we report the case of an 80-year-old male patient presenting gross hematuria, initially diagnosed and treated with embolization for a renal AVM. Due to the recurrence of hematuria and rapid progression and changes of the vascular lesion with detection also of an intralesional solid nodule, a radical nephrectomy was performed revealing the presence of a renal cell carcinoma (RCC)...

UNLABELLED: Acinetobacter baumannii is associated with multidrug resistant (MDR) infections in healthcare settings, with fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin being currently ineffective. Clinical isolates largely harbor mutations in the GyrA and TopoIV fluoroquinolone targets, as well as mutations that increase expression of drug resistance-nodulation-division (RND) efflux pumps. Factors critical for maintaining fitness levels of pump overproducers are uncharacterized despite their prevalence in clinical isolates...
