INTRODUCTION: The relationship of the metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components with the reduced glomerular filtration rate and proteinuria is not yet widely elucidated. The aim of the study was to associate the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and proteinuria to MS and its individual components in adults with cardiometabolic risk factors, who attended a public health center in the municipality of San Diego, Carabobo State, Venezuela. METHODS: Descriptive and cross-sectional study (n=176 individuals)...

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease accounts for part of overall health expenditure; a potential etiology is related to variations, absence or presence of some human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles. Method: An analysis of HLA reports of 1965 kidney recipients with no determined etiology, and 1361 kidney donors was performed. It was carried out with Luminex based in cell flow fluorometry for the A, B, DRB1 and DQA loci. An analysis was performed with contingency tables in order to determine the odds ratio (OR) and confidence intervals (CI)...

Background: there are multiple factors that increase the presence of dyslipidemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Objective: to determine if the android/gynecoid ratio (A/GR) has utility as a cardiometabolic factor for dyslipidemia in pediatric patients with chronic renal failure. Materials and methods: cohort study. Patients with terminal CKD in peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis were included. Determinations of body composition, body mass index (BMI), and lipid profile were assessed for each patient. Subsequently, somatometry and lipid profile were performed at 6 and 12 months of follow-up...

Primary Sjögren's syndrome is a systemic and chronic autoimmune disease. Renal involvement may occur in up to 30% of patients. The incidence of tubulopathies ranges from 2.6 to 33%. They are manifested by defects in the urine concentration and hydroelectrolyte alterations, mainly distal tubular acidosis and exceptionally proximal tubular acidosis. These disorders can be associated with nephrocalcinosis and renal lithiasis. We report the case of a patient with primary Sjögren who presented proximal renal tubular acidosis associated with recurrent renal colic due to renal lithiasis and nephrocalcinosis...

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is a rare genodermatosis characterized by abnormalities in the anchoring fibrils which attach the basal cell layer of the epidermis to the underlying structures. A characteristic feature of this disorder is the presence of recurrent blistering or erosions, the result of even minor traction to these tissues. Patients with RDEB frequently develop chronic renal failure, and require renal replacement therapy being a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The role of renal transplantation in these patients is scarcely known...

Objective: to relate the morbidities of patients belonging to the COPD program of a health institution in Anserma, Caldas (Colombia). Material and Methods: a descriptive study was presented with a sample of 51 patients who underwent exploratory spirometry, the findings were contrasted with the main commodities reported by the patients or the Medical Record through descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: 50% of the evaluated population had at least one recorded comorbidity; the main morbidity found was Arterial Hypertension followed by Chronic Kidney Disease; an associated behavior was found between the GOLD classification and the presence of symptoms with non-statistically significant values; no statistically significant association was found between comorbidities and spirometric values...

The prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in diabetes through diet and lifestyle have been a topic of much interest over the years. Consideration of the type and amount of carbohydrate, protein and fat is required for optimal blood glucose control, for clinical outcomes related to renal function and for consideration of risk reduction for cardiovascular disease. Depending on the CKD stage different dietary changes should be considered protein-calorie malnutrition is common in chronic kidney disease patients and is a powerful predictor of morbidity and mortality...

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are highly prevalent chronic diseases that represent a significant public health problem and require multidisciplinary management. T2DM is the main cause of CKD in our setting and it is also a major comorbidity of non-diabetic nephropathy. Patients with diabetes and renal failure represent a special risk group as they have higher morbidity and mortality and are at a higher risk of hypoglycaemia than diabetic individuals with normal renal function...
