PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of orbital vector and other biometric parameters (i.e. axial globe length, axial globe projection) on the development of involutional entropion or ectropion. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 167 eyes from 132 patients were included. Of these eyes, 128 had involutional entropion and 39 had involutional ectropion, all of lower lids. The axial globe projection was measured using Hertel exophthalmometry; axial globe length was assessed by A-mode ultrasound; and orbital vector was determined clinically...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the different factors that an oculoplastic surgeon should consider while practicing cosmetic or reconstructive eyebrow surgery in order to have the final patient's satisfaction. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In an observational case series study, five photographs were taken from each of 60 females to show ideal eyebrow positioning with fingers. Eyebrow landmarks, including tarsal plate show (TPS) and eyebrow height, were measured in the ideal position...

PURPOSE: To introduce a new modification of transposition flap technique for reconstruction of the medial canthal region. METHODS: This prospective study included 58 patients with the full thickness involvement of both upper and lower lid in the medial canthal area. Reconstruction of posterior lamella was performed by utilizing periosteal flaps and tarsoconjunctival grafts, and anterior lamellar reconstruction was performed using transposition of multiple full-thickness skin flaps, a modified form of rhomboid flap technique...

AIM: To investigate the clinical outcomes of different intubation techniques in the cases of failed primary probing. METHODS: This retrospective study was performed on 338 patients with the diagnosis of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction with age 1-4y that had failed primary probing. Intubation was performed under light sedation in operating room and the stent was left 3mo in place. Clinical outcome was investigated 3mo after tube removal. RESULTS: Bicanalicular intubation method had higher complete and relative success rates compared to monocanalicular intubation (P=0...

PURPOSE: To compare the ophthalmic parameters and the severity of keratoconus (KC) in pediatrics and adults at the time of initial diagnosis in an Iranian population. METHODS: KC was diagnosed via slit-lamp examination and Pentacam imaging. In a retrospective observational study, consecutive patients were divided into two groups of pediatrics (<18 years old) and adults (>18 years old). Topographic, keratometric, and tomographic parameters, and severity of KC at the time of diagnosis were compared in both groups...

PURPOSE: We present spontaneous retrobulbar hemorrhage in a 52-year-old woman with history of breast cancer and tamoxifen intake which was first thought to be an orbital metastasis. CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old woman with history of breast cancer and tamoxifen intake was referred due to severe proptosis and visual loss. Orbital imaging showed an intra-conal mass. After exploration, multiple fragments of dark brown mass in the retrobulbar area were excised. Microscopic diagnosis was blood clot...

PURPOSE: The high prevalence of positive family history of keratoconus (KC) in KC patients is well-known. However, the results regarding the association between family history of KC and disease severity are controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible association between family history and severity of KC. METHOD: Clinical data of 1496 KC patients were evaluated. All participants were asked if they had had a family member with KC. Topographic and keratometric measurements of KC patients, including central corneal thickness (CCT), thinnest corneal thickness (TCT), mean, flat, and steep keratometry values (K) by the use of Pentacam, best-spectacle corrected visual acuity (BCVA), spherical equivalent (SE), and astigmatism were recorded and compared according to patients with and without a family history of KC, first- or second-degree family members, and the number of family members with KC...

The process of formation of Marx line is studied in this article. Various theories have been proposed previously, in order to explain the mechanisms which lead to the development of Marx line. These theories are based on the characteristics of stained area and do not pay attention to the behavior of dye solution itself on the surface. The aim of this study is to investigate the latter behavior and introduce a new theory based on it, in order to explain the process of the Marx line formation. This study also introduces "Coffee Ring Effect" and its possible applications in explaining some ophthalmological phenomena...

METHODS: In a prospective age- and sex-matched case--control study clinical data of 885 KC patients and 1526 controls were evaluated regarding the presence of various allergic diseases. Severity of KC and ophthalmic parameters of KC patients were compared between KC patients with and without allergic diseases. RESULTS: The prevalence of allergic diseases was significantly higher in KC patients...

The orbital hydatid cyst is a rare entity and although most of them are located in superolateral and superomedial angles of orbits, involvement of inferior sites is uncommon. We report a 12-year-old case of primary hydatid cyst situated in inferior rectus muscle which was undergone surgical removal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used for differential diagnosis of hydatid cyst. Moreover, histological analysis was performed, after the cyst removal, to confirm the diagnosis. Early clinical and radiological evaluations and subsequent surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment and should be performed to prevent severe complications caused by the advanced and ruptured cysts...

Ocular lipodermoid cysts and solid dermoid tumors are choristomas which are described as normal tissue growth in an abnormal location. Congenital epibulbar lipodermoid comprises adipose tissue that is covered by connective tissue. They are usually located superotemporally, and basically tend not to involve the peripheral cornea. If the dermoid or lipodermoid is accompanied by other systemic conditions or ocular anomalies in young children, a consultation with an Internist or pediatrician is required to rule out Goldenhar syndrome which is a oculoauriculovertebral dysplasia...

AIM: The purpose of this study was to determine the association between prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in patients with keratoconus (KC) and the severity of KC. METHODS: Six-hundred and sixteen patients with KC and 616 patients without KC in the control group were enrolled in this prospective case-control study. Both groups were matched by age, gender, and body mass index (BMI). The Berlin Questionnaire was administered in both groups. Keratometric and topographic measurements of the KC eyes were recorded...

METHODS: A total of 121 patients, 71 males (58.7%) and 50 females (41.3%) (214 eyes) with the diagnosis of keratoconus (KC) were enrolled in this study. Following diagnosis of KC by slit-lamp biomicroscopic examination, central corneal thickness (CCT), thinnest corneal thickness (TCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and pupil diameter (PD) were measured by a single examiner using successive instrumentation by Pentacam and Orbscan...

BACKGROUND: The management of retinoblastoma remains a challenge to the multidisciplinary team, particularly as treatment affects not only visual outcomes, but also ocular retention and morbidity. Management of retinoblastoma has evolved over the past two decades. OBJECTIVES: To report the result of intra-ophthalmic artery chemotherapy (IAC) for the treatment of refractory and advanced retinoblastoma tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients who had failed to respond adequately to previous treatments and six naive patients with advanced retinoblastoma, receiving IAC between 2009 and 2012, were included in this institutional interventional case series...
