PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of oral azithromycin in the treatment of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis. METHODS: A randomized interventional comparative study was conducted on 14 patients with ocular toxoplasmosis who were treated with oral azithromycin and 13 patients who were treated with oral trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole for 6-12 weeks. The achievement of treatment criteria in the two groups and lesion size reduction were considered as primary outcome measures...

Exfoliation syndrome (XFS) is the most common known risk factor for secondary glaucoma and a major cause of blindness worldwide. Variants in two genes, LOXL1 and CACNA1A, have previously been associated with XFS. To further elucidate the genetic basis of XFS, we collected a global sample of XFS cases to refine the association at LOXL1, which previously showed inconsistent results across populations, and to identify new variants associated with XFS. We identified a rare protective allele at LOXL1 (p.Phe407, odds ratio (OR) = 25, P = 2...

BACKGROUND: To extract utility values of diabetic retinopathy on a perfect health and perfect vision scales for Iranians with both types diabetes. METHODS: In this investigation, 150 untreated patients with diabetic retinopathy consecutively were examined and interviewed in Farabi Eye Hospital, Tehran, Iran, a tertiary referral center in the Iranian health care system. Utility values based on patients-reported outcome measures, standard gamble, time trade off and visual analogue scale approaches, were estimated...

Essentials Perioperative bleeding during prostate surgery is still a common morbidity. Anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications contribute to the risk of hemorrhage and prolonged hospital stay. Multiple pharmacological agents have been proposed, but none of them have been widely accepted. It is crucial to find a safe and effective modality to reduce hemorrhage. SUMMARY: Background Hemorrhage during transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) has always been a concern. Several studies have shown preoperative administration of fibrinogen concentrate to have promising results in reducing hemorrhage in cardiac surgery...

PURPOSE: To report a case of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in an immunocompetent adult patient. METHODS: A 61-year-old woman with proven CMV retinitis and no evidence of HIV or other underlying immunodeficiencies was referred. RESULTS: She was referred with history of recent right eye visual loss. In fundus examination, she had signs of retinal vasculitis. After initial examination, she was found to have CMV retinitis documented by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of vitreous sample...

METHODS: In this prospective non-comparative case series forty four naïve patients with neovascular AMD were genotyped using sequencing or Sequenom iPLEX technology. Descriptive tests were used for displaying the magnitude of each allele, gender distribution, and age at diagnosis...

A 23-year-old girl presented with blurred vision in her left eye since 2 months ago. Her past medical history was unremarkable. On presentation, her left best corrected visual acuity was 20/80. Anterior segment exam was unremarkable. Posterior segment exam showed an ill-defined green gray elevation in the fovea with surrounding subretinal fluid. The right eye exam was normal. Fluorescein Angiography and Optic Coherence Tomography of the left eye was compatible with Choroidal Neovascularization (CNV).

Millions of patients are either slowly losing their vision or are already blind due to retinal degenerative diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or because of accidents or injuries. Employment of artificial means to treat extreme vision impairment has come closer to reality during the past few decades. Currently, many research groups work towards effective solutions to restore a rudimentary sense of vision to the blind. Aside from the efforts being put on replacing damaged parts of the retina by engineered living tissues or microfabricated photoreceptor arrays, implantable electronic microsystems, referred to as visual prostheses, are also sought as promising solutions to restore vision...

PURPOSE: To compare the outcomes of photodynamic therapy (PDT) combined with intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) with versus without intravitreal triamcinolone (IVT) in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS: Eighty-four eyes with active CNV secondary to AMD with no prior treatment were enrolled and followed for 1-year. Eligible eyes were randomly assigned to either PDT/IVB or PDT/IVB/IVT. The main outcome measure was change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA)...

The loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in majority of retinal degenerative diseases is the first seen pathological event. A lot of studies aim to discover suitable cell sources to replace lost and damaged RGCs. Among them dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) have a great potential of differentiating into neuronal lineages as well as RGCs. Moreover, three-dimensional (3D) networks and its distribution for growing and differentiation of stem cells as much as possible mimic to native tissue holds great potential in retinal tissue engineering...

BACKGROUND: Although Visual impairment (VI) and its prevention is a public health issue, sub-optimal information about its magnitude in national level and its distribution is one of the impediments for visual health advocacy. In this article, we are detailing the approaches which will be taken to estimate the magnitude (prevalence, incidence, and burden), distribution, and trend (1990 to 2013) of low vision and blindness in Iran. Besides that, an attempt will be made to describe inequalities and their determinants...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pain at the surgery site is a common complaint in patients who experience percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). The aim of this double-blind, randomized clinical trial is evaluation of the effect of scheduled infusion of bupivacaine on postsurgical pain and narcotic consumption after tubeless PCNL under spinal anesthesia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty patients were randomly divided into two groups. A small caliber fenestrated feeding tube was placed into the nephrostomy tract under direct vision in a manner in which its tip lied close to the renal capsule...

We present our experience with clipless laparoscopic adrenalectomy in pediatric cases for the first time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2007 to January 2011, thirteen laparoscopic adrenalectomy were performed in patients 5-18 years old. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2012 through July 2012, fifty patients underwent minilaparoscopic live donor nephrectomy. Two 3.5 mm trocars were inserted above and lateral to the umbilicus for grasping and scissoring.
