Purpose: To describe the efficacy of intravitreal bevacizumab for the treatment of type 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in zone I. Methods: Preterm infants with type 1 ROP in zone I (zone I ROP, any stage with plus disease or zone I ROP, stage 3 without plus disease) were enrolled in this prospective study. Intravitreal bevacizumab (0.625 mg/0.025 ml) was injected under topical anesthesia. Patients were followed weekly for 4 weeks and then biweekly till 90 weeks gestational age...

PURPOSE: To determine whether a low dose (0.25 mg/0.01 mL) of intravitreal bevacizumab is effective in the treatment of type 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). METHODS: This prospective, noncomparative, interventional case series included all consecutive infants who received 0.25 mg/0.01 mL of intravitreal bevacizumab for type 1 ROP. Infants were followed for ROP persistence/recurrence until 90 weeks' postmenstrual age. RESULTS: A total of 49 eyes of 25 infants (24 bilateral and 1 unilateral) underwent intravitreal injection of a reduced dose (0...

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of an internet-based versus traditional referral system for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening in Iran. METHODS: Two referral screening systems were compared in this prospective observational study. Group A (internet-based) comprised premature babies who were registered into an online system for screening. Their appointments were scheduled automatically based on standardized criteria. Group B (conventional) comprised premature babies whose referrals were based on oral or written recommendations...

OBJECTIVE: To test the applicability of existing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) guidelines on Iranian patients and to develop novel ROP screening criteria in Iran. METHODS: Both eyes of 1932 infants born ≤37 weeks of gestation and/or weighting ≤3000 g were included in this prospective cohort study that was conducted across nine neonatal intensive care units and a tertiary eye hospital ROP clinic. The patients were examined for ROP and the need for treatment (type 1 ROP or worse)...

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of intravitreal bevacizumab for Type 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in zone II ROP. METHODS: We conducted a randomized clinical trial. Preterm infants with a gestational age less than 34 weeks or birthweight less than 2000 g were examined at 4 weeks chronological age or 31 weeks postmenstrual age (whichever was later). Preterm infants with Zone-II/Stage 2 or 3 and plus disease were included. Eligible infants were randomized to receive either conventional indirect laser therapy or intravitreal bevacizumab injections (0...

This manuscript focuses on high-risk factors of metastatic disease in retinoblastoma and evaluation of the current treatments of retinoblastoma. Presence of histopathologic high-risk factors is associated with a higher risk of local recurrence and systemic metastasis. Currently, globe-sparing therapies, including systemic chemotherapy, intra-arterial chemoreduction, intravitreal chemotherapy, focal consolidation, and combination therapies, are being used and investigated actively. Major advances are being made in the diagnosis and management of retinoblastoma that will lead to improved morbidity and mortality rates in patients with retinoblastoma...

The clinical presentation and management of two patients who presented with acute bilateral endophthalmitis following bilateral intravitreal bevacizumab injection. Both cases were diagnosed clinically and subsequent to a vitreous sample, intravitreal ceftazidime (2.25 mg/0.1 ml) and vancomycin (1 mg/0.1 ml) were injected. One patient had a significant improvement in signs and symptoms after intravitreal antibiotics. However, there were was no improvement in the other patient and pars plana vitrectomy was performed bilaterally...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the resistance or susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the most common pathogen in contact lens keratitis and corneal ulcer, to different antibiotic regimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included all patients with recently diagnosed contact lens corneal ulcer whose culture results were positive for P. aeruginosa, from March 2009 to March 2010. The empirical antibiotic therapy was changed to appropriate antibiotics according to the culture results, provided that satisfactory clinical improvement was not achieved with the initial antibiotic regimen...

PURPOSE: To describe the course and outcome in 3 patients with recalcitrant fungal keratitis treated with intrastromal voriconazole injection and topical voriconazole application. METHODS: The present study was an interventional case series. A 50 μg/0.1 mL solution of voriconazole was injected into the corneal stromal tissue around the corneal ulcer, and 1% topical voriconazole was added to the therapeutic regimen if the ulcer failed to respond to 5% topical natamycin hourly and oral ketoconazole twice per day...

PURPOSE: To report a case of varicella endotheliitis. METHODS: An 18-year-old patient with varicella presented with photophobia and reduced vision in his left eye because of disciform corneal endotheliitis. RESULTS: Ocular symptoms and signs resolved completely except for small sectoral iris atrophy with combined antiviral and corticosteroid therapy. CONCLUSIONS: We report a rare presentation of varicella.
