OBJECTIVES: The present study investigated the relationship between bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and intra-amniotic infection with Ureaplasma species. METHODS: This was a single-center, retrospective cohort study. Patients with singleton pregnancies who underwent inpatient management at our department for preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), preterm labor, cervical insufficiency, and asymptomatic cervical shortening at 22-33 gestational weeks were included...

Nearly 70% of preterm deliveries occur spontaneously, and the clinical pathways involved include preterm labor (PTL) and preterm premature rupture of membranes (pPROM). Prediction of preterm delivery is considered crucial due to the significant effects of preterm birth on health and the economy at both the personal and community levels. Although similar inflammatory processes occur in both term and preterm delivery, the premature activation of these processes or exaggerated inflammatory response triggered by infection or sterile factors leads to preterm delivery...

INTRODUCTION: Almost 80% of urinary tract infections during pregnancy are caused by uropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli. Alpha-hemolysin, toxin secreted by them, has a fundamental role in this pathology development. Considering that urinary tract infections are related with premature rupture of fetal membranes, we proposed to evaluate the effects that alpha-hemolysin induces on human-fetal-membranes. METHODS: Thirteen fetal membranes obtained from elective cesarean sections (>37 weeks) were mounted in a transwell-device generating two independent chambers...

BACKGROUND Infectious keratitis after pterygium surgery is a rare but potentially devastating complication. The present study presents 5 cases of herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) after pterygium surgery. CASE REPORT This study was conducted in our clinic in a 5-year period from February 2017 to September 2021. The 5 patients were men, aged between 42 and 73 years, with no prior history of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. Symptoms appeared near 1 month (median 30 days, range 10 to 70 days) after primary pterygium surgery...

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 is associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and fatal pneumonia. Excessive inflammation caused by SARS-CoV-2 is the key driver of ARDS and lethal disease. Several FDA-approved drugs that suppress virus replication are in clinical use. However, despite strong evidence for the role of virus-induced inflammation in severe COVID-19, no effective anti-inflammatory drug is available to control fatal inflammation as well as efficiently clear the virus...

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the leading cause of congenital infection worldwide and the most common cause of non-genetic sensorineural hearing loss. As there is no vaccine or other specific intervention to prevent congenital CMV infection, there is a need to identify maternal and congenital infections with sensitive and specific testing as early as possible. There is no widely accepted practice for screening during pregnancy or in all newborns for identification of possible cases of congenital CMV. Currently, screening during pregnancy is limited to those identified as at risk followed by fetal and/or neonatal testing when congenital infection is suspected...

Objective: To investigate the feasibility of expectant management of different degrees of vaginal fluid in pregnant women with premature rupture of membranes in the second trimester. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to collect 103 pregnant women who were diagnosed with premature rupture of membranes in the second trimester of pregnancy and insisted on continuing the pregnancy in Shanxi Bethune Hospital from July 2012 to July 2022. According to the degree of vaginal fluid, pregnant women were divided into rupture group (with typical vaginal fluid, 48 cases) and leakage group (without typical vaginal fluid, 55 cases)...

Intra-amniotic infection with Candida species is an uncommon but severe condition with high fetal morbimortality and no established clinical guidelines for its management. We report a Candida albicans intra-amniotic infection diagnosed in a 25-week pregnant woman, successfully treated with high-dose liposomal amphotericin B. Pregnancy was prolonged until 30 weeks, and despite persistently positive Candida cultures in amniotic fluid, a healthy newborn was delivered without evidence of systemic infection. Amphotericin concentration was determined at birth, revealing levels over 30 times higher in mother's and cord blood than in the amniotic fluid, probably explaining the clinical protection despite failure in obtaining fungal clearance...

Introduction Fetal ventriculomegaly is one of the most commonly diagnosed central nervous system (CNS) pathologies of the second trimester occurring with a frequency of 0.3-0.5/1000 births. Severe fetal ventriculomegaly (SVM) may necessitate intrauterine intervention. Most such interventions have been made percutaneously with ultrasound guidance insertion of a pigtail catheter, which sadly often became obstructed or migrated. Case presentation Our case report presents the possibility of ventriculo-amniotic valve implantation (VAVI) by classic hysterotomy in isolated severe fetal hydrocephalus (IVSM) due to aqueductal stenosis...

PURPOSE: To discuss the prevention and treatment of persistent epithelial defects after the most common refractive surgeries-photorefractive keratectomy, laser in situ keratomileusis, or small incision lenticule extraction. METHODS: PubMed was used to search the medical literature. RESULTS: Persistent epithelial defects are infrequent after photorefractive keratectomy, laser in situ keratomileusis, or small incision lenticule extraction. In the authors' opinion, any persistent epithelial defect present at 1 week or beyond after surgery should be treated aggressively with a properly fit bandage contact lens, lubrication with non-preserved artificial tears, and treatment of any eyelid abnormalities, including nocturnal lagophthalmos...

Nanofilm biomaterials have emerged as promising interfaces between materials and biology, offering potential for various biomedical applications. To explore this potential, our study aimed to assess the wound healing efficacy of amniotic fluid and Moringa olifera -loaded nanoclay films by using in vivo models. Intrauterine infection is a significant cause of preterm labor and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Ureaplasma parvum is the microorganism most commonly isolated from cases of preterm birth and preterm premature rupture of membranes (pPROM). However, the mechanisms during the early stages of ascending reproductive tract infection remain poorly understood. To examine inflammation in fetal (chorioamnionic) membranes in response to U. parvum infection, we utilized a non-human primate (NHP) model of choriodecidual infection...

BACKGROUND: Preterm delivery is associated with cardiovascular remodeling and dysfunction in children and adults. However, it is unknown whether these effects are caused by the neonatal consequences of preterm birth or if these are already present in utero. Postoperative wound infections (PWIs), a subtype of surgical site infections, are a significant concern for patients undergoing caesarean sections (C-sections). Understanding risk factors and pathogen profiles can greatly assist in early diagnosis and effective treatment. This study aimed to identify risk factors and analyse the pathogenic landscape contributing to PWIs in C-sections. A nested case-control study was carried out, utilising stringent criteria for case selection and control matching. Accidental hypothermia in mature neonates requiring hospitalization is a clinical complication that has not been studied in detail. In the present study, the effect of accidental hypothermia on common morbidity in neonates in the postnatal period was investigated. We did temperature measurements in 616 mature neonates after birth, after transfer to the maternity ward and at check-up at age of 48-72 hours of life. Additionally, nurses checked temperature until discharge at every diaper change in 302 of all included neonates who were small for gestational age (SGA) or whose mothers had green fluid or premature rupture of membranes (PROM)...
