PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between ocular biometric parameters and sulcus-to-sulcus (STS) diameter. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of preoperative ocular biometry data of patients who were candidates for phakic intraocular lens (IOL) surgery. Subjects underwent ocular biometry analysis, including refraction error evaluation using an autorefractor and Orbscan topography for white-to-white (WTW) corneal diameter and measurement...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of non-keratometric ocular astigmatisms on visual and refractive outcomes after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for correction of myopic astigmatisms. METHODS: Seventy one eyes of 36 subjects were enrolled in this study. Patients underwent PRK for treatment of myopia. Subjects were evaluated for refractive error, keratometry, and visual acuity before and six months after surgery. Pre- and post-op non-keratometric astigmatisms were calculated by vectorial analysis of the difference between the corneal plane refractive astigmatism and keratometric astigmatism...

Here, we present a case of tonic pupil associated with occult breast cancer as a paraneoplastic neuro-ophthalmology syndrome. A 45-year-old woman developed progressive photophobia and blurred vision due to unilateral Adie's tonic pupil. Magnetic resonance image of her brain and neurological examination (including deep tendon reflexes) were normal at first visit. Follow-up examinations performed by ophthalmologist every 6 month without any change in her condition. After 2 years, patient discovered a mass in her breast which identified to be malignant after diagnostic procedures...

BACKGROUND: Pterygium is a common disorder of the ocular surface. It causes vision impairment -usually irregular type astigmatism- through different mechanisms. In addition, it is believed that surgical excision of the pterygium improves visual problems. The appropriate method to investigate irregular astigmatism is using wavefront analysis. This study was aimed to evaluate wavefront analysis pre and post pterygium surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was performed on 32 patients who underwent surgical excision of pterygium in January 2012...

The purpose of the study is to compare single injection of intravitreal diclofenac (IVD) with intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) in the treatment of eyes with naïve diabetic macular edema (DME). In this randomized clinical trial, 57 eyes of 57 patients were randomly assigned to IVD group (30 eyes), cases who received a single intravitreal injection of diclofenac (500 μg/0.1 ml), and IVB group (27 eyes), cases who received a single intravitreal injection of bevacizumab (1.25 mg). Change in best-corrected visual acuity in logMAR at week 12 was the primary outcome measure...

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship of spherical equivalent (SE) with refractive, corneal, and residual astigmatism. METHODS: Using stratified cluster sampling, 6,311 individuals were invited and 82.2% participated in this study. Examinations including uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity tests, refraction, slit-lamp examination, and funduscopy were performed for all participants. Refraction and keratometry were used to calculate refractive and corneal astigmatism, respectively, and their difference was regarded as residual astigmatism...

OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy of a single dose of topical diclofenac 0.1% and ketorolac 0.5%, with placebo and with each other in the prevention of post-PRK pain and discomfort. METHODS: In this randomized double-masked trial, adults undergoing bilateral PRK surgery were assigned to two arms. The first arm received a single dose diclofenac 0.1%, randomly in either the right, or left eye, and artificial tear (as the placebo) in the other eye. The second arm received ketorolac 0...

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of intravitreal injection of clindamycin and dexamethasone with classic treatment for ocular toxoplasmosis. DESIGN: Prospective, randomized single-masked clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 68 patients with active ocular toxoplasmosis were assigned randomly to 2 treatment groups: 34 in the intravitreal clindamycin plus dexamethasone (IVCD) group and 34 in the classic treatment (CT) group. INTERVENTION: The IVCD group received 1 to 3 injection(s) of 1 mg intravitreal clindamycin and 400 μg dexamethasone, and the CT group received 6 weeks of treatment with pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine plus prednisolone...

PURPOSE: To compare the results of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) with Q-factor customized aspheric ablation and wavefront-guided customized ablation for correction of myopia compound with astigmatism. METHODS: Fifty-six patients were enrolled in this prospective controlled study. In each patient, one eye was randomly assigned for treatment with the Q-factor customized PRK (custom-Q study group) and the other eye treated with wavefront-guided customized PRK. Preoperative and 3-month postoperative manifest refraction, contrast sensitivity, visual acuity, aberrometry, and asphericity of the cornea were compared between the two groups...

Although sulfur mustard (SM) has been used as a chemical warfare agent since the early twentieth century, it has reemerged in the past decade as a major threat around the world. This agent injured over 100,000 Iranians and one-third is suffering from late effects until today. Mustard affects many organs such as the skin, eyes, and lungs, as well as the gastrointestinal, endocrine, and hematopoietic system. In this study we focused on review of the late Cutaneous and ocular complications caused by exposure to SM...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of corneal flap hinge position on dry eye after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). METHODS: In a prospective double-masked randomized controlled clinical trial, 212 consecutive eyes of 106 myopic patients underwent LASIK; in each patient, one eye was randomly assigned to the superior hinge and the other eye to the nasal hinge procedure. The patients were examined pre-operatively and 1 week, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after surgery for visual acuity, fluorescein tear film breakup time and Schirmer's baseline tear secretion test; a subjective evaluation of dry eye symptoms was accomplished by the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire at the 1-month, 3-month and 6-month postoperative visits...
