The objective of present study was to assess the safety and efficacy of nanocurcumin as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent in adults with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We conducted a 12-month, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial at a neurological referral center in Iran. Eligible patients with a definite or probable ALS diagnosis were randomly assigned to receive either nanocurcumin (80 mg daily) or placebo in a 1:1 ratio. A computerized random number generator was used to prepare the randomization list...

Background: Since thin and high-quality flaps produce more satisfactory surgical outcomes, flaps created by mechanical microkeratomes are more economical as compared with femtosecond lasers, and no Iranian study has concentrated laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) flap peculiarities between Moria Sub-Bowman keratoplasty (SBK) microkeratomes and LDV femtoseconds, the present study compares and contrasts them. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was done on all patients who underwent LASIK surgery 1-month before this study...

Background: To assess the clinical consequences of AcrySof toric intraocular lens (IOL) and Hoya toric IOL implantation to correct preexisting corneal astigmatism in patients undergoing cataract surgery. Materials and Methods: In this study, we examined 55 eyes of 45 patients with at least 1.00 D corneal astigmatism who were scheduled for cataract surgery. After phacoemulsification, toric IOL was inserted and axis was aligned. We observed the patients, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), keratometry, manifest refraction, and IOL axis alignment 6 months after surgery...

In this study, co-delivery system was achieved via plasmid encoding TNF related apoptosis inducing ligand (pTRAIL) and doxorubicin (DOX) using carrier based on polypropylenimine (PPI) modified with 10-bromodecanoic acid. Incorporation of alkylcarboxylate chain to PPIs (G4 and G5) could improve transfection efficiency via overcoming the plasma membrane barrier of the cells and decrease cytotoxicity of PPI. Characterization of fabricated NPs revealed that PPI G5 in which 30% of primary amines were substituted by alkyl carboxylate chain (PPI G5-Alkyl 30%) has higher drug loading as compared to the other formulations...

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is considered by decreased bone strength that escalates the threat of fractures. Positive effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) with pulse wave have been demonstrated in cell culture and animal models. The aim of this study was to assess the in vivo effects of PBM on viability and calcium ion release of ovariectomy induced osteoporosis (OVX) - bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 18 female rats were distributed into the following groups: 1) control healthy, 2) LASER-healthy (890nm, 80Hz, 1...

PURPOSE: To compare dry eye signs and symptoms between patients with preoperative low and normal Schirmer test after Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). METHODS: In this prospective, nonrandomized, comparative case series, 76 eyes of 76 patients were preoperatively categorized into two groups according to selected criteria for characterization of tear film status: the low Schirmer test value (STV) group and the normal STV group. For the tear function assessment, we performed a Schirmer test with and without anesthesia, tear break-up time (TBUT) test, and measurement dry eye symptoms using the Farsi translation of Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire pre- and 3 months post-operation...

Evaluating the efficacy of anticancer drugs is an evolving and research-oriented issue. The objective of this study was to reduce the insolubility of chlorambucil (CBL) in water and improve the anticancer activity of CBL in vitro and in vivo through the conjugation of CBL with anionic linear-globular dendrimer (second generation, G2). In the current study, the anticancer activity among three groups that include CBL, CBL-G2 dendrimer, and control was measured in vitro and in vivo. In vitro studies showed that G2 anionic linear-globular polyethylene-glycol-based dendrimer, which conjugated to the CBL exterior through an ester linkage, was able to significantly improve the treatment efficacy over clinical CBL alone with respect to proliferation assay, 2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide; half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) was calculated to be 141 µg/mL for CBL alone and 27...

BACKGROUND: Oxaliplatin induced peripheral neurotoxicity (OXIPN) is the major dose-limiting and long-lasting side effect of oxaliplatin. N-3 PUFAs have neuroprotective property via their effects on voltage-gated ion channels and by reducing the production of proinflammatory cytokines that causes neuropathy. This study was a randomized double blind placebo controlled trial to find the possible advantages of n-3 PUFAs for preventing and reducing the severity of OXIPN in patients with colon cancer...

BACKGROUND: Corneal transplantation is a surgery in which cornea is replaced by a donated one and can be completely penetrating keratoplasty (PK) or included a part of cornea deep lamellar keratoplasty (DLK). Although the functional results are limited by some complications, it is considered as one of the most successful surgeries. This study aimed to compare the refractive errors after same size corneal transplantation through DLK and PK methods in keratoconus patients over 20 years...
