In glaucoma surgery, fibrotic processes occur, leading to impairment of liquid outflow. Activated fibroblasts are responsible for postoperative scarring. The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) pathway plays a key role in fibroblast function, differentiation and proliferation. The aim of this study was the characterization of the fibrotic potential of two subtypes of primary human ocular fibroblasts and the attempt to inhibit fibrotic processes specifically, without impairing cell viability. For fibrosis inhibition we focused on the small molecule pirfenidone, which has been shown to prevent pulmonary fibrosis by the decrease of the expression of TGF-β1, TGF-β2 and TGF-β3 cytokines...

Continuous and repetitive performance of cognitive tasks is likely to cause a change in the alertness levels of an individual. The present paper investigates the changes in EEG as a marker of alertness during an experiment designed to induce cognitive fatigue in subjects by continuous and repetitive performance of standard neuropsychological tests. Electroencephalogram (EEG), speech data and high-speed ocular images are recorded during the task set comprising of an Auditory Response Test (ART) Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT), a Letter Counting (LC) task, and a variant of the Stroop Task...

PURPOSE: To identify and determine differences in lipid profiles of aqueous humor (AH) in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The lipidomic profile of 10 samples of AH of patients with OAG and 10 controls was analyzed. Patients with a history of anterior segment surgery, anterior segment pathology, or intraocular injections were excluded. Topical ocular medications within the last 6 months were reported. AH was obtained during the first step of nonperforating deep sclerotomy in OAG patients and during refractive lensectomy in controls...

PURPOSE: To study the differences in early corneal cellular events and biomechanical properties after femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK performed using conventional or inverted side-cut angles. METHODS: In the laboratory study, left eyes of 24 rabbits underwent LASIK flap creation with a 70° or 115° side-cut. The contralateral eyes served as controls. The corneas were harvested 24 hours postoperatively. In the clinical study, 2 eyes of each patient (n = 29) were randomized to corneal flap creation with 70° or 115° side-cut angles during LASIK...

INTRODUCTION: The Goldmann applanation tonometer readings were noted to be markedly reduced after Lasik surgery using a thin flap technique which is widely used nowadays, to correct a wide range of myopia and astigmatism. The Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) is considered one of the important tools for refinement of Intraocular Pressure (IOP) measurements. The aim of this study is to evaluate and refine ORA measurements for IOP changes post- M2 90 Moria microkeratome Lasik procedure for Egyptian myopic and astigmatic patients trying to aid in glaucoma diagnosis and management...

Objective: To evaluate the effects of side-cut angles on corneal biomechanical properties after femtosecond laser assisted-laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK). Methods: In this clinical control study, 97 right eyes of 97 patients with myopia and myopic astigmatism undergoing FS-LASIK surgery were included randomly. Two types of side-cut angles were designed for the flap, 90° in 48 eyes and 130° in 49 eyes. The values of corneal resistance factor (CRF), cornea hysteresis (CH) and 37 biomechanical waveform parameters were measured using the ocular response analyzer preoperatively and at 1 and 3 months postoperatively...

Methods: Clinical observational study. One hundred and eighty-seven cases (365 eyes) undergoing SMILE surgery were enrolled. Corneal hysteresis (CH) and corneal resistance factor (CRF) were measured before and after surgery by the ocular response analyzer (ORA). Linear regression of CH, CRF and CCT, and percentage of tissue ablation were calculated...

Ocular marginal zone lymphoma is a common type of low-grade B-cell lymphoma. To investigate the genomic changes that occur in ocular marginal zone lymphoma, we analyzed 10 cases of ocular marginal zone lymphoma using whole-genome and RNA sequencing and an additional 38 cases using targeted sequencing. Major genetic alterations affecting genes involved in nuclear factor (NF)-κB pathway activation (60%), chromatin modification and transcriptional regulation (44%), and B-cell differentiation (23%) were identified...

PURPOSE: Contact lenses are associated with discomfort during wear. This may be the result of stimulation of the ocular surface and production of pro-inflammatory mediators which are then released into the tears. This study examined changes in the concentration in tears of arachidonic acid metabolites (AAM) prostaglandins, cysteinyl leukotrienes, and resolvin-D1, as well as histamine in a general contact lens population in the morning and evening. METHOD: Tears were collected twice a day (morning and evening) for up to 10 days on two different occasions (with and without contact lens wear) from 30 experienced contact lens wearers for analysis of AAM and a separate group (N = 33) for analysis of histamine...

Leptospirosis is potentially a fatal zoonosis acquired by contact of skin and mucosal surfaces with soil and water contaminated with infected urine. We analyzed the outcome of infection of C3H-HeJ mice with Leptospira interrogans serovar Copenhageni, using an enzootic mode of transmission, the conjunctival route. Infection led to weight loss and L. interrogans dissemination from blood to urine. However, the sequence of these events occurred later and were not as clearly separated in time given that spirochete detection overlapped in both tissues...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical disease, humoral response and viral distribution of recent Porcine rubulavirus (PorPV) isolates in experimentally infected pigs. Four, 6-piglet (5-days old) groups were employed (G1-84, G2-93, G3-147, and G4-T). Three viral strains were used for the experimental infection: the reference strain LPMV-1984 (Michoacán 1984) and two other strains isolated in 2013, one in Queretaro (Qro/93/2013) and the other in Michoacán (Mich/147/2013). Each strain was genetically characterized by amplification and sequencing of the gene encoding hemagglutinin-neuroamidase (HN)...

Corneal Visualization Scheimpflug Technology (CST) and Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) measurements were carried out in 105 eyes of 69 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. All patients had axial length (AL), central corneal thickness (CCT), intraocular pressure (IOP) with Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) and eight visual fields (VF)s with the Humphrey Field Analyzer. VF progression was summarized using a time trend analysis of mean total deviation (mTD) and the association between mTD progression rate and a number of ocular parameters (including CST and ORA measurements) was assessed using mixed linear regression analysis...

OBJECTIVE: Infliximab (IFX) is a monoclonal tumor necrosis factor-α-inhibiting antibody used in children with refractory arthritis and uveitis. Immunogenicity is associated with a lack of clinical response and infusion reactions in adults; data on immunogenicity in children treated with IFX for rheumatic diseases are scarce. We aimed to describe the prevalence of anti-IFX antibodies and determine co-factors associated with anti-IFX antibodies in children with inflammatory rheumatic and ocular diseases...
