Exfoliation syndrome (XFS) is the most common known risk factor for secondary glaucoma and a major cause of blindness worldwide. Variants in two genes, LOXL1 and CACNA1A, have previously been associated with XFS. To further elucidate the genetic basis of XFS, we collected a global sample of XFS cases to refine the association at LOXL1, which previously showed inconsistent results across populations, and to identify new variants associated with XFS. We identified a rare protective allele at LOXL1 (p.Phe407, odds ratio (OR) = 25, P = 2...

REVIEW
Behzad Amoozgar, Sasan Moghimi, Ying Han, Shan C Lin
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Angle closure glaucoma is a prominent burden for the worldwide health system. Because this disorder is commonly asymptomatic, and can lead to irreversible blindness, the proper screening and early management of this disease can be critical. The definitions of angle closure and consequently its treatment guidelines have been dynamically modified and updated in the past decades. Surgical and laser techniques have been adapted to address the different mechanisms involved in the manifestation of the disease and properly prevent its progression in different stages...

PURPOSE: To evaluate different mechanisms of primary angle closure (PAC) and to quantify anterior chamber (AC) parameters in different subtypes of angle closure disease using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). METHODS: In this prospective study, 115 eyes of 115 patients with angle closure disease were included and categorized into three groups: 1) fellow eyes of acute angle closure (AAC; 40 eyes); 2) primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG; 39 eyes); and 3) primary angle closure suspect (PACS; 36 eyes)...

PURPOSE: To compare optic nerve head (ONH) morphology of optic nerve atrophy between eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and eyes with a history of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic atrophy (NAION) using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 121 eyes of 91 patients consisted of moderate to severe POAG (n = 32 eyes), visual field mean deviation-matched NAION (n = 30 eyes) and their fellow eyes (n = 30 eyes), and healthy controls (n = 29)...

PURPOSE: The efficacy and sufficiency of a healthcare system is directly related to the knowledge and skills of graduates working in the system. In this regard, many different assessment methods have been proposed to evaluate various skills of the learners. Video Observation of Procedural Skills (VOPS) is one newly-proposed method. In this study we aimed to compare the results of the VOPS method with the more commonly used Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS). METHODS: In this prospective study conducted in 2012, all 10 ophthalmology residents of post graduate year 4 were selected for participation...

AIM: To evaluate anterior chamber biometric factors and intraoperative metrics associated with the intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction after phacoemulsification in non-glaucomatous pseudoexfoliative syndrome (PXS) eyes. METHOD: Thirty-three patients were enrolled in this prospective interventional study. Images were excluded if they had poor quality, poor perpendicularity or inability to locate sclera spurs. Anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber area (ACA), iris thickness, iris area, iris curvature, lens vault, angle opening distance (AOD500, AOD750) and trabecular iris space area (TISA500, TISA750) were measured in qualified images using the Zhongshan Angle Assessment Program and compared preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively...

PURPOSE: To compare long term efficacy of phacoemulsification in the early management of acute primary angle closure (APAC) after aborting an acute attack and performing laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI). METHODS: In this nonrandomized comparative prospective study, we included 35 subjects presenting with APAC who had responded to medical treatment and LPI with intraocular pressure (IOP) less than 25 mmHg. Twenty patients with visually significant cataract with visual acuity of <20/30 were assigned to the "Phaco/LPI" group and underwent phacoemulsification within 6 weeks of the attack...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between lens position parameters and intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction after cataract surgery in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and in nonglaucomatous patients. METHODS: The main outcomes of this prospective study were percent and absolute IOP change, which were calculated using the preoperative IOP and the IOP 4 months after cataract surgery in POAG and nonglaucomatous eyes. Lens position (LP), defined as anterior chamber depth (ACD) + one-half lens thickness (LT), was assessed preoperatively using parameters from optical biometry...
