Halal and kosher slaughter have given the utmost importance to the sharpness of knives during the slaughter of animals. A sharp knife of appropriate dimension (blade length) makes slaughter less painful during neck severance and facilitates desirable bleeding. The role of knife sharpness has not been given due credit from an animal welfare perspective and is likely ignored by the people involved in slaughterhouses. A neat, clean, and efficient neck cut by an extremely sharp knife reduces the pain. It improves the bleeding out, thus making animals unconscious early without undergoing unnecessary pain and stress...

Artificial womb technology for extracorporeal gestation of human offspring (ectogenesis or ectogestation) has profound ethical, sociological and religious implications for Muslim communities. In this article we examine the usage of the technology through the lens of Islamic ethico-legal frameworks specifically the legal maxims ( al-Qawaid al-Fiqhiyyah ) and higher objectives of Islamic law ( Maqaṣid al-Shariah ). Our analysis suggests that its application may be contingently permissible ( halal ) in situations of dire need such as sustaining life and development of extremely premature newborns, for advancing fetal medicine and avoiding maternal co-morbidities during fetal treatment, and for enabling motherhood for women without functional wombs, or who face grave medical risks in pregnancy...

One of the needs for financial digitalization in the study of Islamic contracts and Islamic business law is the use of digital platforms with digital currencies. Regarding the merits and downsides of its Sharia restrictions and its halal certification, which is currently under discussion, digital currencies and perks have generated controversy in Jordan and other Islamic countries. Methods : This study intends to analyze the legal foundations of digital currency from Jordanian and Islamic legal perspectives...

We propose a CRISPR/Cas12a-mediated recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) detection method that combines RPA with Cas12a cleavage for the detection of halal food adulteration, which is of global concern, particularly for Muslim consumers. We optimized the reagent concentrations for the Cas12a cleavage steps and designed and screened gRNA targeting a conserved area of the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I ( COX1 ) gene. This procedure successfully detected the presence of porcine components as low as 5 pg/μL in the linear range of 5-1000 pg/μL...

Muslim scholars are not unanimous on the issue of the application of stunning in the halal slaughtering of animals. Appropriate stunning makes animals unconscious instantaneously, thus avoiding unnecessary pain and stress during the slaughtering of animals. The present review comprehensively summarizes the available scientific literature on stunning methods in view of their halal compliance during the slaughter of animals. The issue of maximum blood loss, reversibility of consciousness, and animals remaining alive during the halal cut are the key determinants of approval of stunning in the halal slaughter...

Production of morphologically and physiologically variable seeds is an important strategy that helps plants to survive in unpredictable natural conditions. However, the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and most agronomically essential crops yield visually homogenous seeds. Using automated phenotype analysis, we observed that in Arabidopsis small seeds tend to have higher primary and secondary dormancy levels when compared to large ones. Transcriptomic analysis revealed distinct gene expression profiles between large and small seeds...

Considering the increasing number of Muslim populations worldwide and the necessity of online applications during health crises, this research aims to study the consumer's purchase intention of halal health supplement products online by examining variables influencing consumer's purchase intention. The Theory of Planned Behaviour has been applied as an underlying theory for this study, including religiosity and COVID-19 as an extension to the theory...

Optimizing blood loss during the slaughtering process is crucial for obtaining high-quality meat, as the presence of meat blood can lead to a reduction in shelf life and negative sensory evaluation by consumers. Moreover, the high water and nutritional content of the meat, along with its appropriate pH value, necessitate careful consideration of the remaining blood, as it can support microbial spoilage of chicken meat. In this context the effects of making an extra cut on conventionally halal-slaughtered broiler's leg which had an extra cut at the cartilage point where the drumstick and the claw part meet, before the bloodletting process were analysed...

At the scene of homicide crimes, if insect remains are found on the victim, these are great help unravel the circumstances of death. The carrion flies (Diptera: Calliphora) are usually the first to colonise the corpse and one of the most frequently observed group of animal at the scene or in the autopsy room. In this case study, I will show how the examination of the eggs of a forensically important fly species found on one victim of the double homicide helped to establish the time of death and its significance as evidence...

Additionally, by being aware of the link between food and mental health, the community can be encouraged to make informed food choices in order to avoid unfavorable outcomes like criminality. Food behaviors are shifting significantly over the world. Islamic dietary laws inform halal standards, defining which foods are halal (lawful and permissible). Many halal foods are produced in non-Muslim majority countries increasing the likelihood they might be haram (prohibited). Halal certification is one way to operationalize halal standards, hence protecting Muslim consumers. At present there is no unified halal standard guiding halal certification. The aim of this study was to determine the perceived challenges in implementing halal standards in the United States...

Beef sausage (BS) is one of the most favored meat products due to its nutrition and good taste. However, for economic purposes, BS is often adulterated with pork by unethical players. Pork consumption is strictly prohibited for religions including Islam and Judaism. Therefore, advanced detection methods are highly required to warrant the halal authenticity of BS. This research aimed to develop a liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) method to determine the halal authenticity of BS using an untargeted metabolomics approach...

Lateral flow devices (LFDs) are straightforward scientific tools that have made substantial advances in recent years. They have been used in many fields including the meat industry to detect disease markers, determine meat freshness or meat species determination. They are, therefore, significant in the research of meat adulteration by mixed animal species, because food component authenticity is a serious concern encompassing health, economic, legal, and religious issues. Pork adulteration is one of the most crucial issues in the global meat industry...

The global Halal food market is forecast to reach US$1.67 trillion by 2025, growing to meet the dietary demands of a rapidly increasing Muslim population, set to comprise 30% of the global population by mid-century. Meat consumption levels are increasing in many Muslim countries, with important implications for health and environmental sustainability. Alt protein products are currently being manufactured and positioned as one possible solution to reduce the environmental impact of meat consumption, yet, little is currently known about the Halal status of these products, nor the extent to which they appeal to Muslim consumers in emerging markets in Asia and Africa...
