Ultrasound-guided Pecs block can provide perioperative analgesia for breast surgery. A single-injection technique (COMBIPECS) combines both Pecs 1 and Pecs 2 blocks in a single needle pass. This technique saves time and is equally effective as the modified Pecs block which uses 2 needle passes. We present a case series of 21 patients who received the COMBIPECS block as a part of multimodal analgesia for breast cancer surgery. The block was administered before the surgery after induction of general anesthesia...

Phase-pure BiFeO3 films were grown directly via dual-source low-pressure CVD (LPCVD) from the ligand-matched precursors [Bi(O(t)Bu)3] and [Fe(O(t)Bu)3]2, without the requirement for oxidising gas or post deposition annealing. Photocatalytic testing for water oxidation revealed extremely high activity for PEC water splitting and photocatalytic water oxidation under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) with a benchmark IPCE for BiFeO3 of 23% at 400 nm. The high activity is ascribed to the ultrafine morphology achieved via the LPCVD process...

Ni-doped ZnFe2O4 (Ni(X)Zn1-x,Fe2O4; x = 0.0 to 0.5) nanoparticles were synthesized by simple microwave combustion method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirms that all compositions crystallize with cubic spinel ZnFe2O4. The lattice parameter decreases with increase in Ni content resulting in the reduction of lattice strain. High resolution scanning electron microscope (HR-SEM) and transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) images revealed that the as-prepared samples are crystalline with particle size distribution in 42-50 nm range...

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging chemicals of concern detected in surface waters globally. Recent reviews advocate that PPCP occurrence, fate, and exposure need to be better predicted and characterized. The use of pharmaceutical prescription rates to estimate PPCP concentrations in the environment has been suggested. Concentrations of 7 pharmaceuticals (acetylsalicylic acid, diclofenac, fenoprofen, gemfibrozil, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and naproxen) were measured in municipal wastewater using gas chromatography/ion trap-tandem mass spectroscopy (GC/IT-MS/MS)...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) treatment suppresses the severity of acute lung injury (ALI). The effects of ACE2 in ALI have been shown to not only result from its antagonizing hydrolyzing angiotensin II (AngII), which is responsible for reduction in the vascular tension and pulmonary accumulation of inflammatory cells, but also result from a role of ACE2 in suppressing the ALI-induced apoptosis of pulmonary endothelial cells (PECs). Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms of the role of ACE2 on PEC apoptosis are not completely understood...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Studies have shown that patients with acute eosinophilic pneumonia (AEP) and with initial eosinophilia have a milder disease than those with an initial normal peripheral eosinophil count (PEC). We investigated the effect of a rapid corticosteroid tapering strategy in AEP patients with initial eosinophilia. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study in patients with AEP with initial eosinophilia (n = 14) who stopped corticosteroid treatment after achieving clinical stabilization compared with AEP patients with an initial normal PEC (n = 45) who received 2-week treatment with corticosteroid...

Inverse opal (IO) films of tin dioxide (SnO2) were fabricated on polystyrene (PS) beads (diameter=350 nm (±20 nm) with a spin coating method. To compensate for the large band gap (Eg=3.8 eV), a thin TiO2 shell was deposited on the SnO2-IO films with atomic layer deposition (ALD), which produced shells with thicknesses of 10-40 nm. The morphological changes and crystalline properties of the SnO2 and TiO2-coated SnO2 (herein after referred to as TiO2/SnO2) IO films were investigated with field-emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively...

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells for light-driven water splitting are prepared using hematite nanorod arrays on conductive glass as the photoanode. These devices improve the photocurrent of the hematite-based photoanode for water splitting, owing to fewer surface traps and decreased electron recombination resulting from the one-dimensional structure. By employing a molecular ruthenium co-catalyst, which contains a strong 2,6-pyridine-dicarboxylic acid anchoring group at the hematite photoanode, the photocurrent of the PEC cell is enhanced with high stability for over 10 000 s in a 1 m KOH solution...

For semiconductor-based PEC systems, loading an appropriate cocatalyst on a semiconductor (such as a solar-active material) can significantly improve the PEC activity due to the suppression of photogenerated charge recombination. But there is little direct information about the role of a cocatalyst in the spatial separation of photogenerated charge carriers. In our work, a combination of surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS), transient photovoltage (TPV) technique, photoelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy (PEIS) and transient photocurrent measurements was used to study the real role of Ni(OH)2 as a cocatalyst for the enhanced PEC performance of Ni(OH)2-modified Ti-doped α-Fe2O3...

A novel aptasensor for thrombin with high visible-light activity was facilely fabricated based on graphitic carbon nitride/TiO2 (g-C3N4/TiO2) photoelectrochemical (PEC) composite. Crystallization of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and their strong interaction with g-C3N4 sheet were confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), both of which contributed to the high photocurrent intensity under visible-light irradiation. Carboxyl functionalized thrombin aptamers were first successfully bound to the g-C3N4/TiO2 modified electrode as proven by photoelectrochemical test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis...

Ultrasensitive multiplexed detection of biomarkers on a single electrode is usually a great challenge for electrochemical sensors. Here, a light addressable photoelectrochemical sensor (LAPECS) for the sensitive detection of multiple DNA biomarkers on a single electrode was reported. The sensor was constructed through four steps: (1) immobilization of capture DNA (C-DNA) of different targets on different areas of a single large-sized gold film electrode, (2) recognition of each target DNA (T-DNA) and the corresponding biotin-labeled probe DNA (P-DNA) through hybridization, (3) reaction of the biotin-labeled probe DNA with a streptavidin-labeled all-carbon PEC bioprobe, and (4) PEC detection of multiple DNA targets one by one via a light addressing strategy...

Controlling the interface electronic band structure in heterostructures is essential for developing highly efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) photoanodes. Here, we presented an enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by introducing the piezotronics concept, i.e., piezoelectric polarization (Ppz)-induced band engineering. In a Ni(OH)2-decorated ZnO photoanode system, appreciably improved photocurrent density of sulfite (SO3(2-)) and hydroxyl (OH(-)) oxidation reactions were obtained by physically deflecting the photoanode...

To date, some of the highest performance photocathodes of a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell have been shown with single-crystalline p-type InP wafers, exhibiting half-cell solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiencies of over 14%. However, the high cost of single-crystalline InP wafers may present a challenge for future large-scale industrial deployment. Analogous to solar cells, a thin-film approach could address the cost challenges by utilizing the benefits of the InP material while decreasing the use of expensive materials and processes...

Solution-based ZnO nanorod arrays (NRAs) were modified with controlled N doping by an advanced ion implantation method, and were subsequently utilized as photoanodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting under visible light irradiation. A gradient distribution of N dopants along the vertical direction of ZnO nanorods was realized. N doped ZnO NRAs displayed a markedly enhanced visible-light-driven PEC photocurrent density of ~160 μA/cm(2) at 1.1 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE), which was about 2 orders of magnitude higher than pristine ZnO NRAs...
