Background Critically ill patients are at greater risk for healthcare-associated infections (HAI). The use of maintenance bundles helps to reduce this risk but also generates a rapid accumulation of complex data that is difficult to aggregate and subsequently act upon. Objectives We hypothesized that a digital display summarizing nursing documentation of invasive catheters (including central venous access devices, arterial catheters, and urinary catheters) would improve invasive device maintenance care and documentation...

Background: Early studies assessing peripartum mood disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic have conflicting results. Objective: The primary aim was to examine if postpartum depression (PPD) was more common or more severe during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to earlier periods, and to assess what individual factors may worsen the impact of the pandemic. Methods: Electronic health records at an academic pediatric practice in Michigan identified 242 biological mother-child dyads with delivery between 1/1/2017 and 12/31/2021...

SAP teams, groups of trained school and community professionals, review referrals, and connect students to services. State leadership conducts an annual SAP team survey, but capacity to evaluate data and affect change is limited. In 2020, leadership partnered with [institution name] to collaboratively review the survey data. METHODS: Frequencies and percentages were calculated...

Metabolomics, proteomics and DNA methylome assays, when done in tandem from the same blood sample and analyzed together, offer an opportunity to evaluate the molecular basis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) course and pathogenesis. We performed separate metabolomics, proteomics, and DNA methylome assays on blood samples from two well-characterized cohorts of 159 active duty male participants with relatively recent onset PTSD (<1.5 years) and 300 male veterans with chronic PTSD (>7 years)...

BACKGROUND: Although a clinician's ability to employ high-value decision-making is influenced by training, many undergraduate medical education programmes lack a formal curriculum in high-value, cost-conscious care. We present a curriculum developed through a cross-institutional collaboration that was used to teach students at two institutions about this topic and can serve as a framework for other institutions to develop similar curricula. APPROACH: The faculty from the University of Virginia and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine created a 2-week-long online course to teach medical students the fundamentals of high-value care...

Animal manures contain a large and diverse reservoir of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes that could potentially spillover into the general population through transfer of AMR to antibiotic-susceptible pathogens. The ability of poultry litter microbiota to transmit AMR was examined in this study. Abundance of phenotypic AMR was assessed for litter microbiota to the antibiotics: ampicillin (Ap; 25 μg/mL), chloramphenicol (Cm; 25 μg/mL), streptomycin (Sm; 100 μg/mL), and tetracycline (Tc; 25 μg/mL)...

We report on the health care experiences of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) from families who are primarily Spanish-speaking. Data were collected through three methods: (1) a nationally distributed, 20-item survey, (2) two focus groups with seven family caregivers of individuals with DS who self-identified as living in primarily Spanish speaking households, and (3) 20 interviews with primary care providers (PCPs) who care for patients who are underrepresented minorities. Standard summary statistics were used to analyze the quantitative survey results...

Contact zones provide important insights into the evolutionary processes that underlie lineage divergence and speciation. Here, we use a contact zone to ascertain speciation potential in the red-eyed treefrog (Agalychnis callidryas), a brightly coloured and polymorphic frog that exhibits unusually high levels of intraspecific variation. Populations of A. callidryas differ in a number of traits, several of which are known sexual signals that mediate premating reproductive isolation in allopatric populations...

Down syndrome (DS) has a unique medical and psychological profile. To date, few studies have asked individuals with DS about their views of health, and fewer have explored the impact of COVID-19 on the health of individuals with DS and their families. We used a mixed methods approach including two studies on the health of individuals with DS and their parents conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic: (1) eight virtual focus groups, comprised of 20 parents and 8 individuals with DS to obtain participants' views of health, and (2) a 20-item questionnaire on health care experience of patients with DS who are African American or come from primarily Spanish-speaking homes...

A key broadening participation challenge for science communication is to reach non-traditional audiences beyond those already interested in science. In this study we test a "Guerilla Science" approach that blends elements of access, by removing barriers to participation, with those of inclusion, by designing participant-centered activities, for reaching an art-interested adult audience at the FIGMENT art festival in New York City. Our results show that participants at Guerilla Science were similar to festival goers overall in their connection to and interest in science, indicating the effectiveness of the approach for engaging non-traditional audiences and those who might not self-select into science activities...

Beech leaf disease (BLD), an emerging threat to American beech (Fagus grandifolia) in the northern U.S. and Canada, was recently confirmed to be caused by the nematode, Litylenchus crenatae subsp. mccannii (hereafter L. crenatae). Consequently, there is a need for a rapid, sensitive, and accurate method for detecting L. crenatae for both diagnostic as well as control purposes. This research developed a new set of DNA primers that specifically amplify L. crenatae and allow for accurate detection of the nematode in plant tissue...

Decline in neuromuscular function with aging is known to be a major determinant of disability and all-cause mortality in late life. Despite the importance of the problem, the neurobiology of age-associated muscle weakness is poorly understood. In a previous report, we performed untargeted metabolomics on frail older adults and discovered prominent alteration in the kynurenine pathway, the major route of dietary tryptophan degradation that produces neurotoxic intermediate metabolites. We also showed that neurotoxic kynurenine pathway metabolites are correlated with increased frailty score...

Among extant great apes, orangutans are considered the most sexually dimorphic in body size. However, the expression of sexual dimorphism in orangutans is more complex than simply males being larger than females. At sexual maturity, some male orangutans develop cheek pads (flanges) while other males remain unflanged even after becoming reproductively capable. Sometimes flange development is delayed in otherwise sexually mature males for a few years. In other cases, flange development is delayed for many years or decades, with some males even spending their entire lifespan as unflanged adults...

Multiple pathological mechanisms are involved in the development of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neurotoxicity (CIPN). Recent work has provided insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying chemotherapy-induced axonal degeneration. This review integrates evidence from preclinical and clinical work on the onset, progression and outcome of axonal degeneration in CIPN. We review likely triggers of axonal degeneration in CIPN and highlight evidence of molecular pathways involved in axonal degeneration and their relevance to CIPN, including SARM1-mediated axon degeneration pathway...
