Tough carboxymethylcellulose nanofibers (CMF)/zirconium (Zr) hydrogels were easily obtained by a freeze-crosslinking method, where Zr-containing HCl solution was added to frozen CMF sol and the mixture was allowed to thaw. The Zr content of the hydrogels increased with increasing Zr concentration in the initial HCl solution. Furthermore, the mechanical strength increased with increasing Zr content. The Young's modulus value was improved by approximately 6 times compared to the CMF hydrogel without Zr, i.e. , from 4...

We investigate the influence of quantum interference (QI) and broken spin-symmetry on the thermoelectric response of node-possessing junctions, finding a dramatic enhancement of the spin-thermopower ( S s ), figure-of-merit ( Z s T ), and maximum thermodynamic efficiency (ηs max ) caused by destructive QI. Using many-body and single-particle methods, we calculate the response of 1,3-benzenedithiol and cross-conjugated molecule-based junctions subject to an applied magnetic field, finding nearly universal behavior over a range of junction parameters with S s , Z s T , and reaching peak values of <mml:math xmlns:mml="https://www...

INTRODUCTION: Hyperpolarized 129 Xe MRI and spectroscopy is a rapidly growing technique for assessing lung function, with applications in a wide range of obstructive, restrictive, and pulmonary vascular disease. However, normal variations in 129 Xe measures of gas exchange across healthy subjects are not well characterized, presenting an obstacle to differentiating disease processes from the consequences of expected physiological heterogeneity. Here, we use multivariate models to evaluate the role of age, sex, and BMI in a range of commonly used 129 Xe measures of gas exchange...

INTRODUCTION: Rhinophonia aperta may result from velopharyngeal insufficiency. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been discussed in the context of muscle strengthening. The aim of this study was to evaluate in healthy subjects whether NMES can change the velopharyngeal closure pattern during phonation and increase muscle strength. METHOD: Eleven healthy adult volunteers (21-57 years) were included. Pressure profiles were measured by high resolution manometry (HRM): isolated sustained articulation of /a/ over 5 s (protocol 1), isolated NMES applied to soft palate above motor threshold (protocol 2) and combined articulation with NMES (protocol 3)...

Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, has been experiencing an HIV outbreak among people who inject drugs (PWID) since 2015. A key focus of the public health response has been to increase HIV testing among those at risk of infection. Our aim was to assess the impact of COVID-19 on HIV testing among PWID in Glasgow. HIV test uptake in the last 12 months was quantified among: (1) PWID recruited in six Needle Exchange Surveillance Initiative (NESI) surveys (n = 6110); linked laboratory data for (2) people prescribed opioid agonist therapy (OAT) (n = 14,527) and (3) people hospitalised for an injecting-related hospital admission (IRHA) (n = 12,621) across four time periods: pre-outbreak (2010-2014); early-outbreak (2015-2016); ongoing-outbreak (2017-2019); and COVID-19 (2020-June 21)...

Fundamental knowledge of wet clutches' drag loss behavior is essential for designing low-loss clutch systems. In contrast to the widely investigated injection lubrication, more comprehensive knowledge is needed on the drag loss behavior of dip-lubricated wet clutches. In the development phase, data-driven models allow drag loss predictions with low computational effort and, at the same time, sufficient accuracy. Therefore, this study aimed to deepen and expand knowledge of the drag loss behavior of dip-lubricated wet clutches based on experimental investigations...

Correlating transcriptional profiles with imaging-derived phenotypes has the potential to reveal possible molecular architectures associated with cognitive functions, brain development and disorders. Competitive null models built by resampling genes and self-contained null models built by spinning brain regions, along with varying test statistics, have been used to determine the significance of transcriptional associations. However, there has been no systematic evaluation of their performance in imaging transcriptomics analyses...

Triterpenoid saponins, synthesized via the mevalonic acid (MVA) pathway in the cytoplasm, provide protection against pathogens and pests in plants and health benefits for humans. However, the mechanisms by which triterpenoid saponins are transported between cellular compartments remain uncharacterized. Here, we characterize a tonoplast localized multidrug and toxic compound extrusion transporter, GmMATE100 (encoded by Glyma.18G143700 ), from soybean ( Glycine max L.). GmMATE100 is co-expressed with soyasaponin biosynthetic genes, and its expression was induced by MeJA treatment, which also led to soyasaponin accumulation in soybean roots...

Sprouts of black beans ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.), soybeans ( Glycine max L.) and mung beans ( Vigna radiata L.) are widely consumed foods containing abundant nutrients with biological activities. They are commonly treated with sulphites for the preservation and extension of shelf-life. However, our previous investigation found that immersing the bean sprouts in sulphite might convert the active components into sulphur-containing derivatives, which can affect both the quality and safety of the sprouts. This study explores the use of FTIR in conjunction with chemometric techniques to differentiate between non-immersed (NI) and sodium sulphite immersed (SI) black bean, soybean and mung bean sprouts...

MXenes have extensive applications due to their different properties determined by intrinsic structures and various functional groups. Exploring different functional groups of MXenes leads to improved performance or potential applications. In this work, we prepared new Ti3C2PBrx (x=0.4-0.6) MXene with phosphorus functional groups (-P) through a two-step gas-phase reaction. The acquisition of -P is achieved by replacing bromine functional groups (-Br) of Ti3C2Br2 in the phosphorus vapor. After -Br is replaced with -P, Ti3C2PBrx MXene shows an improved areal capacitance (360 mF cm-2) at 20 mV s-1 compared with Ti3C2Br2 MXene (102 mF cm-2)...

Ageing is a heterogeneous multisystem process involving different rates of decline in physiological integrity across biological systems. In this work, Bi1- x Pb x Cu1- x SeO ( x = 0, 0.02, 0.06, and 0.08) compounds were synthesized by a solid state reaction followed by spark plasma sintering. The effect of simultaneous Bi to Pb substitution and Cu vacancy introduction on thermoelectric properties was investigated systematically. The power factor was significantly enhanced, contributing to the increase in the zT value. As a result, the zT max of 0.75 at 773 K was obtained for the Bi0.94 Pb0.06 Cu0.94 SeO sample. To reveal the factors constraining the zT max of Bi1- x Pb x CuSeO-based oxyselenides, a further careful analysis of literature data was performed...

Introduction Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been used for decades as an established treatment modality for complex wounds, now commonplace in hospitals and various clinical and outpatient settings. Several studies have noted improved healing outcomes with this device, but the current state of literature is in debate on both clinical and economic effectiveness. The use of NPWT can become expensive, largely because of the complexity of wounds and the need for outpatient management, from which a majority of the benefit is derived...
