PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the use of a femtosecond laser (FL) in the eye bank preparation of corneas for Descemet membrane (DM) automated endothelial keratoplasty (fDMAEK) and to compare endothelial cell death in graft preparations between fDMAEK, Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK), and DM endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK). METHODS: Twenty cadaveric tissues were used to test the fDMAEK method. A 9.0-mm-diameter lamellar incision was made using the FL with a 6...

PURPOSE: To develop endothelial keratoplasty-based surgical treatment and management policy for patients with bullous keratopathy complicated by glaucoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS; A total of 41 patients (41 eyes) with bullous keratopathy and concomitant II-III stage glaucoma were enrolled. All patients underwent endothelial keratoplasty of different modification--DSAEK, utDSAEK, DMAEK. Two types of glaucoma drainage surgery were applied--intrascleral amniotic drainage and implantation of a domestically manufactured silicone tubular drainage wrapped in amnion...

The results of different techniques of automated endothelial keratoplasty (EKP) performed in 72 patients with bullous keratopathy are estimated. Automated EKP with superficial flap was performed in 18 patients (1st group), Descemet stripping automated EKP (DSAEK) - in 26 patients (2nd group), Descemet stripping automated EKP (DSAEK) with thin grafts - in 20 patients (3rd group), Descemet membrane automated EKP with stromal rim (DMAEK) - in 8 patients (4th group). According to our results DSAEK with thin grafts is indicated to elderly patients with severe ocular disease (ocular comorbidities, repeated surgery, advanced keratopathy)...

PURPOSE: To report the outcomes of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and Descemet membrane automated endothelial keratoplasty (DMAEK) for failed penetrating keratoplasties (PKs). METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients with a failed PK who were managed with DMEK or DMAEK surgery. Surgical technique, clinical findings, visual outcomes, and complications were documented and reported. RESULTS: Six patients (mean age, 62 years; mean follow-up, 10 months) underwent DMEK (4 patients) or DMAEK (2 patients) under a failed PK...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Graft harvesting for Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) occurs manually and demonstrates surgical difficulties. In the current study, a mechanical automated technique for preparing a donor Descemet membrane (DM) carrying autologous endothelium for DMEK was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten rabbit corneas were placed on an artificial anterior chamber and mechanical separation of the DM was conducted using an Epi-keratome (Senturium; Norwood Abbey EyeCare, Victoria, Australia)...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To determine whether the stromal rim that carries the bare endothelial graft in Descemet's membrane automated endothelial keratoplasty (DMAEK) has any effect on final visual outcome or visual quality. METHODS: Twenty-four DMAEK eyes and 22 Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) eyes (with no stromal rim) were evaluated for corrected distance acuity, full-field Humphrey visual field (VF) 120-2 and pupil size. The inner and outer diameter of the DMAEK stromal ring was measured from slit lamp photos...

PURPOSE: To evaluate vision and endothelial cell survival in an initial Descemet membrane automated endothelial keratoplasty (DMAEK) series. METHODS: This was a prospective nonrandomized study of an initial consecutive series of 40 DMAEK cases, performed with or without concomitant phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. The graft was dissected with a microkeratome. A central 6- to 7-mm big bubble was created to separate endothelium from stroma, and the overlying stroma was excised...
