BACKGROUND: The NHS is struggling with GP recruitment. The Health Education England (HEE) Wass Report (By Choice not by Chance), among its recommendations to boost GP numbers, highlighted undergraduate (UG) GP placement experience as an important influence on future career choice. Aim To explore the UG influences on GP career choice. METHODS: Two junior doctors produced a pragmatic rapid appraisal of the literature on the UG influences on GP career choice for the Wass Report...

Prenatal exposure to volatile organic compounds may restrict fetal development and adversely influence infants' life. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between prenatal exposure to total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and postnatal neurobehavioral development. A subsample of 383 pregnant participants was chosen from the prospective birth cohort study of Mother and Children's Environmental Health Study; MOCEH (N=1,751) from three regions of the Republic of Korea (Seoul, Cheon-an, and Ulsan). Participants were enrolled during their first trimester with informed consent...

BACKGROUND: Asian traditional herbal preparations are frequently considered for the contamination with undeclared toxic or hazardous substances. The aim of this study was to determine the toxic heavy metals, pesticides and sulfur dioxide in decoctions that is a common form of final utilization in Korea. METHODS: A total of 155 decoctions composed of multi-ingredient traditional herbs were randomly sampled from Seoul in Korea between 2013 and 2014. For each decoction, the concentrations of four heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury), 33 pesticides and sulfur dioxide were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), mercury analyzer, gas chromatography/nitrogen phosphorous detector (GC/NPD), gas chromatography/micro electron capture detector (GC/μECD), and Monier-Williams method respectively...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the comparative treatment effects of ultrasound-guided pulsed radiofrequency treatment (UG-PRF) in the gastrocnemius interfascial space and ultrasound-guided interfascial injection (UG-INJ) on myofascial pain syndrome. METHODS: Forty consecutive patients with myofascial pain syndrome of the gastrocnemius were enrolled and were allocated to one of the two groups. Twenty patients were treated by UG-PRF delivered to the gastrocnemius interfascial space (UG-PRF group) and the other 20 patients were treated by interfascial injection (UG-INJ group)...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Ischemic colitis includes a wide clinical spectrum ranging from mild to severe forms. This study aimed to determine the factors that are related to the occurrence of severe ischemic colitis. METHODS: This multicenter study was conducted retrospectively in Korea. The patients were divided into mild and severe groups. This study surveyed clinical characteristics, blood tests, endoscopic findings, and imaging studies. RESULTS: In the comparison of comorbidities, the severe group had a higher ratio of chronic kidney disease than the mild group (p=0...

PURPOSE: Functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) and myocardial dyssynchrony commonly occur in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The aim of this study was to elucidate changes in FMR in relation to those in left ventricular (LV) dyssynchrony as well as geometric parameters of the mitral valve (MV) in DCM patients during dobutamine infusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine DCM patients (M:F=15:14; age: 62±15 yrs) with FMR underwent echocardiography at baseline and during peak dose (30 or 40 ug/min) of dobutamine infusion...

For the first nationwide representative survey on the environmental health of children and adolescents in Korea, we designed the Korean Environmental Health Survey in Children and Adolescents (KorEHS-C) as a two-phase survey and planned a sampling strategy that would represent the whole population of Korean children and adolescents, based on the school unit for the 6-19 years age group and the household unit for the 5 years or less age group. A pilot study for 351 children and adolescents aged 6 to 19 years in elementary, middle, and high school of two cities was performed to validate several measurement methods and tools, as well as to test their feasibility, and to elaborate the protocols used throughout the survey process...

An adenosquamous carcinoma is a malignancy that has both glandular and squamous histologic components. Both components are malignant and have potential to metastasize. An adenosquamous carcinoma of the large bowel is rare, and its clinicopathologic behavior is not fully understood. It is reported to be more aggressive and have a worse prognosis when it is compared with an adenocarcinoma alone. We present a case of an adenosquamous carcinoma in the ascending colon which was laparoscopically resected and followed by adjuvant chemotherapy...

AIM:   Conventional endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of carcinoid tumors is often associated with involvement of the resection margin, which necessitates further intervention. Endoscopic submucosal resection with a ligation device (ESMR-L) is a novel technique for the removal of carcinoid tumors. The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical usefulness of endoscopic submucosal resection with a ligation device with that of EMR for the complete resection of rectal carcinoid tumors...

Hepatic lymphangioma is a rare benign neoplasm. It usually occurs as a part of systemic lymphangiomatosis. Isolated hepatic lymphangioma is extremely rare. A 58-year-old woman with weight loss was referred for the evaluation of chronic renal insufficiency and hepatic mass. Abdominal computed tomography showed 3 cm sized multilobulated cystic lesion with calcification and thick septal enhancing focus in the segment V of the liver. On abdominal magnetic resonance imaging, the masses exhibited low signal intensity on the T1-weighted images and high signal intensity on the T2-weighted images...

BACKGROUND: We investigated the relationship among socioeconomic status factors, the risk of anemia, and iron deficiency among school-aged children in Korea. METHODS: The sample consisted of fourth-grade students aged 10 y recruited from nine elementary schools in Korean urban areas in 2008 (n = 717). Anthropometric and blood biochemistry data were obtained for this cross-sectional observational study. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin levels lower than 11.5 g/dl...

Lung cancer is recently regarded as an overhealed inflammatory disease. Serum amyloid A (SAA) is known as an acute phase protein, but it is likely involved in the cancer pathogenesis. We identified both SAA1 and SAA2 in the pooled sera of lung cancer patients but not in the healthy control, by LC-MS/MS analysis. We found that about 14-fold higher levels of SAA in lung cancer patients' sera and plasma compared to healthy controls by ELISA using total 350 samples (13.89 ± 37.18 vs 190.49 ± 234.70 ug/mL). The SAA levels were also significantly higher than in other pulmonary disease or other cancers...

INTRODUCTION: Ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas has recently been suggested to arise from histologically identifiable ductal lesions known as pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanINs). Altered levels and patterns of mucin gene expression have been reported to occur in epithelial cancers. AIM: To examine the pattern of expression of membrane-associated mucins, MUC3 and MUC4, and a mucin-associated carbohydrate tumor antigen, sialyl Le(x), in these precursor lesions and ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: It has recently been suggested that infiltrating adenocarcinoma of the pancreas arises from histologically well-defined precursor ductal lesions called pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN-1A, -1B, -2, and -3). This study examined alterations in the pattern and the level of expression of several mucin genes (MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC6) and mucin-associated tumor antigens (Nd2 and sialyl Tn) in these precursor lesions. METHODS: We examined 139 PanINs and 68 infiltrating ductal adenocarcinomas of the pancreas by using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization methods...
