BACKGROUND: Blocking the binding between the PD-1 and PD-L1 has been reported to produce antitumor responses. The MET/HGF axis appears to be another signaling pathway frequently altered in small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Our study was aimed to investigate the expression and prognostic roles of PD-L1 and c-MET in SCLC. METHODS: The expression levels of PD-L1 and c-MET were evaluated by immunohistochemical analysis in 83 SCLC specimens. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method...

In this systematic review, we evaluated the value of serum concentrations of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) in order to clarify the possible role of NSE in the diagnosis, management, treatment and monitoring of PCa. A comprehensive search of the recent literature was conducted to find relevant data on the role of NSE in PCa. Two hundred and eighty-two records were revealed, and 19 articles including 1,772 patients with PCa (either confirmed or suspected) were selected. After reviewing the articles, the major result was that elevated serum NSE appears to correlate with prognosis in advanced PCa, particularly in patients with progressive and metastatic castration-resistant PCa...

INTRODUCTION: Malignant primary brain tumors are one of the most aggressive cancers. Pretreatment serum nonneuronal biomarkers closely associated with postoperative outcomes are of high clinical relevance. The present study aimed to identify potential pretreatment serum biomarkers that may influence oncological outcomes in patients with primary brain tumors. METHODS: A total of 74 patients undergoing supratentorial primary brain tumor resection were enrolled. Before tumor resection, serum neuronal biomarkers, namely neuron-specific enolase (NSE), S100β, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and serum nonneuronal biomarkers, namely neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and lactate, were measured and associated postoperative oncological outcomes, including brain tumor grading, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS), were compared...

First-generation epithelial growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) have markedly improved the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (non-SCLC) with EGFR-sensitive mutations. However, acquired resistance to these drugs was inevitable. The transformation of lung adenocarcinoma to SCLC following treatment with EGFR-TKIs is a rare phenomenon that contributes to resistance to EGFR-TKIs. The present case concerns a 74-year-old man previously diagnosed with and treated for pneumonia; however, this was later pathologically confirmed as lung adenocarcinoma by transbronchial lung biopsy...

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) may increase lung cancer risk, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. This study explored the potential carcinogenicity in rat lung induced by chronic exposure to PM2.5. Adult male rats (200-220 g) were treated with PM2.5 (10 mg/kg body weight) by tracheal perfusion once per week for 1 year; the rats were killed, and expression of tumor markers (carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA)), cancer-related genes, and pathological changes were detected...

Tumor markers are beneficial for the diagnosis and therapy monitoring of lung cancer. However, the value of tumor markers in lung cancer histological diagnosis is unknown. In this study, we analyzed the serum levels of six tumor markers (CEA, CYFRA21-1, SCC, NSE, ProGRP, and CA125) in 2097 suspected patients with lung cancer and determined whether the combination of the tumor markers was useful for histological diagnosis of lung cancer. We found that CYFRA21-1 was the most sensitive marker in NSCLC. ProGRP showed a better clinical performance than that of NSE in discriminating between SCLC and NSCLC...

Low Dosage Computerized Tomography (LDCT) has been shown to improve early detection of lung cancer and mortality rates in high-risk individuals, which was, however, limited by specifically coverage for heavy smokers and high rates of false positivity. Here, we aim to investigate a novel biomarker for early detection of lung cancer, and further extend to concentrate high-risk subjects for increasing specificity and coverage of LDCT. We performed retrospective blinded evaluation of lung cancer and healthy controls in training and validation cohorts...

In this study, we investigated the role of C3orf21 gene polymorphism at the rs2131877 locus and its contribution to lung adenocarcinoma pathogenesis. Normal lung and tumor tissue sections were collected from fifteen patients with lung adenocarcinoma for chromosome 3 open reading frame 21 (C3orf21) genotype analysis. In addition, a retrospective analysis was performed to assess the association between C3orf21 genotype and tumor markers from patient samples used in our previously published study. In parallel, we also manipulated C3orf21 gene expression either by overexpressing or ablating it in a MSTO-211H human lung cancer cell line to further understand its contribution to cell proliferation, apoptosis and migration...
