BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the application value of serum cytokeratin 19 fragment (CYFRA21-1) combined with nerve-specific enolase (NSE), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag) in the diagnosis of lung cancer (LC). METHODS: A total of 831 cases of LC, 360 cases of benign lung disease (BLD) and 102 healthy controls, were enrolled. The data were processed using SPSS, GraphPad Prism, and MedCalc software. RESULTS: The tumor marker (TM) levels in the LC and BLD groups were significantly higher than those in the control group; the CYFRA21-1, NSE, and CEA levels in the patients with LC were higher than in those with BLD...

INTRODUCTION: Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), a rare malignancy, requires early diagnosis for optimal patient outcomes. An important aspect of MTC diagnosis is the assessment of serum biomarkers. This review aimed to evaluate the use of serum biomarkers in the diagnosis, prognosis, and follow-up of MTC. METHODS: A thorough search of PubMed covering 1975 to 2022 was conducted to identify English-language articles on MTC serum biomarkers. RESULTS: The review revealed that calcitonin (Ctn) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) remain the most important serum biomarkers for MTC diagnosis and management...

Objective: Human endogenous retrovirus-H long terminal repeat associating 2 (HHLA2) is a new immune checkpoint in the B7 family, and the value of HHLA2 in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is unknown. Methods: We retrospectively detected HHLA2 expression by immunohistochemistry in SCLC patients. Moreover, plasma biomarkers of SCLC were detected retrospectively. Results: Seventy-four percent of SCLC patients exhibited HHLA2 expression. HHLA2 staining was localised within the nucleus of SCLC cells, while no staining was detected in normal lung tissue specimens...

BACKGROUND: Combining multiple tumor markers increases sensitivity for lung cancer diagnosis in the cost of false positive. However, some would like to check as many as tumor markers in the fear of missing cancer. We though to propose a panel of fewer tumor markers for lung cancer diagnosis. METHODS: Patients with suspected lung cancer who simultaneously underwent all six tests [carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), cytokeratin-19 fragment (CYFRA), squamous cell carcinoma-associated antigen (SCC), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), pro-gastrin-releasing peptide (ProGRP), and sialyl Lewis-X antigen (SLX)] were included...

MicroRNAs are small RNA molecules that have a significant role in translational repression and gene silencing through binding to downstream target mRNAs. MiR-762 can stimulate the proliferation and metastasis of various types of cancer. Hippo pathway is one of the pathways that regulate tissue development and carcinogenesis. Dysregulation of this pathway plays a vital role in the progression of cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the possible correlation between miR-762, the Hippo signaling pathway, TWIST1, and SMAD3 in patients with lung cancer, as well as patients with chronic inflammatory diseases...

In this work, a highly sensitive lung cancer biomarkers detection probe was developed based on Ag and MXene co-functionalized magnetic microspheres. By using carboxyl magnetic microspheres as carrier, MXene was coated repeatedly by Poly (allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) as interlayer adhesive, and silver particles grown on the surface of MXene in situ can efficiently improve the sensitivity of the probe. The detection of neuron specific enolase (NSE) is mainly through the formation of a specific complex between NSE antigen and antibody, and the release of antibody labeled with amino carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from the surface of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs), so that the fluorescence is restored and "OFF-ON" is formed...

Cancer testis antigen (CTA) Melanoma Antigen Gene A3 (MAGEA3) were overexpressed in multiple tumor types, but the expression pattern of MAGEA3 in the serum of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains unclear. Clinically derived serum and serum exosome samples were used to assess the mRNA expression of MAGEA3 and MAGEA4 by qRT-PCR, and serum MAGEA3 and MAGEA4 protein expression were evaluated by ELISA in total 133 healthy volunteers' and 289 LUAD patients' serum samples. An analysis of the relationship of the mRNA and protein expression of MAGEA3 and MAGEA4 with clinicopathologic parameters was performed and the diagnostic value of MAGEA3 and MAGEA4 was plotted on an ROC curve...

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer ranks first among malignant tumors worldwide and is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in both men and women. Combining tumor marker testing is a strategy to screen individuals at high risk of pulmonary cancer and minimize pulmonary cancer mortality. Therefore, tumor marker screening is crucial. In this study, we analyzed combinations of tumor markers for lung cancer screening using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted on patients diagnosed with lung cancer, as well as healthy and benign lung diseases, using data from the China Huludao Central Hospital database between January 2016 and July 2022...

BACKGROUND: Tumor markers (TMs) are a heterogeneous group of molecules used in the diagnosis, prognosis and follow-up of cancer patients. During neoplastic differentiation, cells can either directly synthesize or induce the synthesis of TMs, and the release of these molecules into the bloodstream allows their quantification in biological fluids. Although very small concentrations of TMs are usually present in the serum or plasma of healthy subjects, increased concentrations may also be found in the presence of benign diseases or due to technical interference, producing false positive results...

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) accounts for 10-15% of cases and has an overall 5-years survival rate of only 15%. Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) has been identified as a useful biomarker for early SCLC diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring. This work reports an electrochemical immunosensing platform based on a graphene-graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) nanocomposite for ultrasensitive NSE detection. The g-C3 N4 nanosheets and graphene nanosheets were synthesized via liquid exfoliation and integrated through self-assembly to form the nanocomposite...

We conducted a high-content screening (HCS) in neuroblastoma BE(2)-C cells to identify cell cycle regulators that control cell differentiation using a library of siRNAs against cell cycle-regulatory genes. We discovered that knocking down expression of cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor 3 (CDKN3) showed the most potent effect in inducing neurite outgrowth, the morphological cell differentiation marker of neuroblastoma cells. We then demonstrated that CDKN3 knockdown increased expression of neuroblastoma molecular differentiation markers, neuron specific enolase (NSE), βIII-tubulin and growth associated protein 43 (GAP43)...
