We demonstrate a long-working-distance microscopic imaging of hidden objects in a turbid medium by use of an ultrafast optical Kerr gate (OKG). The results show that the working distance and the spatial resolution of the long-working-distance microscopic imaging system have been increased simultaneously compared with those of the conventional 4f OKG imaging systems. A compound lens consisting of a long-focus achromatic doublet and a microscope objective is used to increase the long working distance and ensure the sufficient spatial resolution...

Tubes are essential for nutrient transport and gas exchange in multicellular eukaryotes, but how connections between different tube types are maintained over time is unknown. In the Drosophila tracheal system, mutations in oak gall (okg) and conjoined (cnj) confer identical defects, including late onset blockage near the terminal cell-stalk cell junction and the ectopic extension of autocellular, seamed tubes into the terminal cell. We determined that okg and cnj encode the E and G subunits of the vacuolar ATPase (vATPase) and showed that both the V0 and V1 domains are required for terminal cell morphogenesis...

The introduction of new direct oral anticoagulants has changed the treatment of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. However, these changes are not yet fully reflected in current guidelines. This consensus statement, endorsed by six Austrian medical societies, provides guidance to current prophylactic approaches of thromboembolic events in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation on the basis of current evidence and published guidelines. Furthermore, some special subjects are treated, like changes in laboratory parameters and their interpretation under treatment with direct oral anticoagulants, treatment of bleedings, approach to operations, cardioversion and ablation, and specific neurological aspects...

We report on a Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) system with a very high temporal resolution, using femtosecond and picosecond pulse laser excitation of pure aluminum (Al). By using a 140 fs Ti:Sapphire laser in an ultrafast optical Kerr gate (OKG), we demonstrate LIBS sampling with a sub-ps time resolution (0.8 ± 0.08 ps) in a 14 ns window. The width of the gating window in this system was as narrow as 0.8 ps, owing to the inclusion of a carbon disulfide (CS(2)) cell, which has a fast response and a large nonlinear coefficient...

The effects of ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) on ammonium acetate induced hepatotoxicity were studied in experimental rats. The levels of urea, non-protein nitrogen and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were significantly increased in ammonium acetate treated rats; but these levels were significantly decreased in ammonium acetate-OKG treated rats. Similar patterns were observed in the levels of free fatty acids, triglycerides and phospholipids. Furthermore, non-enzymatic (reduced glutathione) and enzymatic (glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase) antioxidants were significantly decreased in ammonium acetate treated rats, when compared with control and were significantly increased in ammonium acetate-OKG treated rats compared to ammonium acetate treatment alone...

The controlled release of diclofenac sodium (DFNa) from a chitosan-oxidized konjac glucomannan (CTS-OKG) polymer film was studied. Konjac glucomannan (KGM) was initially oxidized by sodium periodate and then cross-linked to CTS via imine bonds (-C=N-) to form the new CTS-OKG copolymer. The DFNa loaded CTS-OKG polymers were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Finally, the release profiles of DFNa from the CTS-OKG polymer matrices were evaluated in a simulated gastrointestinal fluid system comprised of two hours in simulated gastric fluid (SGF; pH 1...

A new design of signal to noise ratio (SNR) measurement for single shot laser pulses, based on a stepped grating and an optical Kerr gate (OKG), is presented. A single shot laser pulse was simultaneously divided into multi-pulses in both time and space. Intensity-space distribution of laser multi-pulses, which was recorded with a CCD detector, was transformed into intensity-time distribution. Time resolution of 1.95 ps and detection time range of 42.9 ps were obtained, respectively. Moreover, optical spatial localization attenuators were introduced into optical path to acquire wide dynamic range in the SNR measurement and, as a result, the dynamic range has been extended remarkably...

Disorders of branched-chain amino/keto acid metabolism encompass diverse entities, including maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), the 'classical' organic acidurias isovaleric acidemia (IVA), propionic acidemia (PA), methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) and, among others, rarely described disorders such as 2-methylbutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MBDD) or isobutyryl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (IBDD). Our focus in this review is to highlight the biochemical basis underlying recent advances and ongoing challenges of long-term conservative therapy including precursor/protein restriction, replenishment of deficient substrates, and the use of antioxidants and anaplerotic agents which refill the Krebs cycle...

Our current knowledge on the causes of sarcopenia is still fragmentary. One of the most evident candidates to explain muscle loss in elderly includes imbalance in protein turnover, i.e. decreased muscle protein synthesis rate, notably in the post-prandial state. Nutritional strategies such as leucine supplementation, use of fast digested proteins or a pulse protein intake have been show to enhance the synthesis rate of muscle proteins in older individuals. Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) is a precursor of amino acids such as glutamine, arginine and proline, and increases the secretion of anabolic hormones, i...

Protein catabolism should be reduced and protein synthesis promoted with parenteral nutrion (PN). Amino acid (AA) solutions should always be infused with PN. Standard AA solutions are generally used, whereas specially adapted AA solutions may be required in certain conditions such as severe disorders of AA utilisation or in inborn errors of AA metabolism. An AA intake of 0.8 g/kg/day is generally recommended for adult patients with a normal metabolism, which may be increased to 1.2-1.5 g/kg/day, or to 2.0 or 2...

OBJECTIVE: Pressure ulcers affect predominantly the elderly and nutritional status is a known risk factor. Guidelines on pressure ulcers provide recommendation on nutritional management. Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) is an adjuvant treatment in undernourished elderly patients or in patients with hypercatabolism states. It is a precursor of different amino-acids which play a role in the process of healing. The objective of the study is to determine the efficacy of OKG on pressure ulcer area reduction after six weeks of treatment...

We demonstrated the selection of the chirped supercontinuum using an ultrafast optical Kerr gate (OKG) of lead phthalocyanine (PbPc)- doped hybrid glasses. Using the OKG, narrow bandwidth and symmetrical gated spectra were obtained continuously from the chirped supercontinuum generated in a sapphire plate with a femtosecond laser. Experimental results show that the obtained Kerr-gated spectra using the PbPc-glass have many advantages comparing with that using CS(2).

We propose a system for three-dimensional (3D) shape measurement of a diffusing surface by use of a previously developed femtosecond amplifying optical Kerr gate (fs-amp OKG). The system has an opening time of 459 fs and a maximum transmittance of 185%. It also provides good 3D imaging performance: a transverse imaging resolution of 70 microm, a depth resolution of 100 microm, and a positioning accuracy of 5.9 microm in depth. It is found that the optical Kerr effect and the amplification process in the fs-amp OKG do not cause the quality of a time-resolved image to deteriorate...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) is recognized to improve nutritional status in various catabolic states, such as burn injury, trauma, and sepsis. However, in wasting diseases, such as induced by cancer, the data are scarce and the precise mechanisms by which OKG acts on protein metabolism are still unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of OKG to affect protein metabolism in an aggressive model of cancer and to modulate the ubiquitin-proteasome-dependent pathway, which in skeletal muscle is the critical degradative pathway implicated in many catabolic states, including cancer-associated cachexia...
