REVIEW
Girish P Joshi, Henrik Kehlet
The use of gabapentinoids for perioperative pain management after total knee arthroplasty has been the subject of nine systematic reviews and meta-analyses. A critical analysis of the clinical aspects of the methodology of these publications shows major flaws which limit the interpretation for the recommended use of perioperative gabapentinoids in pain management for unilateral primary total knee arthroplasty. Consequently, readers and authors of systematic reviews and meta-analyses should critically assess the clinical aspects of the included studies...

BACKGROUND: Dentistry is predominantly provided in a commercial context in Australia. Despite this, little is known about how dentists navigate potential tensions that may arise between commercial and professional obligations in private dental practice. This analysis uses a qualitative approach to explore dentists' perceptions and attitudes toward the commercialized nature of private dental practice and how these affect their professional role in providing care. METHODS: Participants were recruited by advertising on social media, as well as through a professional association and a corporate dental group's graduate training program...

We assessed the presence of immortal time bias (ITB) in observational studies evaluating the effectiveness of radiofrequency catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF) on stroke reduction. Eligible studies were classified based on presence or absence of ITB. Hazard ratios were pooled using the random effects model. Eight of 10 (80%) studies were subject to ITB. Pooling studies without ITB indicated no statistically significant reduction in incident strokes [HR 0.75 (95% CI 0.49-1.02]. In conclusion, the pervasiveness of ITB in observational studies precludes definitive conclusions regarding an effect of AF ablation on strokes...

INTRODUCTION: There still remains a gap between those who conduct science and those who engage in educating others about health sciences through various forms of social media. Few empirical studies have sought to define useful practices for engaging in social media for academic use in the health professions. Given the increasing importance of these platforms, we sought to define good practices and potential pitfalls with help of those respected for their work in this new field. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study, guided by constructivist grounded theory principles, of 17 emerging experts in the field of academic social media...

Over 60% of women presenting for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) have coexisting chronic kidney disease (CKD). In women undergoing TAVR, CKD was associated with significantly higher rates of adverse events, including a twofold higher rate of risk-adjusted mortality at 1 year. This study is an important step forward in our understanding of risk stratification in women with CKD undergoing TAVR and suggests that measures to optimize outcomes warrant further investigation in this high-risk group of patients...

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic codes from electronic health records are widely used to assess patterns of disease. Infective endocarditis is an uncommon but serious infection, with objective diagnostic criteria. Electronic health records have been used to explore the impact of changing guidance on antibiotic prophylaxis for dental procedures on incidence, but limited data on the accuracy of the diagnostic codes exists. Endocarditis was used as a clinically relevant case study to investigate the relationship between clinical cases and diagnostic codes, to understand discrepancies and to improve design of future studies...

Copper is an essential trace element micronutrient in human and animal nutrition. Trace amounts present even in ultrapure water, serum and other cell culture medium components are sufficient to support the health requirements of most cell types in culture. Analysis of a variety of different types of basal media from a number of different suppliers revealed large fluctuations in the levels of copper, and also of other micronutrients including zinc, iron, selenium and cobalt. Investigations on proliferating Caco-2 cells revealed reductions in growth with increasing copper concentrations within the range seen in the commercial media and changes in expression of apoptosis- and autophagy-related proteins were noted...

The name predatory publisher has been applied by academic librarian Jeffrey Beall to describe an open-access, scholarly publishing business model in which publication fees are charged to authors without providing the editorial judgment, peer-review process, and publishing services associated with more established journals. In the addiction field, as many as 20 journal titles now operate according to this model, and most of their editors are either nonexistent or impossible to contact. Although predatory publishing should not be equated with open access, this article argues that predatory publishers are diluting scientific quality in the addiction field by taking advantage of the open-access movement...
