Abdominoperineal resections for rectal cancer are being performed with decreasing frequency in favour of sphincter-saving resections. It remains to be demonstrated that sphincter preservation has not resulted in compromised local disease control, disease-free survival and survival. For this purpose 315 patients with rectal carcinoma have been studied. In 44 cases (13.9%) it was only possible to perform a colostomy; a curative resection has been carried out in 206 (65.3%).
