Many assessment and diagnosis protocols in rehabilitation, orthopedic surgery and sports medicine rely on mobility tests like the Single Leg Squat (SLS). In this study, a set of three Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) were used to estimate the joint pose during SLS and to classify the SLS as poor, moderate or good. An Extended Kalman Filter pose estimation method was used to estimate kinematic joint variables, and time domain features were generated based on these variables. The most important features were then selected and used to train Support Vector Machine (SVM), Linear Multinomial Logistic Regression, and Decision Tree classifiers...

People with chronic arm impairment should exercise intensely at home after completing their clinical rehabilitation program, but frequently lack motivation. To address this issue, we present a home rehabilitation system that motivates patients by allowing them to perform arm exercises together with friends or relatives in competitive and cooperative games. Inertial sensors are used to track the patient's arm and control the game. The system was tested with seven adults with arm impairment as well as their friends or spouses...

Poor adherence to health-related behaviors can have serious health consequences. Cardiac rehabilitation has been documented to have physiological and psychosocial benefits; however, optimizing adherence to exercise in patients with cardiovascular disease is a particular challenge. We recently completed a large, 6-year randomized trial of exercise training in elderly patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) disease (50-85 years), which provided an opportunity to describe adherence strategies in this unique group of elderly individuals...

Clara Haskil (January 7, 1895-December 7, 1960) was one of the most famous female pianists of the 20th century. In her life and work she set new standards in piano playing. However, her career was beset by poor health and the adversities of two world wars. In her lifetime Haskil had three major disorders: juvenile scoliosis requiring treatment in her adolescence, a tumor of the sellar region requiring surgery at age 47 years, and a traumatic brain injury causing her death at the age of 65. Her medical history illustrates the development of surgical methods and rehabilitation in medicine before and after World War II...

PURPOSE: Patient-specific musculoskeletal biomechanical simulation is useful in preoperative surgical planning and postoperative assessment in orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation medicine. A difficulty in application of the patient-specific musculoskeletal modeling comes from the fact that the muscle attachment regions are typically invisible in CT and MRI. Our purpose is to develop a method for estimating patient-specific muscle attachment regions from 3D medical images and to validate with cadaver experiments...

BACKGROUND: Work-related injuries of the shoulder complex represent a challenge for clinicians because of the large variety of clinical entities involved and the broad anatomic structures that can be affected. Furthermore, commonly performed orthopedic tests have demonstrated limited accuracy for diagnosing the injury despite considerable research efforts. The aim of this study protocol is therefore to describe a comprehensive approach integrating both a clinical- and functional status-based pathology and an adapted rehabilitation prescription...

REVIEW
Michael P Clare, William S Crawford
Calcaneus fractures remain among the most complicated fractures for orthopedic surgeons to manage because of the complexity of various fracture patterns, the limited surrounding soft tissue envelope, and the prolonged rehabilitation issues impacting function after successful treatment. Despite this, appropriate management of complications associated with calcaneus fractures is critical for the complete care of this injury, whether treated operatively or nonoperatively. The authors present the common complications encountered with fractures of the calcaneus and management thereof...

INTRODUCTION: Although fracture diaphyseal femur is commonly seen in orthopedic practice, its association with ipsilateral resection arthroplasty of hip/pseudarthrosis of neck is rare. The technique of excision arthroplasty has undergone modification with emphasis on preserving as much bone as possible. However, it is not always possible to preserve bone while removing the earlier prosthesis and cement. This often leads to extensive proximal bone loss. Associated ipsilateral fracture femur presents a unique scenario...

Importance: Low back pain (LBP) in children and adolescents is a common problem. The differential diagnosis of LBP in this population is broad and different from that seen in the adult population. Most causes of LBP are musculoskeletal and benign in their clinical course. Clinicians should have an understanding of the relevant anatomy and the most commonly encountered etiologic factors of LBP in children and adolescents to provide effective care. Observations: Low back pain is rarely seen in youth before they reach school age...

BACKGROUND: Biomechanical interpretations of bone adaptation in biological reconstructions following bone tumors would be crucial for orthopedic oncologists, particularly if based on quantitative observations. This would help plan for surgical treatments, rehabilitative programs and communication with the patients. We aimed to analyze the biomechanical adaptation of a femoral reconstruction after Ewing sarcoma according to an increasingly-used surgical technique, and to relate in-progress bone resorption to the mechanical stimulus induced by different motor activities...

The paradigm of simultaneous and proportional myocontrol of hand prostheses is gaining momentum in the rehabilitation robotics community. As opposed to the traditional surface electromyography classification schema, in simultaneous and proportional control the desired force/torque at each degree of freedom of the hand/wrist is predicted in real-time, giving to the individual a more natural experience, reducing the cognitive effort and improving his dexterity in daily-life activities. In this study we apply such an approach in a realistic manipulation scenario, using ten non-linear incremental regression machines to predict the desired torques for each motor of two robotic hands...

BACKGROUND: Reducing the disease burden of major depressive disorder (MDD) is of major public health relevance. The prevention of depression is regarded as one possible approach to reach this goal. People with multiple risk factors for MDD such as chronic back pain and subthreshold depressive symptoms may benefit most from preventive measures. The Internet as intervention setting allows for scaling up preventive interventions on a public mental health level. METHODS: This study is a multicenter pragmatic randomized controlled trial (RCT) of parallel design aiming to investigate the (cost-) effectiveness of an Internet- and mobile-based intervention (IMI) for the prevention of depression in chronic back pain patients (PROD-BP) with subthreshold depressive symptoms...
