During sexual intercourse, HIV-1 crosses epithelial barriers composing the genital mucosa, a poorly understood feature that requires an HIV-1-infected cell vectoring efficient mucosal HIV-1 entry. Therefore, urethral mucosa comprising a polarized epithelium and a stroma composed of fibroblasts and macrophages were reconstructed in vitro. Using this system, we demonstrate by live imaging that efficient HIV-1 transmission to stromal macrophages depends on cell-mediated transfer of the virus through virological synapses formed between HIV-1-infected CD4+ T cells and the epithelial cell mucosal surface...

BACKGROUND: Definite diagnosis of metastasis from unknown primary depends on a comprehensive immunohistochemical investigation of tumor specimen. Accurate identification of the origin site usually helps a lot in choosing the most appropriate treatment. Molecular characterization provides more chance of a cure. Echoing modern medical development, BRCA1/2 mutations have been correlated with high efficiency of poly(adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase inhibitors in ovarian cancer. While a previous case report demonstrated a surprising cure of platinum-resistant ovarian cancer with BRCA2 mutation by orally administered melphalan...

We report the case of a 26-year-old woman with a right auto-amputated adnexa and a free- floating mass in the pouch of Douglas using multimodal imaging studies including ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The absence of an ovary and the evidence of an amorphous and potentially calcified mass, with no connection to the genital tract - in particular when it is found to be mobile - are the key imaging findings. Prospective diagnosis of adnexal auto-amputation could assist surgeons in patient management with a curative laparoscopy in symptomatic women, or potentially expectant management in young women who are asymptomatic or have unrelated symptoms...

INTRODUCTION: The usefulness of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) gas digital subtraction angiography (DSA) has been reported for patients with renal insufficiency and allergy to iodinated contrast agents. However, CO2 gas cannot replace the iodinated contrast agent in all cases owing to some disadvantages. We describe balloon-occluded CO2 DSA (B-CO2 DSA) as an improved CO2 DSA procedure for interventions in the internal iliac artery (IIA) region and compare the quality of images obtained using conventional CO2 DSA and B-CO2 DSA...

Despite its highly prevalent and stigmatizing nature, genital herpes has received little attention from stigma researchers relative to other sexually transmitted infections. This limitation is of great relevance to researchers and practitioners in both clinical and healthcare settings, given that stigma can cause psychological distress and hinder disclosure to sexual partners, hence contributing to the spread of genital herpes. The present research developed and examined the psychometric properties of a quantitative measure of genital herpes stigma...

Xanthogranulomatous inflammation of female genital tract is uncommon and is usually seen in endometrium. Only a few cases involving the ovary have been reported. Its clinical manifestations, imaging modalities, and gross features can mimic ovarian malignancy. Thus, a preoperative diagnosis of this entity is important to avoid radical surgical treatment. We report a case of xanthogranulomatous oophoritis in a 24 years female, which was clinically and radiologically misdiagnosed as ovarian neoplasm. The approach to such a case and the differential diagnosis has also been discussed...

Indicated to manage a variety of disorders affecting the female genital tract, hysterectomy represents the second most common gynaecological operation after caesarean section. Performed via an open, laparoscopic or vaginal approach, hysterectomy is associated with non-negligible morbidity and occasional mortality. Iatrogenic complications represent a growing concern for gynaecologists and may result in prolonged hospitalisation, need for interventional procedures or repeated surgery, renal impairment and malpractice claims...

Primary nasal canine transmissible venereal tumor (CTVT) without genital affection is uncommon. The aim of this report was to describe the primary nasal CTVT findings and CT staging in 4 dogs with different cytological phenotypes. Three male dogs and 1 bitch were evaluated for their chronic histories of sneezing, snoring, mucopurulent nasal discharge and nasal deformation. Cytological examination of nasal secretions suggested CTVT, confirmed by histopathological examination and LINE-1/c-myc. Males had the plasmacytoid phenotype of CTVT, and the bitch had the lymphocytoid phenotype...

Congenital imperforate hymen is probably the most common obstructive anomaly of the female reproductive tract. The accumulation of fluid in the genital tract leads to a distended uterus and vagina, causing hydrometrocolpos. Prenatal diagnosis of fetal hydrometrocolpos is uncommon, with only 22 cases reported in the literature and only a few cases of prenatal imaging of this condition available to date. The main ultrasound finding is a fetal pelvic mass posterior to the bladder and anterior to the rectum. We present the case of a 37-week female fetus with a fetal pelvic mass detected in a routine obstetric ultrasound examination, and the correlation between the prenatal and postnatal findings...

Large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the endometrium is an extremely rare, high-grade malignant tumor. We herein report a case of a rapidly growing LCNEC arising in the endometrium. A 52-year-old woman was referred to Toyooka Hospital (Tooyoka, Japan) due to genital bleeding in February 2016. There had been no abnormalities on a regular gynecological and physical examination 3 months prior to the consultation. Imaging (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) and a pelvic examination revealed a tumor sized 16...

Purpose of Review: The purpose of this review was to explore current research on the impact of migration on issues related to female genital cutting and sexuality. Recent Findings: There is growing evidence that migration results in a broad opposition to female genital cutting among concerned migrant groups in western countries. In addition, after migration, affected women live in the midst of a dominant discourse categorizing them as "mutilated" and sexually disfigured...
