The use of cephalosporins during breast feeding raises several issues, including the risk of drug exposure through breast milk for the infant. In this article a hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography/ positive ion electrospray mass spectrometric assay (HILIC/ESI-MS) was developed for the quantitation of cefuroxime, cefoxitin and cefazolin in breast milk and human plasma. The assay was based on the use of small sample size, 25 μL of biological samples, following acetonitrile precipitation of proteins and filtration that enabled injection into the HILIC/ESI-MS system...

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the most common disease in elderly men. BPH symptoms include frequent urination, urgent tenesmus and urination at night, a weak and interrupted urine flow and a sense of incomplete emptying of the bladder. Alpha- 1 adrenergic receptor antagonists and 5 α-reductase inhibitors form the most important groups of medications employed in BPH. Appropriately managed BPH patients shall be subject to counselling on interactions between agents belonging to these groups, and on particular components of the food they have...

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a chronic condition common in older men that can result in bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms. The molecular mechanisms and networks underlying the development and the progression of the disease are still far from being fully understood. BPH results from smooth muscle cell and epithelial cell proliferation, primarily within the transition zone of the prostate. Apoptosis and inflammation play important roles in the control of cell growth and in the maintenance of tissue homeostasis...

OBJECTIVES: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common and progressive disease affecting elderly males, often associated with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). α1-blockers are the mainstay in symptomatic therapy of BPH. Because of their greater uroselectivity and minimal hemodynamic effects, alfuzosin, tamsulosin, and silodosin are generally preferred. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of alfuzosin, tamsulosin, and silodosin in patients with BPH and LUTS...

BACKGROUND: Some α1 -adrenoceptor antagonists possess anti-cancer actions that are independent of α1 -adrenoceptors and the aim of these studies was to assess the relative cytotoxic potencies of α1 -adrenoceptor antagonists and the mechanisms involved in these actions. METHODS: PC-3 and LNCap human prostate cancer cells were exposed to α1 -adrenoceptor antagonists (0.01-100 μM) and cell survival assessed after 24-72 hr. The levels of apoptosis, autophagy and stress related proteins were also determined...

α1-adrenergic receptors blockers (ABs) are recommended as first-line medical therapy in men with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms suggestive of Benign Prostatic Enlargement (LUTS/BPE). Available ABs include: terazosin, doxazosin, tamsulosin, naftopidil, alfuzosin and silodosin. These agents have different profiles of selectivity for α1-adrenergic receptors subtypes. All these agents are efficacious in improving both storage and voiding LUTS. In recent years the efficacy of ABs in improving urodynamic parameters of bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) has been questioned...

Column selection systems based on calculation of a scalar measure based on Euclidean distance between chromatographic columns, suffer from the same issue. For diverse values of their parameters, identical or near-identical values can be calculated. Proper use of chemometric methods can not only provide a remedy, but also reveal underlying correlation between them. In this work, parameters of a well-established column selection system (CSS) developed at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL CSS) have been directly correlated to parameters of selectivity (retention time, resolution, and peak/valley ratio) toward pharmaceuticals, by employing Partial Least Squares (PLS)...

BACKGROUND: Alfuzosin has been widely used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis, and is claimed to be a selective agent for the lower urinary tract with low incidence of adverse side-effects and hypotensive changes. Recently, several randomized controlled trials have reported using Alfuzosin as an expulsive therapy of ureteral stones. Tamsulosin, another alpha blocker, has also been used as an agent for the expulsive therapy for ureteral stones. It is unclear whether alfuzosin has similar efficacy as Tamsulosin in the management of ureteral stones...
