The synthesis of atomically precise gold nanoclusters with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) in the near-infrared (NIR) region and understanding their photoluminescence mechanism are crucial for both fundamental science and practical applications. Herein, we report a highly luminescent, molecularly pure Au39 (PET)29 (PET = 2-phenylethanethiolate) nanocluster with PLQY of 19% in the NIR range (915 nm). Steady state and time-resolved PL analyses, as well as temperature-dependent PL measurements reveal the emission nature of Au39 (PET)29 , which consists of prompt fluorescence (weak), thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and phosphorescence (predominant)...

The combination of photothermal therapy and chemotherapy has emerged as a promising strategy to improve cancer therapeutic efficacy. However, developing a versatile nanoplatform that simultaneously possesses commendable photothermal effect and high drug encapsulation efficiency remains a challenging problem yet to be addressed. Herein, we report a facile supramolecular self-assembly strategy to construct gold nanoparticle clusters (AuNCs) for synergistic photothermal-chemo therapy. By utilizing the functional polysaccharide as a targeted ligand, hyaluronic acid-enriched AuNCs were endowed with targeting CD44 receptor overexpressed on the B16 cancer cells...

The abuse of olaquindox (OLA) as both an antimicrobial agent and a growth promoter poses significant threats to the environment and human health. While nanoreactors have proven effective in hazard detection, their widespread adoption has been hindered by tedious chemical processes and limited functionality. In this study, we introduce a novel green self-assembly strategy utilizing invertase, horseradish peroxidase, antibodies, and gold nanoclusters to form an aggregation-induced emission-type zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoreactor...

BACKGROUND: Highly toxic organophosphorus nerve agents often exist in the form of gas in the environment and can damage human neuroregulatory system by inhibiting the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). However, fluorescent probes based on small organic molecules bring a secondary burden to environment, and their sensitivity and specificity for sarin simulant diethyl chlorophosphate (DCP) detection are unsatisfactory. Nanozyme cascade systems with signal amplification can be used for highly sensitive identification of analytes, but are rarely used in ratiometric analysis of DCP...

Ligand-protected gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have become promising nanomaterials in fluorescence (FL) methods for mercury ions (Hg2+ ) monitoring, but low FL efficiency hinders their widespread application. Herein, AuNCs/cerium-based metal-organic frameworks (AuNCs/Ce-MOFs) were prepared by loading 6-aza-2-thiothymine-protected AuNCs (ATT-AuNCs) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect on the surface of Ce-MOFs by electrostatic attraction. This strategy improved the FL intensity of AuNCs through two aspects: (i) the AIE effect of ATT-AuNCs and (ii) the confinement effect of Ce-MOFs, which improved the restriction of intramolecular motion (RIM) of ATT-AuNCs...

Herein, 2-mercapto-5-benzimidazolesulfonate acid sodium salt dihydrate (MBZS)-protected gold-silver bimetallic nanoclusters, named MBZS-AuAg NCs, were synthesized. Interestingly, we found that MBZS-AuAg NCs solutions can exhibit different fluorescence color changes under sulfide stimulation. A series of modern analytical testing techniques were used to explore the interaction mechanism between MBZS-AuAg NCs and sulfide. Sulfide ions can not only cause MBZS-AuAg NCs to exhibit rich fluorescence color changes similar to those of a chameleon but also have four linear relationships between the response intensity and sulfide concentration...

Metal nanoclusters (MNCs) represent a promising class of materials for catalytic carbon dioxide and proton reduction as well as dihydrogen oxidation. In such reactions, multiple proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes are typically involved, and the current understanding of PCET mechanisms in MNCs has primarily focused on the sequential transfer mode. However, a concerted transfer pathway, i.e., concerted electron-proton transfer (CEPT), despite its potential for a higher catalytic rate and lower reaction barrier, still lacks comprehensive elucidation...

The sensor is designed to identify three critical metal ions, namely Cu2+ , Al3+ , and Hg2+ . Under 360 nm excitation, the synthesized CIP-BSA-GNCs demonstrate dual fluorescence emission with peaks at 448 nm (blue) and 612 nm (red). The red emission is associated with the interior of the CIP-BSA-GNCs, whereas the blue emission results from the surface-bound CIP molecules...

Sub-nanometer-sized gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) were prepared via the spontaneous reduction of [AuCl4 ]- - ions with a hydroxamate derivative of L -tryptophan (Trp) natural amino acid (TrpHA). The prepared TrpHA-Au NCs possess intense blue emission (λem = 470 nm; λex = 380 nm) with a 2.13% absolute quantum yield and 1.47 ns average lifetime. The Trp-stabilized noble metal NCs are excellent metal ion sensors for Fe3+ , but in this work, we highlighted that the incorporation of the hydroxamate functional group with an excellent metal ion binding capability can tune the selectivity and sensitivity of these NCs, which is a promising way to design novel strategies for the detection of other metal ions as well...

Gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) exhibit broad fluorescent spectra from visible to near-infrared regions and good enzyme-mimicking catalytic activities. Combined with excellent stability and exceptional biocompatibility, the Au NCs have been widely exploited in biomedicine such as biocatalysis and bioimaging. Especially, the long fluorescence lifetime and large Stokes shift attribute Au NCs to good probes for fluorescence sensing and biological detection. In this review, we systematically summarized the molecular structure and fluorescence properties of Au NCs and highlighted the advances in fluorescence sensing and biological detection...
