PURPOSE: The term 'keratoconus (KC) suspect' is used as a blanket term to refer to any deviation of virgin cornea shape toward KC features. We intend to subclassify such topographies in meaningful and informative designations. METHODS: Pentacam corneal topographies of 199 consecutive refractive surgery candidates (398 eyes) are examined. Features of steepness, inferior-superior asymmetry, focal steepening, thinning, and bounded anterior or posterior elevations are observed in the quad map...

PURPOSE: To assess the pseudophakic anterior chamber depth (PP-ACD) or effective lens position (ELP) change after cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX). METHODS: Consecutive eyes with PEX and cataract underwent standard phacoemulsification and were implanted with single-piece acrylic posterior chamber intraocular lenses (IOLs). Eyes with severe PEX and with axial length (AL) greater than 24 mm or less than 22 mm were not included. Eyes with capsular complication or unstable bags that needed capsular tension ring insertion were excluded...

PURPOSE: The perceived and reported pain of patients receiving photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) widely varies. We assessed the potential role of the subbasal nerve plexus density as a predictor of postoperative pain level. Consecutive patients scheduled to undergo PRK at the Refractive Surgery Clinic of Farabi Eye Hospital, Tehran, were approached. METHODS: Forty-nine myopic left eyes from 49 patients who consented to undergo scanning slit confocal microscopy assessments preoperatively were included...

AIM: A series of 2-benzylidene-benzofuran-3-ones were designed from the structures of Ebselen analogs and aurone derivatives and synthesized in good yields. MATERIALS & METHODS: The target compounds were prepared by the condensation reaction between appropriate benzofuranones with amino alkoxy aldehydes and evaluated as cholinesterase inhibitors by Ellman's method. RESULTS: The in vitro anti-acetylcholinesterase (AChE)/butyrylcholinesterase activities of the synthesized compounds revealed that 7e (IC50 = 0...

The present study was carried out to examine health promotion behaviour and its associated factors in seafarers of the National Iranian Tanker Company. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on 200 Iranian male seafarers in 2015. A self-administered socio-demographic and Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP-II) questionnaire was completed...

Zinc oxide nano-particles were synthesized, characterized and used for photocatalytic degradation of doxycycline using UV-C and visible light. Effects of several operational factors including initial pH of antibiotic solution, initial antibiotic concentration and ZnO nano-particles loading amount were investigated. Comparing photocatalytic degradation and mineralization of doxycycline under UV-C and visible light showed successful application of the method under both light sources. However, reaction rate was higher under UV-C irradiation, which degraded doxycycline almost completely in 5 hours, and 68% mineralization was achieved...

Prospective observational case control study, where 94 eyes of 47 warpage suspicious and 46 eyes of 23 keratoconic patients were included. Warpage suspected cases were followed until a definite diagnosis was made (warpage, normal, or keratoconus). Results. 44 eyes of 22 patients had contact lens related corneal warpage. 46 eyes of 23 people were diagnosed as nonwarpage normal eyes...

INTRODUCTION: Ruminant trans-fatty acids, especially cis9, trans11-conjugated linoleic acid (c9,t11-CLA) and trans11-18:1 vaccenic acid (t11-18:1 VA) appear to have anticarcinogenic activity against breast cancer in animal and in vitro experiments. However, the results remain inconsistent. We therefore conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the association of c9,t11-CLA, and t11-18:1 VA (intake or serum levels) with breast cancer risk. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Relevant studies were identified by a search of PubMed, OVID, SCOPUS and Google scholar databases through 25 May 2015...

BACKGROUND: Repeated efforts by researchers to impose voice changes by laryngeal surface electrical stimulation (SES) have come to no avail. This present pre-experimental study employed a novel method for SES application so as to evoke the motor potential of the internal superior laryngeal nerve (ISLN) and create voice changes. METHODS: Thirty-two normal individuals (22 females and 10 males) participated in this study. The subjects were selected from the students of Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2014...

BACKGROUND: A cluster of genes are involved in the pathogenesis and adhesion of Candida albicans to mucosa and epithelial cells in the vagina, the important of which is agglutinin-like sequence (ALS) genes. As well as vaginitis is a significant health problem among women, the antifungal resistance of Candida species is continually increasing. This cross-sectional study investigates the expression of ALS1 and ALS3 genes and biofilm formation in C. albicans isolate isolated from vaginitis...
