Understanding nanoparticle-cell interaction is essential for advancing research in nanomedicine and nanotoxicology. Apart from the transcytotic pathway mediated by cellular recognition and energetics, nanoparticles (including nanomedicines) may harness the paracellular route for their transport by inducing endothelial leakiness at cadherin junctions. This phenomenon, termed as NanoEL, is correlated with the physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles in close association with cellular signalling, membrane mechanics, as well as cytoskeletal remodelling...

The increased production of plastics is leading to the accumulation of plastic waste and depletion of limited fossil fuel resources. In this context, we report a strategy to create polymers that can undergo controlled depolymerization by linking renewable feedstocks with siloxane bonds. α,ω-Diesters and α,ω-diols containing siloxane bonds were synthesized from an alkenoic ester derived from castor oil and then polymerized with varied monomers, including related biobased monomers. In addition, cyclic monomers derived from this alkenoic ester and hydrosiloxanes were prepared and cyclized to form a 26-membered macrolactone containing a siloxane unit...

Visual cues are of critical importance for the attraction of animal pollinators, however, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underpinning intraspecific floral colour variation. Here, we combined comparative spectral analysis, targeted metabolite profiling, multi-tissue transcriptomics, differential gene expression, sequence analysis and functional analysis to investigate a bee-pollinated orchid species, Glossodia major with common purple- and infrequent white-flowered morphs. We found uncommon and previously unreported delphinidin-based anthocyanins responsible for the conspicuous and pollinator-perceivable colour of the purple morph and three genetic changes underpinning the loss of colour in the white morph - (1) a loss-of-function (LOF; frameshift) mutation affecting dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR1) coding sequence due to a unique 4-bp insertion, (2) specific downregulation of functional DFR1 expression and (3) the unexpected discovery of chimeric Gypsy transposable element (TE)-gene (DFR) transcripts with potential consequences to the genomic stability and post-transcriptional or epigenetic regulation of DFR...

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Of these, approximately 25% will have liver metastasis. We performed 394 microwave ablations (MWA) and analyzed outcomes for survival and ablation failure. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of patients who underwent a surgical microwave ablation at a single center high-volume institution from October 2006 through September 2022 using a prospectively maintained database...

The history of human prion diseases began with the original description, by Hans Gerhard Creutzfeldt and by Alfons Maria Jakob, of patients with a severe brain disease that included speech abnormalities, confusion, and myoclonus, in a disease that was then named Creutzfeldt Jakob disease (CJD). Later, in Papua New Guinea, a disease characterized by trembling was identified, and given the name "Kuru". Neuropathological examination of the brains from CJD and Kuru patients, and of brains of sheep with scrapie disease revealed significant similarities and suggested a possible common mode of infection that, at the time, was thought to derive from an unknown virus that caused slow infections...

We sought to investigate differential metabolism in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) who develop pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) versus those who do not, as a method of identifying potential disease biomarkers. In a nested case-control design, serum metabolites were assayed in SSc subjects who developed right heart catheterization-confirmed PAH (n=22) while under surveillance in a longitudinal cohort from Johns Hopkins, then compared to metabolites assayed in matched SSc patients who did not develop PAH (n=22)...

Three new nitrides La3MN5 (M = Cr, Mn, and Mo) have been synthesized using a high pressure azide route. These are the first examples of ternary Cs3CoCl5-type nitrides, and show that this (MN4)NLa3 antiperovskite structure type may be used to stabilise high oxidation-state transition metals in tetrahedral molecular [MN4]n- nitridometallate anions. Magnetic measurements confirm that Cr and Mo are in the M6+ state, but the M = Mn phase has an anomalously small paramagnetic moment and large cell volume. Neutron powder diffraction data are fitted using an anion-excess La3MnN5...

GP training in the UK has a long history of success, however that is measured. That success is in part due to the formality and credentialling that underlies preparation to take on that role of a GP teacher, which is somewhat under current threat due to workforce pressures. We identify three important factors associated with the GP trainer function [leadership, professional identity and clinical care improvement] that are not often analysed but are at some risk if preparation for the GP trainer role is reduced or devalued...

BACKGROUND: Narrative written feedback given to students by faculty often fails to identify areas for improvement and recommended actions to lead to this improvement. When these elements are missing, it is challenging for students to improve and for medical schools to use narrative feedback in promotion decisions, to guide coaching plans and to pass on meaningful information to residency programs. Large-group faculty development has improved narrative written feedback, but less is known about individualised faculty development to supplement large-group sessions...

Limb ischaemia is a clinically relevant complication of venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) with femoral artery cannulation. No selective distal perfusion or other advanced techniques were used in the past to maintain adequate distal limb perfusion. A more recent trend is the shift from the reactive or emergency management to the pro-active or prophylactic placement of a distal perfusion cannula to avoid or reduce limb ischaemia-related complications. Multiple alternative cannulation techniques to the distal perfusion cannula have been developed to maintain distal limb perfusion, including end-to-side grafting, external or endovascular femoro-femoral bypass, retrograde limb perfusion (e...

The intratarsal keratinous cyst (IKC) is a recently described entity, often clinically misdiagnosed as a chalazion. We report a case of a 61-year-old male patient with a chief complaint of a small lesion on the upper eyelid that evolved over six months. On physical examination, an asymptomatic, firm nodule was identified on the left upper eyelid. The patient reported no history of trauma. A provisional diagnosis of chalazion was established, and an excisional biopsy was performed. Histopathologically, the lesion was lined with a stratified squamous epithelium, with a corrugated epithelial surface showing abrupt keratinization without keratohyalin granules, and compact keratinous-appearing material in the cystic lumen...

Total hip arthroplasty is indubitably one of the most performed operations worldwide. On the other hand, especially in the western world, the average age that women get pregnant has raised confoundedly. Consequently, a steadily increasing number of women become pregnant after they had hip arthroplasty surgery, with copious potential implications. The amount of knowledge on this particular field is considered inadequate in the existing literature. This paper aims to augment clinicians understanding surrounding this topic...

Relative age effects (RAEs) within sports refer to the overrepresentation of athletes born earlier in the selection year and the underrepresentation of those born later in the selection year. Research examining RAEs in women's and girls' rugby union remains limited in comparison to the male literature, whilst the impacts of RAEs on the youth-senior transition are yet to be explored in a female sport context. As such, the purpose of this study was to examine RAEs during entry into the women's and girls' premiership and international rugby union pathways in England, as well as to compare them to their respective senior cohort ( n = 1367): (a) U18 England Rugby Centre of Excellence Player ( n = 325) vs...

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare neuromuscular disorder diagnosed in childhood. Limited newborn screening in the US often delays diagnosis. With multiple FDA-approved therapies, early diagnosis is crucial for timely treatment but may entail other benefits and harms. Using a community-based survey, we explored how parents of siblings with DMD perceived early diagnosis of one child due to a prior child's diagnosis. We assessed parents' viewpoints across domains including diagnostic journey, treatment initiatives, service access, preparedness, parenting, emotional impact, and caregiving experience...

Iron-sulfur clusters play essential roles in biological systems, and thus synthetic [Fe4 S4 ] clusters have been an area of active research. Recent studies have demonstrated that soluble [Fe4 S4 ] clusters can serve as net H atom transfer mediators, improving the activity and selectivity of a homogeneous Mn CO2 reduction catalyst. Here, we demonstrate that incorporating these [Fe4 S4 ] clusters into a coordination polymer enables heterogeneous H atom transfer from an electrode surface to a Mn complex dissolved in solution...
