The goal of this study was to collect and analyse information on the prevalence of childhood migraine and disability due to migraine in primary school children of 4th to 8th grades (ages ranging from 9 to 17 years) in the Aydin urban area. A cross-sectional school-based study was conducted between March and June 2004. There were 76 333 children of 4th to 8th grades in primary schools in Aydin. Nearly 10% of this population (7721 out of 76 333) was evaluated by a multistage clustered sampling procedure. The aim of the present study was to develop a screening tool to aid non-headache specialists, like general practitioners, in deciding whether migraine prophylaxis in the individual migraine patient is useful or not. The first step was the development of a questionnaire, consisting of 10 items, which was filled in by 132 migraineurs who called on neurologists or headache experts. Independently, the physicians filled in another questionnaire to answer the question of whether they decided to prescribe migraine prophylaxis and if they had, to give their reasons for doing so...

We present validation of a simple questionnaire designed to screen the general population for migraine. It comprises four questions: (1) "Have you ever had migraine?" (2) "Have you ever had severe headache accompanied by nausea?" (3) "Have you ever had severe headache accompanied by hypersensitivity to sound and light?" (4) "Have you ever had visual disturbances lasting 5-60 min followed by headache?" A telephone interview carried out by a physician was used as an index of validity.
