BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation is postulated to play an important role in Trichotillomania (TTM). Whilst a growing number of studies have examined the relationship between emotion regulation difficulties and TTM symptoms, there have been no attempts to evaluate the overall strength of this association or the quality of the evidence base. METHOD: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesise findings from studies that have examined the relationship between emotion regulation difficulties and TTM symptoms, to inform future TTM treatment targets...

Pilonidal sinus is an acquired chronic inflammatory condition associated with the penetration of hair fragments into the skin. In the pathogenesis of most of these cases, a traumatic event initiates the process allowing the introduction of the hairs into the skin. We report an unusual case of acquired pilonidal sinus as a consequence of the unconscious habit of chewing on the hairs in a 12-year-old girl. Although most commonly located in the gluteal cleft, it has been reported in several areas of the body (including face), but to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in the oral cavity...

BACKGROUND: Trichobezoar is a rare clinical condition in children, which is caused by the accumulation of swallowed hair mass in the digestive tract. This condition is most common in young women with psychiatric histories who suffer from trichotillomania (TTM), where they have an irresistible urge to pull out their hair. Diagnosis and treatment of this pathology, which is already extremely rare, and its variable clinical presentations are challenging. The aim of this study was to increase awareness of trichobezoar in the differential diagnosis of signs of intestinal obstruction in children and to evaluate the diagnosis and management of this rare pathology...

BACKGROUND: Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) are highly prevalent conditions at the border of psychiatry and dermatology. Using a newly developed scale, the Generic BFRB scale (GBS-36), we aimed to compare 4 prominent BFRBs in terms of phenomenology, age at onset, and other illness-related aspects. METHODS: A sample of 391 individuals with different forms of BFRBs completed the GBS-36, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (depression), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF global item (quality of life)...

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania is a common psychiatric disorder classified as an obsessive-compulsive and related condition in DSM-5. Despite being first described in the 1800s, little is known about its phenomenology and clinical presentation. Most information about trichotillomania is based on small samples. METHODS: Clinical and demographic data were collected from 858 individuals with trichotillomania who participated in research studies that used in-person assessments with validated instruments...

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania is a common psychiatric disorder, but little is known about whether or how it differs in people with minority sexual identities. We sought to understand whether lesbian, gay, bisexual, and other individuals differ from heterosexual individuals in terms of hair pulling and associated characteristics. METHODS: A total of 207 participants age 18 to 64 with trichotillomania undertook clinical evaluations. Those who identified as sexual minorities were compared to those who identified as heterosexuals on clinical measures, comorbidities, impulsivity, and stress responses...

Phyto-trichobezoar is a rare disorder characterized by the formation of mass in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) by the ingested inedible material, mostly hair and thread. The ingestion of hair is a rare psychiatric disorder called trichotillomania, which is more common in girls. An 11-year-old girl presented with clinical features of GIT obstruction, which were diagnosed to be Rapunzel syndrome by computed tomography. The phyto-trichobezoar was removed en masse by the anterior gastrotomy, which extended beyond the duodenum...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The Rapunzel syndrome embodies an uncommon variation of trichobezoar, predominantly observed among individuals with a history of psychiatric conditions, trichotillomania, and trichophagia. This combination of factors predisposes to the eventual formation of gastric bezoars. Trichobezoars, infrequent gastric masses composed of hair, can lead to complications if left untreated. CASE REPORT: A 19-year-old female hairdresser with a history of trichophagia sought medical attention due to abdominal pain and episodes of vomiting...

Trichotillomania, or hair-pulling disorder, is one of a family of disorders called body-focused repetitive behaviours (BFRBs), which also include disordered skin-picking (dermotillomania) and nail-biting (onychophagia). The disorders affect 1%-2% of the population, cause high levels of distress and have high levels of comorbidity with other psychiatric diagnoses. The key facts and figures are briefly reviewed and some important points are further explored: (1) BFRBs are associated with psychological distress, but are distinct from other diagnoses, (2) The pathological behaviours mirror excessive self-grooming behaviours in other species, and may relate to immune-system mediated feedback loops, and (3) The resulting behaviours are stigmatised and cause intense shame and isolation for those who suffer, which might in itself maintain the feedback loop...

There is a growing interest in using wearable technology for the treatment of body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), such as Trichotillomania. Yet, to our knowledge, few studies address the applicability and use of wearable technology as a therapeutic element in more naturalistic situations. Here we would like to introduce its potential use combined with a Habit-Reversal Training in a single-case experimental design. In practice, individuals with BFRBs frequently show complex constellations of psychiatric disorders...

Trichobezoars are hairballs in the gastrointestinal tract that usually develop due to the consumption of hair after pulling it. However, some rare case reports suggest that trichobezoar can also occur in the respiratory system. In this context, we present an unusual case of a 25-year-old woman who experienced dyspnea, productive cough, and leukocytosis. The patient was found to have a trichobezoar in her respiratory tract, accompanied by the presence of hair in her digestive tract.

Trichobezoars are difficult to remove endoscopically and often require surgery. We performed trans-umbilical intragastric surgery using two Alexis wound retractors with successful results in a pediatric patient with a trichobezoar. This method is a safe and cosmetically favorable option for the removal of large trichobezoars and does not require special techniques or instruments. It also contributes to the reduction of postoperative complications such as wound infection and intra-abdominal abscess.

Trichobezoar is a rare and potentially dangerous surgical condition in which patients swallow their own hair, often as a result of trichotillomania or trichophagia. This case report focuses on a 12-year female who experienced abdominal pain, anaemia, and gastric perforation due to her mental health conditions. Further examination revealed the presence of hairs, fibers, and bile in her stomach wall - indicative of trichobezoar - which had to be surgically removed. It is important for paediatric surgeons to remain aware and informed about this condition so that prompt treatment can be provided when necessary...

Rapunzel syndrome with gastric perforation is an extremely rare presentation of trichobezoars of the stomach. Trichobezoars may vary greatly in presentation ranging from benign symptoms like vague abdominal pain and anorexia to grave complications like perforation peritonitis. A sincere evaluation of any underlying psychiatric illnesses, usually trichotillomania and trichophagia, holds the key to preventing recurrences in patients of trichobezoar. A 15-year-old adolescent female presented with signs and symptoms of enteric perforation with a history of trichotillomania and trichophagia...

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Identifying any potential comorbidity such as bulimia nervosa (BN) and ADHD in trichotillomania patients is essential for a thorough treatment plan. Combining a multidisciplinary approach was found to be feasible and effective in the treatment. ABSTRACT: Trichotillomania is frequently considered an isolated disorder; nevertheless, emerging evidence suggests that other psychiatric conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are often found to coexist...

Trichoscopy is currently regarded as an essential part of the hair loss consultation. It allows visualization of morphologic structures that are not obvious to the naked eye, including peri- and interfollicular skin surface abnormalities and changes to hair shaft thickness and shape. In this paper, we aim to discuss current knowledge on trichoscopy of the most common forms of scarring and nonscarring alopecias.
