OBJECTIVE: Imaging the hip joint with optimized MRI protocol parameters provides the radiologist with the ability to reliably diagnose complex hip abnormalities. The institution of appropriate metal artifact reduction techniques and dedicated sequences can enhance visualization of the periprosthetic bone and soft tissues and allow improved detection of the more frequently encountered total hip arthroplasty-related conditions, such as mechanical loosening, polyethylene wear, and adverse local tissue reactions...

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a rare adverse event of antiresorptive drugs such as bisphosphonates (BP) and denosumab (DMAb). The diagnosis of ONJ is considered in cases where exposed bone in the maxillofacial region does not heal within 8 weeks in a patient previously treated with an antiresorptive agent. In patients with osteoporosis, ONJ is reported as a very rare adverse event while in oncologic patients with bone metastases or malignant hypercalcemia the incidence is significantly higher (up to the 1-10% of the patients)...

Elevated adipogenesis of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) is closely associated with non-traumatic osteonecrosis of femoral head (ONFH). Our previous studies have shown that Huogu (HG) formula was effective both in clinic experience and experimental ONFH. How HG impacts the differentiation of BMSCs and what is the underlying molecular mechanism remain largely unknown. Our results showed that ethyl acetate extract of HG (HGE) significantly decreased the adipocyte differentiation as determined by oil red staining, while slightly increased the ALP activity...

BACKGROUND: Since Sugioka transtrochanteric anterior rotational osteotomy (ARO) for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) changes the morphology of the proximal femur, total hip arthroplasty (THA) after previous ARO is considered a technically demanding procedure. The purpose of this study was to compare the clinicoradiologic outcomes of THA after ARO with those of THA without any antecedent surgery for ONFH. METHODS: Twenty-four hips in 20 patients who underwent cementless THA after ARO (postosteotomy group) were retrospectively reviewed and compared with patients who underwent cementless THA without any antecedent surgery for ONFH during the same period (primary group)...

Osteonecrosis (ON) is usually considered treatment related in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). We report two patients with presentation of ON at the time of ALL diagnosis. Both were females and diagnosed with ALL at age 8 and 14 years. In the latter, some symptoms and radiologically verified ON in both knees were still present after the end of ALL therapy. No pediatric patients have previously been reported with ON presenting before initiation of ALL therapy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The exploration for the etiology of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) has got some promising findings, but the morbidity of ONFH is still not under control. The C3435T polymorphism of ATP-binding cassette subfamily B member 1 (ABCB1) gene has been reported to possess significant influence on ONFH onset, but relevant outcomes remain conflicting rather than conclusive. Therefore, a meta-analysis was useful to pool these results together for a more reliable conclusion...

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the talar body represents a complex clinical challenge with treatment options currently limited to core decompression, vascularized and nonvascularized bone-grafting, total talar replacement, and hindfoot arthrodesis. Vascularized pedicle bone-grafting from the cuboid to the talus is a potential alternative to contemporary operative options for replacement of necrotic talar tissue with viable bone. We aimed to analyze functional and radiographic outcomes of vascularized pedicle bone-grafting from the cuboid for the treatment of talar osteonecrosis in a consecutive series of patients spanning a 12-year period...

Autogenous bone graft (autograft) remains the gold standard in the treatment of many orthopedic problems. However, graft harvest can lead to perioperative morbidity and increased cost. We tested the hypothesis that an osteoconductive matrix, beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), would be a safe and effective alternative to autograft alone. Beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) is considered as one of the most promising biomaterials for bone reconstruction. This study analyzes the outcomes of patients who received β-TCP as bone substitutes in orthopedic surgery...

BACKGROUND: Femoral head collapse is a key reference point for determining a treatment regimen of femoral head osteonecrosis. However, there are no effective preventive measures and the efficacy of hip-preserving surgery is unsatisfactory due to the unclear mechanism of collapse. This study aimed to identify and validate miRNAs differentially expressed in collapse and non-collapse areas of the osteonecrotic femoral head, and to predict the target genes and pathways of these miRNAs. RESULTS: Nine samples passed the quality control test...
