: Patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis experience an increased incidence of cardiovascular (CV) events. In addition to visualizing atherosclerotic plaques, ultrasound examinations (USs) of the carotid arteries permit the measurement of subclinical markers of atherosclerosis, such as intima-media thickness (cIMT) and carotid segmental distensibility (cDC). The aims of the study were to identify the determinants of atherosclerosis acceleration (plaques, cIMT and cDC) in a sample of patients suffering from chronic arthritis and to compare these patients with a control group of people with ≤1 traditional risk factor (TRF) for CV disease...

The utility of the ear crease sign, anterior tragal crease (ATC), as a marker of atherosclerosis is yet to be established. The intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery (IMT-CCA) has been used as a noninvasive surrogate marker for atherosclerosis. History of traditional risk factors for atherosclerosis was obtained from 147 volunteers; ear examination was also performed and venous blood was drawn for laboratory analysis. The volunteers then underwent an ultrasonography measurement of the IMT-CCA. In univariate analysis, presence of ATC, age, underlying hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, cigarette smoking, low-density lipoprotein, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein were significantly associated with the IMT-CCA...

AIM: To test if circulating levels of markers of inflammation, endothelial function, and chronic infections, as well as association between these markers and carotid intima media thickness (CIMT), depend on the stage of atherosclerosis expressed as a history of a major vascular event. METHODS: The associations were analyzed separately in 75 healthy controls, 79 patients 3-6 months after the first-ever non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke (IS), and 37 patients 3-6 months after the first-ever myocardial infarction (MI)...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Although comprehensive risk factor modification is recommended, a uniform management strategy does not necessarily prevent secondary events in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Therefore, identification of high-risk patients who may benefit from more intensive interventions may improve prognosis. Carotid ultrasound can reliably identify systemic atherosclerosis, and carotid plaque and intima-media thickness (IMT) are known independent risk factors for CAD...

BACKGROUND: There is presently no data to describe normal distribution of carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), an established measure of subclinical atherosclerosis, in Indian subjects. METHODS: In this multi-centric study, 1229 subjects with age ≥30 years and no previous cardiovascular disease (CVD) underwent CVD risk factor assessment and CIMT measurement. Mean far wall common carotid artery IMT was measured on both sides and averaged. RESULTS: Mean age of the subjects was 48...

BACKGROUND: In this study, we examined the relative usefulness of serum copeptin levels as a surrogate marker of vasopressin (AVP) in adult polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) by correlating it with baseline and longitudinal changes in markers of both renal function and common CVD manifestations (hypertensive vascular disease, atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction) that accompany the progression of this disease. METHODS: We studied a cohort of young and otherwise healthy ADPKD patients (n = 235) and measured cardiovascular function using flow-mediation dilatation (FMD), carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) and pulse wave velocity (PWV), as well as serum copeptin (commercial ELISA, a stable marker of AVP activity)...

OBJECTIVES: Preeclampsia, a pregnancy-specific hypertensive disorder, has been associated with cardiovascular risk factors and vascular changes, such as acute atherosis in placental blood vessels, which are similar to early-stage atherosclerosis. The objective of this study was to determine whether women with preeclampsia have increased atherosclerotic burden, as determined by carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), when compared to women without preeclampsia. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies that reported CIMT, a non-invasive, ultrasound-based measure of subclinical atherosclerosis, in women who did vs...

BACKGROUND: Obesity is an independent cardiovascular risk factor and a catalyst of other cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and metabolic syndrome. METHODS: We analyzed cardiovascular risk in obese patients before and after sleeve gastrectomy (SG). To this end, we studied changes in body mass index (BMI), blood chemistry parameters that characterize the risk of atherosclerosis and instrumental parameters (objective markers of this risk), namely intima-media thickness (IMT) and flow-mediated dilation (FMD), the latter reflecting endothelial function...

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies demonstrate an inverse association between serum magnesium and incidence of cardiovascular disease. Diuretics commonly cause hypomagneseamia. METHOD: We evaluated effects of magnesium supplementation on blood pressure (BP) and vascular function in thiazide-treated hypertensive women in a randomized, double-blind, clinical trial. Hypertensive women (40-65 years) on hydrochlorothiazide and mean 24-h BP at least 130/80 mmHg were divided into placebo and supplementation (magnesium chelate 600 mg/day) groups...

OBJECTIVE: Though both carotid bulb and aortic arch are known to play important roles in regulation of blood pressure through modulation in baroreflex function, few studies have investigated the association of carotid bulb atherosclerosis and large arterial stiffness and orthostatic blood pressure change. DESIGN AND METHOD: Patients with metabolic disorder such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus underwent measurement of segment-specific carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) (as an index of atherosclerosis of carotid bulb), cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) (as an index for large arterial stiffness), heart rate variability (HRV) (as an index of baroreflex function) and sit-to-stand orthostatic blood pressure change (as a simple method for detecting orthostatic hypotension)...

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has shown that hypovitaminosis D may increase the risk of hypertension, vascular disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Endothelial dysfunction (ED) is one of the key components of MetS which is associated with an imbalance between vasoactive substances such as nitric oxide (NO) and endothelins (ET). In this study, we assessed the association of 25(OH) D3 level with endothelial dysfunction and subclinical atherosclerosis in MetS patients...

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease, and its comorbidities have attracted serious interest in recent years. The evidence that psoriasis is associated with systemic inflammation and significantly higher incidence of cardiovascular risk factors has already been described. The results of published studies are highly variable, the conclusions are ambiguous, and further epidemiological studies are needed for validation of published data. Therefore, we initiated a project aimed at identifying the association with cardiovascular risk factors, including early stages of atherosclerosis, that represent important comorbidities in patients with psoriasis...

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated strongly with an increased risk of micro- and macro-vascular complications, leading to impaired quality of life and shortened life expectancy. In addition to appropriate glycemic control, multi-factorial intervention for a wide range of risk factors, such as hypertension and dyslipidemia, is crucial for management of diabetes. A recent cardiovascular outcome trial in diabetes patients with higher cardiovascular risk demonstrated that a SGLT2 inhibitor markedly reduced mortality, but not macro-vascular events...

BACKGROUND: Primary Sjögren syndrome is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease. The delay in diagnosis allows the establishment of a chronic inflammatory state, which makes primary Sjögren syndrome an interesting model for the study of atherosclerosis. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate subclinical atherosclerosis in 49 patients with Sjögren syndrome using noninvasive methods. METHODS: We assessed traditional risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, smoking, and family history of atherosclerosis...

OBJECTIVE: Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a non-atherosclerotic non-inflammatory arterial disease, which occurs mostly in middle-aged women and affects medium-sized arteries. We previously showed abnormalities within common carotid artery (CCA) wall, with the presence of triple signal (TS) at ultrasound suggesting the presence of supplementary layers. We aimed at coupling TS presence with microconstituents of the vessel wall, derived from fitting of the pressure-diameter curve. DESIGN AND METHOD: We included 50 non-smoking patients with multifocal FMD, 50 essential hypertensive (EH) patients and 50 healthy subjects (HS) matched for age, sex, ethnicity and BP (EH and FD)...
